Brandon Garrett – University of Rhode Island (Baseball)

Major:  Communications

Final list of colleges:  Rhode Island, Lackawanna, Bloomsburg, VCU, Rider

Reasons for choosing URI:  “They gave me a nice offer, and just the scenery - everything is close together and in walking distance. It was just a beautiful campus, and they also have a great baseball team.”

What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate baseball?  “Ever since I was young, I’ve wanted to play in college. When I was three, I threw a baseball over my grandmother’s house, and my dad had it on videotape. He knew that I was either going to play football or baseball in college, and I ended up playing baseball.
“After my sophomore, I knew I wasn’t allowed to talk to any schools because I was too young. I had a lot of coaches talking to coach Pesci for me. During my junior year, I started to get a little bit of (interest) from Bloomsburg and Lackawanna Junior College, and my senior year, I talked to URI and Rider, and I finally decided on URI.”

Coach Joe Pesci says:  “Brandon obviously has the ability and talent. He’s really athletic. He had a lot of success as a sophomore, and that’s what propelled him to focus on baseball a lot more. You can teach kids skills, but you can’t teach kids to be competitors. He has an infectious personality, and he’s always running around excited. That’s one of the things some of the college coaches look for. It’s not just his arm strength. It’s the fact that he’s always out there rooting his teammates on. Coaches look for those intangibles – motivation, desire, that competitive edge. Those are things he has that you wish a lot more kids had. Last year he played six different positions for us, and he could excel at all of them. He’s going to Rhode Island to be a pitcher. He could be all-league at any position we needed him to play.”
