MEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) tied his career high with 30 points and made two free throws with 13 seconds remaining to lift East Stroudsburg to an 80-79 win over Alderson-Broaddus in the Warriors’ season opener on Saturday night at Shepherd University. Grant scored 18 points in the second half, including 11 in a 13-3 run early in the period that gave ESU a 60-47 lead. Grant, the top scorer in last year’s PSAC championship team with 13.9 points per game, was 11-for-17 from the field, 4-for-5 from the three-point line and 4-for-4 from the foul line for his second career 30-plus point game. He also had four steals.

Junior guard AJ Picard (Souderton) has been selected to serve as co-captain for the 2012-13 Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team. An honorable mention All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference selection last year, Picard was the Lightning’s third leading scorer last year with a 13.7 average and led the team by making 80.1 percent of his free throw attempts. He scored in double figures 22 times last year, including a season-high 23 points at Lincoln (Pa.) on Nov. 22 and at Shippensburg on Nov. 29. “I saw tremendous growth by AJ from his freshman year to his sophomore year as both a player and a leader,” coach Chuck Hammond said. “He has worked extremely hard during the offseason and has the full respect of the entire team and coaching staff.”

Picard had 13 points and a team high five assists in Goldey-Beacom’s 94-77 non-conference loss to Southern Connecticut on Saturday.

CJ Aiken (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed 13 points and seven rebounds in St. Joseph’s 71-50 win over Wheeling Jesuit in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic exhibition game on Thursday.

Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) scored a team-high 16 points in Bloomsburg’s 70-58 loss to Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday.

Texas sophomore forward Jaylen Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh), one of the Big 12’s top rebounders, was sidelined with an ankle injury for the Longhorns’ season opener against Fresno State on Friday night. Texas escaped with a 55-53 win.

Senior guard Jim Connolly (Souderton) scored 11 points in Philadelphia University’s 79-54 loss to Penn State in an exhibition game at Bryce Jordan Center last Saturday. In the Rams’ 77-69 exhibition loss to James Madison, Connolly hit 13-of-17 attempts from the free throw line and led all players with 19 points. Guard Nick Christian (Bensalem) didn’t score but pulled down 16 of 36 Philadelphia rebounds.

Junior forward Will Barrett (Central Bucks South) made an immediate impact on his return to the Princeton men’s basketball team, drilling a late three-pointer to seal a 57-53 win in the team’s season-opening contest at Buffalo on Saturday. Barrett led Princeton with 20 points and a game-high nine rebounds. He did not play after Nov. 30 of last year due to a foot injury, although he did play a big role in Princeton’s four-game trip to Spain two months ago. Barrett’s previous career best in scoring was 13 points on Jan. 24, 2010, against Goucher. His nine rebounds also were a career high, topping the eight he had in his last game against Lafayette on Nov. 30, 2011.

Freshman Ryan Arcidiacono (Neshaminy) scored 25 points, and his assist set up a pivotal three-pointer in the closing minutes to help lift Villanova to an 80-68 win over Marshall in the second game of the 2K Sports Classic on Sunday. The 6-3 guard gave the Wildcats their first basket of the afternoon on a three-point field goal and then added two more in the game’s first eight minutes. He tossed in a pair of assists to help VU build a 17-12 advantage with 11:57 remaining in the half. He scored 20 of his game-high 25 points in the first half, connecting on 5-of-8 shots from the field including 4-of-7 from three-point range. He also added four assists. Arcidiacono ended the game connecting on 6-of-11 from the field, including 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. In Friday’s 78-58 win over the University of District Columbia, Arcidiacono paced the Wildcats with 11 points, four assists and three rebounds and 28 minutes.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Millersville senior Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) was selected to the All-PSAC East Preseason All-Conference Team. Newman was the only player on the Millersville squad to start all 27 games last season. She ranked fourth in the conference in minutes played with an average of 35.2 minutes per game. Newman was second on the team in points with 12.3 per game. She became just the 18th player in program history to break 1,000 points in just 80 games and now has 1,082 career points to rank her 14th at Millersville all-time. Newman led the team in steals (66) and assists (131) for the second straight season. She also blocked 42 shots last season, more than she combined in her first two seasons, to rank fifth in the conference. Newman ranks third in school history with 292 steals and ninth in assists with 368. Millersville is ranked third in the PSAC Eastern Division Preseason Poll, behind Bloomsburg and West Chester.

