MEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) scored 11 points in Temple’s 72-61 win over Towson on Wednesday. He is just 13 away from reaching the 1,000-point milestone. With the win, the Owls improved to 7-1 on the season.
Senior guard Jim Connolly (Souderton) netted 17 of his team high 19 points during the second half to help Philadelphia University come from behind to defeat the College of Saint Rose 67-61 on the second day of the Adelphia Tournament Sunday. In Saturday’s 64-51 loss to Adelphia, Connolly scored a game high 25 points. He had a strong second half for the Rams as he shot 5-of-10 from the field and 5-of-7 at the free throw line on his way to 17 points.
Junior guard AJ Picard (Souderton) contributed 15 points and five rebounds in Goldey-Beacom’s 65-63 loss to Wilmington on Monday night.
Junior Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) scored 21 points, which included a 4-for-5 effort from beyond the arc, to lead Cabrini to an 89-73 win at Rosemont College on Monday night.
Pat Furst (Central Bucks West) contributed six points and three rebounds in Wilkes University’s 99-89 win over Berkeley College on Tuesday.
Sophomore Mike Marvin (Hatboro-Horsham) scored 16 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to notch his seventh double-double of the season in Penn State Abington’s 84-76 loss to Arcadia. In Thursday’s 90-71 loss to Brandywine, Marvin posted yet another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior guard Derek Brooks (North Penn) scored a season high 13 points to go along with four assists in Gettysburg’s 66-52 win over Shenandoah on Saturday.
Junior CJ Aiken (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had a team high eight rebounds and three blocks to go along with six points in St. Joseph’s 65-61 loss to Villanova on Tuesday.
Freshman Ryan Arcidiacono (Neshaminy) contributed six points and two assists in Villanova’s 65-61 win over St. Joe’s.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Junior Brittany Sandone (Souderton) has been named CabriniAthletics.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Dec. 8. The Souderton grad led Cabrini to three victories against CSAC foes during the week. Sandone started the week by tallying 10 points in just 14 minutes of action as the Cavaliers defeated Notre Dame (Md.) 84-23. She shot 4-of-8 with three assists and a steal in the win. Two days later, the junior guard recorded 11 points and a career high six assists in Cabrini’s 73-52 win over Immaculata. She closed the week with a 21-point effort in a 74-46 win at Baptist Bible. Sandone tied a career high with five three-pointers. For the week, Sandone posted 14 points and 4.3 assists per contest. She connected on 45 percent of her field goals attempts, including 6-of-15 from beyond the three-point arc and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Through seven games, Sandone leads the team with 14 points while ranking second in minutes with 29.7. The junior leads the CSAC with a .938 free throw percentage. She also ranks in the league’s top 15 in points, three-point percentage and three-pointers made.
Sophomore Jessica Schmidt (Abington) scored 17 points in Penn State Abington’s 69-65 loss to Arcadia on Saturday. In Thursday’s 69-64 loss to Brandywine, Schmidt pulled down a career high 17 rebounds while adding two blocks. In last Sunday’s 64-46 win over Wilson College, Schmidt tallied a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Freshman Carley Kendall (Souderton) contributed two points, six rebounds and one steal off the bench in Washington College’s 64-53 loss to Catholic University on Saturday.
Freshman guard Helena Gemmell (Council Rock North) had seven points and seven rebounds in East Stroudsburg’s 56-53 overtime loss to Philadelphia University on Saturday.
Freshman Sarah Listenbee (Abington) contributed six points and a career high 10 rebounds in Holy Family’s 80-29 win over Mercy College on Wednesday.
Calla Miller (Central Bucks South) contributed six points and five rebounds in Haverford’s 56-44 win over Eastern University on Saturday. In Haverford’s 64-58 win over Delaware Valley on Wednesday, Miller had five points and five rebounds.
Shannon Barlow (Neshaminy) recorded nine points and 11 rebounds in Delaware Valley’s 64-58 loss to Haverford on Wednesday.
Emily Leer (Abington) contributed six points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal in Villanova’s 61-54 win over Princeton on Wednesday.
Sophomore Natasha Matthews (Norristown) scored a career-high 20 points in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 80-66 win over Emory & Henry on Saturday. Senior Liza Leyes (Upper Dublin) scored six points in her first action of the season.
