MEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half, including two key three-pointers in the final six minutes, to lead East Stroudsburg to a 57-55 upset of No. 16 IUP on Friday night. In Saturday’s 70-62 win over California (Pa.), Grant scored nine points.
Junior guard Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) scored a season high 24 points, including four three-pointers, but Bloomsburg University dropped an 81-55 decision to Gannon University on Friday night. Christmas was 8-for-18 from the field and had a pair of assists. With his 4-for-10 performance from beyond the arc, Christmas extended his streak to 20 consecutive games with a three-pointer. In Saturday’s 65-52 loss to Mercyhurst, Christmas had seven points and pulled down four rebounds.
Marcus Badger (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had four assists in Randolph-Macon’s 76-40 win over Manhattanville on Sunday afternoon. In Saturday’s 66-65 loss to Randolph, Badger had nine points.
Sophomore Michael Guldin (Pennridge) contributed six assists in DeSales University’s 80-57 win over Centenary College (NJ) last Sunday.
Ryan Connolly (Souderton) had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in Kutztown’s 70-62 loss to No. 16 Indiana (Pa.). It was the second double-double of Connolly’s career. In Friday’s 79-71 loss to California (Pa.), Connolly shot 5-of-9, including three three-point field goals, and finished with 13 points to go along with a team high eight rebounds.
Senior guard Jim Connolly (Souderton) scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds in Philadelphia University’s 77-53 win over Post on Saturday. Junior guard Nick Christian (Bensalem) connected on four-of-five shots, including both of his three-pointers, to finish with 11 points. In last Sunday’s 62-57 loss to No. 13 Assumption, Connolly scored 13 points while Christian had six rebounds.
Junior CJ Aiken (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 19 points, pulled down eight rebounds and blocked a season high six shots in St. Joseph’s 63-49 win over Drexel last Monday. In Saturday’s 70-60 win over Morgan State, Aiken had eight points, four rebounds and two blocked shots.
Derek Brooks (North Penn) scored 12 points and also had five assists while Connor Poston (Hatboro-Horsham) – in his first collegiate start - scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds in Gettysburg’s 69-53 win over Washington College on Saturday. For Washington College, Dave Knox (Central Bucks South) contributed two points and five rebounds off the bench. In Wednesday’s 58-40 loss to Randolph-Macon, Poston scored eight points while Brooks distributed four assists.
Sophomore guard Sean Brooks (North Penn) scored a career high 12 points off the bench in Washington College’s 74-73 loss to Frostburg last Sunday in the consolation game of the Randolph-Macon Coaches Classic.
Junior guard Kenny Gula (Quakertown) scored 14 points and pulled down four rebounds in Moravian’s 66-62 loss to Goucher on Saturday. In Thursday’s 80-72 win over New Jersey City University in the championship game of the 35th Annual Greyhound Classic, Gula had nine points and three rebounds. In Wednesday’s 63-54 win over Kean University in the opening round of the tournament, Gula had nine points and three assists.
Sophomore Sam Pygatt (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored a season high 14 points in Shippensburg’s 82-74 loss to Edinboro on Saturday.
Senior Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) scored 26 points in Temple’s 69-62 loss to No. 6 Kansas on Sunday. The Owls actually had the lead down the stretch, but after committing just two turnovers the entire game, the Owls’ third turnover gave the Jayhawks a lead they would not lose. In last Monday’s 75-57 win over Bowling Green, Wyatt had seven points and tied a career high with eight assists. Junior Dalton Pepper (Pennsbury) was perfect from the field, going three-for-three to rack up a season-high 10 points. The win was the 1800th in program history.
Junior point guard Jesse Krasna (Pennsbury) scored 13 points in Ursinus College’s 65-64 win in double overtime over Johns Hopkins on Saturday.
Junior guard AJ Picard (Souderton) contributed 14 points, three assists, three rebounds and three steals in Goldey-Beacom’s 61-58 loss to Bloomfield on Saturday.
Junior Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) scored 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, in Cabrini’s 94-56 win over visiting Cairn University. The 94 points marks Cabrini’s highest scoring effort of the season. Senior Goran Dulac (Pennsbury) had seven points and a team high nine rebounds. In Wednesday’s 92-77 loss to Wesley College, Rafferty scored 15 points.
Joe Renzi (Abington) contributed nine points and seven rebounds in Elizabethtown’s 73-63 win over Albright on Saturday. In Thursday’s 77-76 win over Gwynedd Mercy, Renzi had eight assists.
