2012-2013 Hawk Wrestling Outlook

This year will mark the 11th year of Hawk Wrestling. After a Decade of Dominance, the 2012-2013 Golden Hawks look to build off of the foundation laid by the many legends that have come before them and add to our rich tradition. This season may be somewhat different than other years.  We have a group of talented young wrestlers and it will be both exciting and challenging to develop their collective and individual talents so they can complete at the highest levels of wrestling. In order to make this happen we will once again wrestle one of the most competitive and challenging schedules in high school wrestling.

Even though we will have a young team, our goal remains consistent --  to wrestle the best competition during the season as preparation for the post-season. Simply because many of our wrestlers may be young, we will not shy away from competition. This year we will again compete in some of the most challenging tournaments in the country - King of the Mountain, Bethlehem Holiday Classic, and our own Escape the Rock Tournament. Additionally, we will start the season off at the Nazareth Tournament. We will compete against some of the best wrestlers in the state and country in these four tournaments. The Hawks will tangle with long time Pennsylvania powerhouse Northampton and participate in the Rockyard Duals which will feature teams from the state of New Jersey. Lastly, we will compete in the District 1 Duals with the goal of advancing to the State Duals and then begin our Road to Hershey.

With the graduation of 6 starters, State Medalists P.J. Steinmetz and Dan Martoccio will lead a group returners and a crop of young wrestlers this season. Trey Balasco will return again for his second season as a student-coach, where he did an outstanding job helping us prepare our athletes for the season.  In addition to Steinmetz and Martoccio, we will expect a lot from our veterans who saw varsity action a year ago. This group of veterans includes Tom Shaaltiel, Harry Murray, Nick Palmer, Matt Bentz, Quinn Moore and David Topham. We are also looking for many of the wrestlers to move up from last year’s Junior Varsity team to add depth to the varsity. Additionally, this year’s team will consist of several promising freshmen, which might be the largest incoming freshmen class we have had in years.

Every year we are fortunate to have a group of dedicated wrestlers and a supportive community (parents, administrators, etc.) and this year looks to be the same. It is this dedication and support that makes the difference every year and we are more than thankful and appreciative. In ten years we have created an incredible tradition and this is demonstrated not only by our overall consistent success, but also by the number of our former wrestlers coming back to help with our program or coaching in other high school wrestling programs. This year we are extremely fortunate to have Michael Rappo, Bryan Knoblauch, Donovan Gilmore, Connor Moore and Dillon Evans (Holland) return as coaches; not to mention the numerous parents that continue to help the program even when their sons have graduated. This year we will call on Hawkeye Nation to help with the CRSD charity COACHES VS. CANCER. Together we can TAKEDOWN CANCER!

We will seize another opportunity to blaze a path to Hershey … Why?… because that’s the way we are!!
