Wissahickon fell to Lower Dauphin 3-0 in a PIAA Class AAA quarterfinal field hockey game on Saturday.
Wissahickon, the lone SOL field hockey team still standing, saw its season end on Saturday when the Trojans fell to Lower Dauphin, the fourth-seeded team out of District 3.
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead into halftime and never looked back.
“They were a good, solid team,” coach Lucy Gil said. “We got outplayed. I know they were able to scout us since they played the day before us, so they knew we had really good ball handlers, and they were coming in swarms.
“Every time Jackie (Hibbs) touched the ball, there were three girls on her. Every time Angela (Virtu) touched the ball, there were three girls on her. It was really hard to play our game.”
Any chance the Trojans might have had to get back in the game went out the window early in the second half after Wissahickon's sweeper went down with an injury.
“She was bleeding profusely, and as I'm walking off the field, the ref blows the whistle and play resumed,” Gil said. “They scored as soon as she blows the whistle, and I never got a chance to put in a sub.”
It was a play, according to Gil, that turned the tide completely.
“We were holding them and holding our own,” the Trojans' coach said. “We were down 1-0, and if we get a fast break, we can tie it up. After that happened, we got deflated and they got inflated. After they scored the second goal, they played 600 times better than they had in the first half.
“I don't want to be a sore loser. They were definitely the better team. They didn't have any holes. They are a really solid team.”
The Trojans' received a standout effort from sophomore goalie Emoni Fisher, who was credited with 13 saves.
“She played well,” Gil said. “Everybody played well, but against that team we had to play amazing, and we just couldn't pull it off.
“We needed to play the game of our lives to beat them, and we just did not have it today.”
The Trojans closed out the season with an SOL American Conference title and an 18-6 record overall (13-1 SOL).
“We had a good year considering it's a young team,” Gil said. “Jackie (Hibbs) and Emily (Gallagher) will be difficult to replace, but I have young players, and if we work really hard, we can come up with another great team.”