Pat Furst (Central Bucks West) scored nine points and pulled down two rebounds in Wilkes University’s 71-68 loss to Scranton in the final game of the 2013 Cross Country Challenge on Thursday night. Furst earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
Sophomore Mike Marvin (Hatboro-Horsham) collected another double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds in Penn State Abington’s 82-80 win over SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday. In last Sunday’s 81-74 loss to Drew University in the consolation game of the Red Robin Holiday Tournament, Marvin led all scorers with 28 points to go along with 12 rebounds.
Dan Werth (Souderton) scored eight points off the bench in Eastern University’s 68-66 loss to Susquehanna University on Thursday.
Villanova freshman guard Ryan Arcidiacono (Neshaminy) was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week for the second time this season for the week ending Dec. 31. In Villanova’s only action last week, the Wildcats downed New Jersey Institute of Technology 70-60 as Arcidiacono led the way with 17 points, three assists and zero turnovers in 30 minutes of playing time. Arcidiacono is second among the Wildcats in scoring with 11.5 points per game and 32.5 minutes per outing, tops on the Villanova roster. He also averages 3.5 assists per contest and has started all 13 games for Villanova.
Arcidiacono scored 32 points – which included seven three-pointers - to lead Villanova to a 98-86 overtime win over St. John’s on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Freshman Helena Gemmell (Council Rock North) contributed seven points, four rebounds and three steals in East Stroudsburg’s 65-50 loss to California (Pa.) on Saturday.
Freshman Alex Wheatley (Council Rock South) collected six points, five rebounds and two assists in Princeton’s 74-59 win over Drexel last Monday.
Emily Leer (Abington) contributed four points off the bench in Villanova’s 60-37 win over Dartmouth last Sunday.
Sam Simononis (Pennridge) scored nine points in Vermont’s 63-60 win over New Hampshire on Wednesday.
Sophomore Jessica Schmidt (Abington) tallied her fifth double-double of the season, scoring 21 points on 10-for-13 shooting and a career high in rebounds with 19 in Penn State Abington’s 85-43 win over SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday.
Shannon Barlow (Neshaminy) scored 13 points in Delaware Valley’s 84-78 road victory over Marywood University on Saturday.
Junior Brittany Sandone (Souderton) was named CabriniAthletics.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Dec. 30. This marks the second time this season she has claimed the honor. Sandone led the Cavaliers to a pair of wins at the Land of Magic Classic last weekend at Daytona Beach, Florida. The junior guard tallied 11 points in Cabrini’s 70-34 win over Western New England University. She followed that with a season high 23 points in the Blue and White’s 63-54 win over Kenyon College on 8-of-12 shooting, including 6-of-9 from beyond the three-point line. Sandone set career highs with eight made field goals and six made three pointers. Her sixth three-pointer of the game gave the Cavaliers a 52-50 lead with 4:12 to play, a lead Cabrini would not relinquish. Through 10 games, Sandone is averaging a career best 13.8 points per game. She also ranks second on the team in minutes (29.9) and assists (1.9). The junior also lists among the Colonial States Athletic Conference top performers in scoring, free throw percentage (.870), three-point shooting percentage (.319) and three pointers made (2.2).
Sandone tallied a team high 15 points, all in the second half, in Cabrini’s 58-46 win over Keystone College on Saturday. In Thursday’s 63-45 win over Albright College, Sandone scored 20 points, her fourth 20-point performance of the season.
Tori Steinberg (Central Bucks South) scored eight points off the bench in Ursinus College’s 60-40 loss to DeSales on Saturday.
Freshman Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) recorded her sixth double-double in seven games in Shippensburg’s 75-52 win over Slippery Rock on Saturday, contributing 20 points and 10 rebounds. Knauer connected on 9-of-16 shots from the floor. In Friday’s 63-53 loss to Edinboro, Knauer scored 11 points.
Sophomore Natasha Matthews (Norristown) scored 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 58-52 loss to Gettysburg in the Days Inn Tournament Championship game on Thursday. Junior Jordan Dominic (Pennridge) added 13 points and connected on three three-pointers. In Wednesday’s opening round 70-66 win over Salisbury, Matthews had 11 points.
Danielle Derr (Upper Dublin) scored 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds while also handing out two assists in Bloomsburg’s 86-65 win over Philadelphia University last Sunday afternoon.
