CALN – It took Coatesville two plays to score the first time it had the ball.

The Red Raiders scored on the third play of their second possession, took a punt back for a touchdown on their third, and then hit for a score on the first play of their fourth possession.

That’s four touchdowns, 28 points and just six plays from scrimmage.

And that was bad news for Neshaminy, which dropped a 63-28 decision to the Raiders Friday night in a PIAA District One Class AAAA semifinal.

“If we’re playing really well against a defense, it will take us at least four or five plays to score,” said Neshaminy coach Mark Schmidt. “(Coatesville) hits you with one play. Give them credit. They’re a very good team.”

Coatesville (11-2), the No. 13 seed, advanced to next week’s district championship game against the winner of Saturday’s semifinal between third-seeded Pennridge and seventh-seeded Spring-Ford at a neutral site and time to be determined.

No matter the opponent, the Raiders, who amassed 514 yards of total offense, figured to be a handful with their multitude of offensive weapons.

Quarterback Emmett Hunt completed 12 of 14 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns, including bombs of 86, 59 and 60 yards, where he threw the ball 40 to 50 yards in the air and hit wide-open receivers in stride beyond the Neshaminy secondary.

“He’s terrific,” Schmidt said about Hunt.

“We knew from watching him on film that the kid had a cannon,” said Neshaminy defensive back Steve Olenski. “He can really sling it.”

After an 86-yard TD run from Coatesville’s Daquan Worley (17 carries, 182 yards, 3 TDs) on the second play of the first possession of the game, Neshaminy answered with a long, ball-possession drive, aiming not only to put points on the board, but keep the Raiders’ offense off the field.

Senior halfback Nate Hall capped a 15-play, 80-yard, 9 minute, 15 second drive with an 8-yard touchdown run to briefly tie the game at 7.

But that stemming of the tide only lasted a few moments. Coatesville retook the lead for good as Hunt hit Dre Boggs on an 86-yard TD strike on its third play. The Raiders ended up scoring three more times in the second quarter and took a commanding 35-14 lead into halftime.

Neshaminy (9-4) threatened to get back into the game early in the third, as Hall (26 carries, 216 yards, 4 TDs) scored on touchdown runs of 54 and 4 yards and make it 35-28, and momentum seemed to have switched sides.

But that proved short-lived too, as Coatesville answered with a 60-yard TD pass from Hunt to Chris Jones on the third play of the game’s next possession.

The Raiders scored three more times before the game was over, including a 40-yard interception return with two minutes remaining to make it 63-28.

Neshaminy’s remarkable postseason run, which included back-to-back upsets on the road, had come to an end. The Redskins closed out their season with a 9-4 record (5-2 SOL).
