Christina Bascara – La Salle University (Softball)

Major:  Biology/Pre-Med

Final list of colleges:  La Salle, Lafayette, Penn, Haverford

Reasons for choosing La Salle:  “It came down to - in the end I was looking for a good academic school. We’re students before athletes, and as soon as I went there, I fell in love with the science department. It’s brand new, I talked to the pre-med advisor, and he told me everything they do to support their biology majors. Softball was just really a big plus with the coach and the whole program.”

What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate softball?  “It was something that I always looked forward to since I was in grade school. When I got to the high school level, it was the point where it became real, and as you were looking for that higher level team, the recruiting process became so tangible as you went to showcases after showcases. A lot of the recruiting doesn’t happen until your junior year, especially in the northeast. It was probably set in my mind since my freshman year that I would be playing college softball.”

Coach Frank McSherry says:  “Christina will be a third-year varsity starter. Hitting-wise, Christina has just been a tremendous hitter from her sophomore year on. Our ninth grade coach said, ‘This is the best hitter I’ve coached since Kat Welch.’ Kat graduated in 2005 and went on to play four years at Princeton, and she was definitely the best hitter we’ve ever coached, and he said, ‘She’s the best hitter since Kat Welch,’ and that has certainly come to fruition. She’s so unassuming that maybe she even takes some people by surprise because she doesn’t look like a big time hitter, but she has a lot of power, great eye-hand coordination and a lot of patience.
“Defensively, she’s very versatile. She’s been a shortstop her whole career, but we needed a third baseman. We had Mackenzie Obert at shortstop, so we moved her to third base, and she’s done a really nice job for us the past two years at third base. We could put her anywhere, and she could play. She’s just a quick study. She picks things up so quickly and so well, and she’s a smart kid.”

La Salle coach Ron Shoemaker says:  “Christina is coming off an incredible fall ball season. She hit multiple home runs and opened eyes everywhere she played. We are so happy to have Christina and her passion for softball in our program.”