Senior Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) contributed 23 points, five steals, four assists and three rebounds in Millersville’s 69-64 loss to Edinboro on Saturday. In Friday’s 68-39 win over Slippery Rock, Newman had eight points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. Ashleigh Spence (Bensalem) had two points and two rebounds. In last Monday’s 78-61 win over Missouri S&T, Newman had 10 points to go along with a season-high seven assists and five steals.
Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) recorded her second double-double of the season in Lock Haven’s 75-64 loss to West Chester on Saturday, contributing a game high 16 points and a career high 12 rebounds. Her previous career high was 11 boards. In Friday’s 74-53 win over Cheyney, Ryan scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Colleen Hinde (Wissahickon) scored 12 points in Neumann University’s 76-66 loss to King’s College on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 65-41 loss to Moravian, Hinde pulled down eight rebounds.
Senior guard Ashley Rosario (Harry S Truman) scored 13 points in Goldey-Beacom’s 52-49 win over Bloomfield on Saturday.
CROSS COUNTRY
John Gondak (Central Bucks West) has been promoted to Associate Head Coach for Track and Field/Cross Country Coach at Penn State University. Gondak has coached some of the Nittany Lions' most successful athletes, including former multiple Big Ten champion and All-American Ryan Foster as well as current senior standouts Casimir Loxsom and sophomore Robby Creese. He has also made an impact on the recruiting trail, bringing in top-notch talent from the high school middle distance and distance ranks. Gondak has coached a total of 10 USTFCCCA First Team All-Americans and 12 Big Ten Champions since arriving on campus in 2006. He has also helped NIttany Lion athletes to a total of 17 Penn State records. Under Gondak's watch, Foster and Loxom have become the most successful athletes in men's program history on the Big Ten stage. Loxom now owns five Big Ten titles - the most of any male athlete in program history - while Foster ended his Penn State career with four total conference victories.
FOOTBALL
Syracuse offensive tackle Justin Pugh (Council Rock South) will forgo his final season of eligibility with the Orange and enter the 2013 NFL Draft. A 2011 and 2012 All-BIG EAST First Team selection, Pugh started every game he played at Syracuse. The team co-captain was also honored as a 2012 ECAC Division I Football All-Star and 2012 ESPN.com All-BIG EAST Team selection. Pugh has completed his degree requirements in finance. After missing the first four games of the 2012 season with an injury, Pugh returned to the lineup to anchor an offensive line that paved the way for 1,000-yard rusher Jerome Smith. In addition, the Orange averaged 187.0 yards per game on the ground, the program’s most effective ground attack since 2004. Pugh and the rest of the SU front five allowed just 16 sacks this season. “Justin is a big part of this program turning the corner,” coach Doug Marrone said in a news release issued by Syracuse. “He came in with us four years ago and gave us everything he had. We are proud of him for earning his degree and for what he accomplished on the field as a leader of this team. He has earned it. I believe he will be very successful at the next level and in everything he does outside of football.” The CR South alum was a key player for the Orange offense that ranked eighth nationally and first in the BIG EAST in third down conversion (49.3 percent) and led the conference in total offensive (476.3). Prior to the 2012 season, Pugh was named to the 2012 Rotary Lombardi Award Official Watch and the 2012 Outland Trophy Watch List, which recognizes the best interior linemen in college football.
Temple senior placekicker/punter Brandon McManus (North Penn) has been named the recipient of the 2012 College Football Performance Awards Specialist Trophy, the CFPA announced. “After an extensive review of the existing data, literature, and evidence, it has been determined that Temple’s Brandon McManus finished the 2012 season with the strongest combined placekicking, kickoff and punting performance in Division 1 FBS college football,” said Bradley C. Smith, Executive Director of the CFPA. McManus ended his collegiate career as Temple’s career leader in scoring (338), punting average (45.4), field goals made (60) and field goals attempted (83). The 2012 first team All-BIG EAST punter and 2012 second team All-BIG East kicker set the season record for field goal accuracy (82.4) and set game records at Army for extra points made (9) and attempted (9). McManus played in every game of his collegiate career. In 2012, McManus led the Owls in scoring (74) and went 32-of-33 in PATs. He punted 54 times for 2,433 yards (45.1 average), including a career long 68-yard punt against Rutgers. He had 15 punts longer than 50 yards. McManus was 6-of-7 on field goals of 40-plus yards, including a 50-yarder in the win over South Florida. He also kicked the game-winning field goal at Connecticut in overtime and contributed 40 touchbacks on 50 kickoffs (71.4 percent). Throughout the 2012 season, McManus was recognized with 11 weekly CFPA honors. Last fall, McManus was named to the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team for his community service efforts and was recognized at the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. McManus will be honored by the CFPA on March 10 during the Temple men’s basketball game against Virginia Commonwealth at the Liacouras Center.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Green Mountain College senior Casey McGill (Upper Merion) was named to the 2012 NSCAA Scholar All-East Region team. The Upper Merion grad, a four-year soccer player, is a secondary education major and boasts a GPA of 3.56.