Shippensburg freshman Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) was named the PSAC Eastern Division Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week for the week ending Dec. 10 after achieving career highs in points and rebounds in her team’s game against Kutztown. It is the third time in four weeks she has received this honor. Knauer scored 24 points and pulled down 18 rebounds against Kutztown, the most by a Raider since the 2010-11 season. By halftime, Knauer had 11 points and eight rebounds, and she was integral to Shippensburg’s late run in the final five minutes despite being in foul trouble. She had six points and seven rebounds in the final 4:19 of play en route to her fourth double-double of the season. Included in her rebounding totals were 11 offensive boards. Through eight games, Knauer leads the conference with an average of 10.3 rebounds per game and ranks 28th in the country. Knauer also ranks eighth in the PSAC with an average of 13.8 points per game. She leads the conference with 46 made free throws.
FIELD HOCKEY
Drexel senior midfielder Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) has been named to the 2012 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Field Hockey Team. Fleischut is one of 11 student-athletes who have earned this award. The award, which includes a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher, is based on voting conducted by the sports information offices of the 28 institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Fleischut, Drexel’s team captain and only senior, led the team in assists with eight and points with 30. She also totaled 11 goals on the year. After the Dragons defeated Northeastern in overtime for the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association field hockey title, Fleischut was named the Most Outstanding Performer. She was also selected First Team for the Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Mid-Atlantic Region and First Team All-CAA for the second straight season. The CB West alum received Second Team All-American honors by the Longstreth/NFHCA. Fleischut also competed in the NFHCA Division I Senior Game where she tallied a pair of goals and an assist in a series of four 25-minute periods including a game against the US Women’s National Team. Fleischut is majoring in health sciences.
La Salle senior Becca Chylack (Souderton) has been named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Field Hockey Team. Selections are made based on voting conducted by the sports information offices of the 28 institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Chylack was named to the team for the third straight season and finished an outstanding career for the Explorers in November. She became to first Explorer in program history to earn All-Atlantic 10 honors four times in her career after receiving second team recognition for the third straight year in 2012. She was a first team all-conference pick as a freshman. This fall, Chylack scored five goals and assisted on another for 11 points. She closed her career seventh on La Salle’s all-time points list with 65 and eighth on the goals list with 26. Chylack also was an Academic All-Atlantic 10 selection for the third straight season. She holds a 3.84 GPA as a nursing major.
FOOTBALL
Shippensburg junior defensive end Jake Metz (Souderton) was named to the 2012 Associated Press (AP) Little All-America second team. He and teammate Zach Zulli, who earned first team honors, are the first SU players honored by the AP since 2005. The AP Little All-America team is made up of players from Division II, Division III and NAIA. Metz set a new school record this season with 11.5 sacks (tied for eighth most in Division II, tied for third most in the PSAC this season). He also recorded 19.0 tackles for loss (16th most in Division II, second in PSAC). He has forced a league-leading five fumbles, tied for third most in Division II, and has recorded at least 0.5 tackles for loss in 11 of 13 games. His 76 total tackles ranks third on the Red Raiders. Metz also was picked by his peers as the Kevin Mylett Award Winner (SU’s Defensive Player of the Year).
MEN’S SWIMMING
The La Salle University men’s swim and dive team completed competition for the 2012 fall semester. Some of the highlights included senior Daniel Fitzgerald (Upper Dublin) taking first in the 100 backstroke at the Bucknell Invitational with a time of 50.47. Freshman CJ Gimpel had several clutch performances to start off his collegiate career. The diver recorded a third place finish on the 1 meter at the Bucknell Invitational with a score of 274.10. Later in the meet, Gimpel notched a sixth place finish on the 3 meter board, posting a score of 280.60. Gimpel also picked up wins on both boards against Villanova.
WRESTLING
Matt Rappo (Council Rock South) defeated 25th-ranked Nick Hucke 7-5 at 141 in Bloomsburg’s 22-9 loss to seventh-ranked Missouri on Sunday at Madison Square Garden as part of Grapple at the Garden. Rappo opened the match with a takedown just 15 seconds in to lead 2-0. Hucke escaped at 2:05 to make it 2-1. Rappo had another takedown with 10 seconds left before Hucke escaped, giving Rappo a 4-2 lead after one period. He led 4-3 heading into the third and got a takedown with 1:08 to go to take a 6-3 advantage. Rucke with a reversal made it 6-5, but Rappo got one point for Rucke’s illegal move to go up 7-5. The event was the first ever collegiate wrestling event at the world famous arena.