Sophomore forward Emily Leer (Abington) scored seven points and also had three steals in Villanova’s 71-47 win over South Dakota on Saturday in the opening round of the Best Buy Classic on Saturday.

Senior guard Ashley Rosario (Harry S Truman) scored eight points in Goldey-Beacom’s 58-51 win over St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday. In last Monday’s 84-46 exhibition loss to the University of Maryland, Rosario contributed 10 points and a team high seven rebounds.

Sam Simononis (Pennridge) scored six points in Vermont’s 72-62 exhibition loss to Franklin Pierce last Saturday.

Junior forward Danielle Derr (Upper Dublin) scored nine points and also had three rebounds and a blocked shot in Bloomsburg’s 84-54 win over Chestnut Hill College in a non-conference game on Friday.

Freshman Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) was impressive in her first collegiate start, contributing 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor while also pulling down a team high seven rebounds in Shippensburg’s 85-50 win over Washington Adventist on Sunday.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Senior Sam Stortz (Upper Dublin) was the top finisher for Ursinus College at the 2012 NCAA Mideast Regional on Saturday, posting a time of 29:09.2. Freshman David Slade (Abington) finished with a time of 31:47.8. Ursinus finished 42nd as a team.

Penn State Abington freshman Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) placed 73rd in the NCAA Mideast Regional to close out the 2012 season on Saturday, posting a time of 27:10.2 in his first NCAA event. Sophomore Nicholas Volpe (William Tennent) was the Nittany Lions’ fourth finisher, placing 239th with a time of 29:48.8. The team placed 32nd. It is the first time in program history that the Nittany Lions competed in a NCAA Division III postseason championship.

Junior Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) was Penn State’s number three runner at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships on Friday, finishing just off All-Region status in 28th overall with a time of 31:09. Sophomore Chris Campbell (Council Rock North) was the Nittany Lions’ seventh runner, finishing 94th overall with a time of 32.48. Penn State placed fifth overall in the team standings.

Widener’s Ryan Gallagher (Neshaminy) finished 154th with a time of 28:24.20 at the NCAA Division II Mideast Regional Championships. The men’s team finished 17th overall in the 8K.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Senior Gina Brienza (Central Bucks East) is part of the Ursinus College cross country team that competed at the NCAA Mideast Regional hosted by Dickinson College.

Temple junior Kelly Broadbent (Upper Dublin) posted a time of 24:38 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at Penn State. The Owls finished in 23rd place.

FIELD HOCKEY
Drexel senior Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) was named CLEAR Athlete of the Week for the week ending Nov. 11. The senior captain had the game-winner assist in the 73rd minute of play to help Drexel defeat second-seeded Northeastern 2-1 in overtime for the CAA championship title. On the weekend, she posted a goal and two assists. Fleischut was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Performer and joined the team in its first ever automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. Fleischut led the Dragons with 11 goals and eight assists for 30 total points. Drexel fell to No. 2 Princeton 5-0 in the opening round on Saturday.

Maria Karidas (Council Rock South) contributed a goal and an assist in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 8-2 loss to No. 7 Christopher Newport in an opening round game of the 2012 NCAA Tournament on Wednesday. In last Sunday’s 5-1 win over Cabrini in the 2012 CSAC Championship game, Karidas scored a goal.

Christina Maida (Central Bucks East) was credited with four saves in goal in No. 2 Princeton’s 5-2 win over No. 7 Virginia in Sunday’s NCAA quarterfinal action. The Tigers will advance to the Final Four for the sixth time in program history. In Saturday’s 5-0 win over No. 15 Drexel, Maida had a pair of saves and helped Princeton earn its ninth shutout of the year.