University of Scranton senior Emily Farrell (Souderton) was named one of six Landmark Senior Scholar Athletes for the fall. The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 and are selected based on their accomplishments in athletics and academics. Farrell was named the Women’s Soccer Senior Scholar Athlete. A four-year starting defender, 
Farrell earned first team All-Landmark honors in 2010. She helped Scranton to three consecutive Landmark Championships while adding four goals from the back line, including the game winner in the title game this season. Farrell was a member of the Royals’ defensive unit that did not allow a goal to a conference opponent this fall. Farrell has a 3.97 cumulative GPA while majoring in early and primary teacher education. She is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and most recently was named to the Capital One Academic All-American Third Team. Farrell was named to the Landmark All-Academic team and earned Landmark Honor Roll recognition for the third time in her career. She also has made the Scranton Dean’s List every semester. Farrell is a member of the Student-Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC), Council for Exceptional Children and the Student Education Club of the University of Scranton.
SOFTBALL
Samantha Creamer (Neshaminy) was selected as a Softball All-American Scholar Athlete by the National Fastpitch College Association for maintaining a 3.5 GPA at Cornell University.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Penn State sophomore TJ Schenkel (Council Rock South) finished 30th on the three-meter board with a score of 246.20 at this weekend’s Tennessee Collegiate Diving Invitational. He placed 25th in platform diving with a score of 212.60. It was the sophomore’s highest score on the platform this season. Schenkel finished 33rd on the one-meter board with a score of 231.60.
Chris Willcox (Upper Dublin) was part of the winning 400 medley relay team that posted a time of 3:34.40 in Hartwick’s sweep of Union (145-96) and Springfield (128-113) in a tri-meet on Saturday. Willcox had two second place individual finishes. He was second in the 200 IM (2:02.52) and the 200 butterfly (1:59).
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Paige Whitemire (Souderton) was part of Penn State’s 200 medley relay that posted a winning time of 1:45.90 in a training meet against North Carolina on Thursday. She also was part of the winning 3x100 breaststroke that posted a time of 3:17.33.
Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) was part of the University of Arizona’s winning 200 medley relay team that posted a time of 1:41.87 in Arizona’s sweep of Oregon State, New Mexico State and Northern Arizona State on Friday. She finished fourth in the 50 free with a time of 24.07.
WRESTLING
Penn State junior James Vollrath (Council Rock South) was the fifth seed entering the Southern Scuffle, which was held at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. He notched the biggest upset of the finals, grabbling a 2-1 (tb) win over top-seeded Alex Dieringer of Oklahoma State. Dieringer was ranked No. 8 nationally. Vollrath moved into the finals to face No. 14 Jedd Moore of Virginia. As in his prior bout against a ranked foe, Vollrath took the ranked Tiger into extra time before dropping a hard-fought 3-1 (sv) decision. The second place finish came as a result of his 4-1 record with two majors. Vollrath is 20-5 overall. Penn State, ranked No. 1 in the latest Intermat TIP, claimed its third straight Southern Scuffle team crown, running away from second place Oklahoma State by posting 178.5 points to 158.0 for the Cowboys.
Ursinus College sophomore Richard Jasinski (Pennridge) pinned Evan Robinson in 6:47 at 157 the Bears 43-3 win over Trinity at the North/South Duals hosted by Ursinus on Saturday. Jasinski won by fall over Morgan Hoffman in the Bears’ 42-9 win over West Chester. He also won by fall over Alex LaBeef in Ursinus College’s 35-7 win over Rhode Island College and notched a 7-3 decision over Alec Horan in the Bears’ 16-15 loss to Delaware Valley. Ursinus finished the tournament with a 5-1 record.