Senior Marlaine Schneider (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in Rider’s 2-1 overtime loss to No. 16 University of Minnesota in Tuesday’s NCAA Play-in game. Schneider graduates with 107 points (35 goals, 37 assists), eighth best all-time at Rider.

FOOTBALL
Senior running back Teddy Conrad (Central Bucks West) rushed for 80 yards and two touchdowns in Ursinus College’s 48-7 win over Dickinson in its season finale on Saturday. Freshman kicker Eric Boyer (Upper Dublin) booted a 21-yard field goal at the end of an 11-play, 63-yard drive with 6:48 left in the opening half for a 24-0 lead. Sophomore wide receiver Josh Williams (Central Bucks South) contributed three receptions for 41 yards, and senior Derek Giannetti (Upper Dublin) closed out his career with one reception for five yards and three punts for 103 yards.

Boyer was named Centennial Conference Co-Special Teams Player of the Week. He kicked field goals of 32 and 21 yards and was a perfect 5-for-5 on PAT kicks in Ursinus College’s 48-7 win over Dickinson.

Quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington) was 38-of-50, throwing for 369 yards and three touchdowns in Kutztown’s 47-21 win over Edinboro on Saturday. With his three TDs, Morton now has 117 in his career – good for fifth in the Division II record books. Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) was on the receiving end of a 15-yard touchdown pass. Jason Ulmer (Neshaminy) intercepted a pass that set up a field goal and a 47-21 Kutztown lead.

Morton has been chosen as one of 24 candidates for the 2012 Harlon Hill Trophy as the NCAA Division II College Football Player of the Year. He is one of nine quarterbacks on the ballot and is also one of 14 seniors up for the award. He is one of just two repeat candidates. Morton is already in the top 10 in Division II history with 114 career touchdown passes. Morton also sits inside the top 20 on the DII career leaderboard for passing yards and total yards. His 11,019 passing yards are 16th all-time while the Abington alum is 17th in total yardage with 11,696 yards. All three of those marks are school records as are his totals for completions and attempts. He rates second in the PSAC record book in touchdown passes and is third all-time in the conference in both passing yards and total offense. With both 10,000-plus passing yards and 100-plus touchdown passes, he is one of just 19 players in Division II history and just 59 in NCAA history to reach both milestones in his career.

Temple senior placekicker Brandon McManus (North Penn) was named the National Honorable Mention Specialist and Punter of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards on Sunday. In Saturday’s 34-10 loss to Cincinnati, McManus became Temple’s career leader in field goal attempts (79) with his 20-yard field goal in the first quarter. He is Temple’s career leader in field goals made with 58. McManus also punted seven times for 342 yards (48.9 average), including a 60-yard punt in the second quarter. He had three kickoffs for 195 yards (65.0 average).

Senior wide receiver Ryan Dickerson (Souderton) hauled in a touchdown pass in Bloomsburg's 49-41 win over Slippery Rock on Saturday, extending his streak to seven consecutive games with a touchdown. Dickerson was four yards short of tying a career high as he had 113 yards on six catches.

Brandon Mercer (North Penn) had three returns for 77 yards (25.7 average) with a long of 28 in East Stroudsburg’s 52-45 loss to Mercyhurst on Saturday. He finished the season second in school history in kick return average (31.9) with 14 returns for 446 yards. Mercer had a 94-yard kick return for a TD against Cheyney, ESU’s first kick return TD since 2002. Teammate Andrew Coyle (Souderton) had 45 tackles, two interceptions and four pass breakups in nine starts this season.

Placekicker Shawn Leo (Souderton) tied his own school record with four field goals in West Chester’s 33-12 win over host Clarion on Saturday. Leo’s 37 field goals is a school record. His 45 career attempts is second all-time, and his 82.2 career percentage is a school record. His 119 extra points is third all-time at West Chester, and his 123 career extra points is fifth all-time.

MEN’S SOCCER
Gwynedd-Mercy sophomore Ryan Roedel (Neshaminy) was named to the Colonial States Athletic Conference second team. It was his first all-conference nod. Roedel appeared in all 20 games on defense while adding three goals and an assist.

Senior Julian Ward (Abington) scored a goal in Penn State Abington’s 2-1 loss to Morrisville State College in the NEAC Championship game. In Friday’s 3-2 overtime loss to Alvernia, Ward scored a goal to knot the score 2-2.

Forward/midfielder Joe Farrell (Wissahickon) picked up Rookie of the Week honors after scoring a goal and helping La Salle to the two wins and an Atlantic 10 Tournament berth. He scored a goal to seal La Salle’s 3-0 win over Duquesne. He concluded the regular season with 14 points on five goals and four assists. His 14 points and five goals are both second on the squad, while his four assists tie him for the team lead.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Penn State Abington freshman forward Cindy Wade (Abington) was named to the North Eastern Athletic Conference all-conference second team.

La Salle keeper Gabrielle Pakhtigian (North Penn) was named CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District. She recorded two shutouts in three tournament games and had 10 on the season. She recorded eight saves, including two spectacular efforts on VCU breakaways in La Salle’s win in the championship game. As a nursing major, Pakhtigian boasts a 3.94 GPA and was honored as an A-10 All-Academic selection in addition to her first team all-conference recognition.

Pakhtigian kept La Salle within striking distance in Friday’s 4-1 loss to Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, breaking up several one-on-one opportunities and recording four pivotal saves.

MEN’S SWIMMING
Freshman Kevin Dunigan (North Penn) was part of the winning 200 medley relay that posted a time of 1:43.07 in Washington & Jefferson’s 150-109 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. In Washington & Jefferson’s 110-82 win over Frostburg State in its season opener, sophomore Jake Meyers (Council Rock North) was part of the winning 200 free relay team that posted a time of 1:34.77.

Sophomore TJ Guminski (Hatboro-Horsham) posted a time of 1:06.29 to win the 100-yard breaststroke in Lycoming’s 156-86 win over Elizabethtown on Saturday.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Ashley Kichline (Souderton)
was part of Millersville’s 400-yard medley relay that finished third with a time of 4:13.16 at Saturday’s tri-meet against Gannon and California (Pa.).

Alex Wheatley (Upper Dublin) was part of Bloomsburg’s 400-yard medley relay that finished second with a time of 4:10.37 in the Huskies’192.5-107.5 loss to Clarion on Saturday. She finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.83 and was fifth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:17.98.  Julie DeVincent (Upper Dublin) finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:59.00.  She was fifth in the 100 free with a time of 56.81 and also was part of the Huskies’ second place 400 free relay that posted a time of 3:47.99. Madeline Barlow (Pennsbury) finished third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.75.

Sophomore Chelsea Kozior (Council Rock South) was first in the 200 free with a time of 2:02.17 in Ursinus College’s 116-87 win over McDaniel on Saturday. Ursinus is 4-0. In Wednesday’s 111-92 win over Albright, Kozio won the 500 free with a time of 5:26.38 and took home second in the 200 free at 2:00.54. In last Saturday’s 116-80 win over Salisbury, Kozior finished first in the 50 free with a time of 26.36.

Junior Colleen Stiles (North Penn) won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.07 in Shippensburg’s 112-67 win over Fairmont State in Saturday’s dual meet. Freshman Carolyn Meier (Upper Dublin) was part of the 200-yard medley relay that finished first with a time of 1:54.29. They also won the 200 free relay, finishing in 1:41.11. Meier captured second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.32. Teammate Sara Small (Abington) was third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:03.28.

Rachel Engelhardt (Hatboro-Horsham) finished second in the 200 free in Elizabethtown’s 142.5-109.5 loss to Lycoming on Saturday.

Paige Whitmire (Souderton) was part of Penn State’s winning 200 medley relay team in the Nittany Lions’ 177-116 win over Villanova on Saturday. Whitmire also won the 50 free with a time of 23.28.

La Salle junior Shauna Hannings (North Penn) finished third in the three-meter diving event in last Saturday’s meet against Butler, Duquesne, St. Bonaventure and Xavier. La Salle defeated Butler (258-70), Duquesne (206-122) and Xavier (208-119) but fell to St. Bonaventure (182-151).

Jen Ikeda (North Penn) reset her program record in the 100 free, winning with a time of 1:02.53 in Lebanon Valley’s 131-60 win over Cabrini on Friday night. She also led off the 200 free relay that finished first with a time of 1:58.80, shaving 19-hundredths off the previous mark set last year. In Lebanon Valley’s 118-84 win over Arcadia, Ikeda won the 200 free (2:04.06) and 200 butterfly (2:30.51).  In Lebanon Valley’s 111-86 loss to Albright, Ikeda won the 200 free with a time of 2:15.66 and then took the 100 fly by nearly 15 seconds with a time of 1:05.72.

Taylor Mateja (Upper Merion) was part of Franklin & Marshall’s first place 200 freestyle relay that posted a time of 1:44.17 in the Diplomat’s 114-91 loss to Swarthmore on Saturday.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Junior middle blocker Brittany O’Hara (Pennridge) had six blocks and four kills while senior outside hitter JeanAnne Carey (Pennsbury) had 10 digs in Moravian’s 3-1 win over Swarthmore in the semifinals of the 2012 ECAC Division III South Championships on Saturday. Moravian fell to Bethany 3-0 in the championship match. In Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Penn State Abington, O’Hara had four kills and one dig while Carey had three kills and two digs. The win was the 28th of the season for the Greyhounds, breaking the single season win record of 27 set in 1992 and 1998.  For Penn State Abington, Kate Schalck (William Tennent) had two kills while sophomore Leah Brown (Wiliam Tennent) led the team with three assists.

Audrey Singer (Pennsbury) had four kills in Kutztown’s 3-0 win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday.

Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) had 21 assists in Cabrini’s 3-0 loss to top-seeded Bethany College in the ECAC South Region Tournament on Saturday. In Cabrini’s 3-0 win over Lebanon Valley College, Koenig dished out 39 assists.

Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) had six kills and one block in Franklin & Marshall’s 3-0 loss to Johns Hopkins in the Centennial Conference finals.

Holy Family sophomore Devyn Ingram (Upper Merion) finished the season with 139 kills (1.51 per set), 202 digs, 292 assists, 30 aces and 17 blocks.

WRESTLING
Matt Rappo (Council Rock South)
earned an 18-4 major decision at 141 in Bloomsburg’s 29-9 win over Campbell.

Ursinus sophomore Richard Jasinski (Pennridge) won the 157-pound bracket at the 2012 Fall Brawl on Saturday. After a first round bye, Jasinski defeated Jesse Capello-Colon of Hunter by a 16-3 major decision. Against Manny Markantone of Gettysburg, he won 5-0. He then defeated Michael Hooker of Navy Prep 1-0. In the championship, he defeated Marcus Miller of Liberty University 7-2. Ursinus finished first out of 15 teams with a total team score of 144 points. In last Saturday’s Messiah Invitational, Jasinski won his bracket at 157. After starting the day with a tech fall win over Aaron Banko of Heidelberg, he scored a 12-0 major decision over John Stockdale of Elizabethtown. In the quarterfinals, he major decisioned Isaac Bray of Wheaton 10-2, then repeated that 10-2 score in a win over Logan Yox of McDaniel. In the championship bout, he earned a 1-0 decision over top-seeded Mark Savenok of Wheaton. The Bears finish fifth with 65.5 points. Jasinski was the lone champion for Ursinus.

Penn State junior James Vollrath (Council Rock South) finished third at 157 at the Binghamton Open at Binghamton University this weekend, posting a 7-1 mark with a major, a tech fall and a pin. The event featured over 300 wrestlers.
