BASEBALL
Freshman JT Crits (Wissahickon) smacked a two-run double down the right field line for his first collegiate hit in La Salle’s 8-7 win over Toledo on Friday. In La Salle’s 9-5 loss to Wright State, Dan Callahan (Council Rock South) started his first career game behind the plate.

Freshman Reed Shuttle (North Penn) threw a scoreless inning in Rutgers University’s 7-0 loss to No. 28 Miami on Sunday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
University of Texas sophomore Jaylen Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was named to the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 Men’s Basketball Team, earning second team honors. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests.

Michael Guldin (Pennridge) contributed 18 points and four assists in DeSales University’s 85-74 win over Eastern on Saturday. In Tuesday’s win over Wilkes, Guldin had seven points and four assists. In last Sunday’s 64-55 win over FDU-Florham, Guldin had four points and two assists.

Joe Renzi (Abington) contributed five points, five rebounds and three assists in Elizabethtown’s 64-50 win over Stevenson on Tuesday night.

Washington College sophomore Sean Brooks (North Penn) was recognized for making the Centennial Conference men’s basketball Play of the Week. With the score tied 70-70 in overtime during the Shoremen’s Feb. 6 home game against Swathmore, Brooks grabbed the rebound of an errant three-point attempt and put the ball back up and through the hoop just before the buzzer sounded to give Washington a 72-70 victory. Brooks finished with 885 votes (53 percent) in the online fan poll.

Brooks contributed 11 points and three rebounds in Washington College’s 74-72 loss to Ursinus on Wednesday.

Senior Derek Brooks (North Penn) had a career-high nine rebounds to go along with seven assists and five points in Gettysburg’s 75-50 loss to McDaniel College on Saturday. Teammate Connor Poston (Hatboro-Horsham) added five points. In Wednesday’s 61-58 loss to Centennial Conference-leading Dickinson, Brooks contributed 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Temple University senior guard Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) was named Player of the Week by both the Atlantic 10 Conference and the Philadelphia Big 5 for the week ending Feb. 10. It is the third time he has earned A10 honors this season and second time he has garnered Big 5 accolades. Wyatt, the Atlantic 10 Conference’s leading scorer (18.9 PPG), averaged 22.5 points and shot 53.8 percent from the field in a 2-0 week for the Owls. He scored 25 points and recorded four assists, two blocks and two steals in an 89-88 win over Charlotte. He followed that with 20 points, including the game-winning three-pointer with 7.1 seconds left, in a 72-71 come-from-behind win at Dayton. The Norristown alum is averaging 24.3 points per game in the last nine outings. He was the game-high scorer 11 times on the season, including both games last week.

Wyatt topped all scorers with 24 points in Temple’s 83-82 win over Massachusetts on Saturday. It was a Temple record fifth straight one-point game for the Owls. According to STATS, LLC, the streak is the longest in the nation by a Division I team and the longest since the start of the 1996-97 season. STATS, LLC does not have data going further back than that season. Junior Dalton Pepper (Pennsbury) contributed six points, including two late layups – one on a steal and basket to give Temple a 72-66 lead with 6:07 on the clock. In Thursday’s 84-83 loss to Duquesne, Wyatt scored a career-high 35 points. Pepper had a season-high 13 points, contributing the last five to cut the deficit to 80-78.

Freshman Ryan Arcidiacono (Neshaminy) scored 25 points in Villanova’s 70-61 win over Connecticut on Saturday. He contributed 17 of those points in a first half that saw the Wildcats connect on just 9-of-28 shots. The Wildcats trailed 33-30 at the intermission. In Tuesday’s 68-50 loss to Cincinnati, Arcidiacono had seven points, five assists and two steals.

Tim Abruzzo (Pennridge) contributed 11 points with three three-point shots in Navy Prep's 72-51 loss to St. Thomas More on Tuesday.

CJ Aiken (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had 10 points and four blocked shots in St. Joseph’s 61-55 win over Richmond on Wednesday.

Cabrini junior Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) was named to the 2013 Colonial States Athletic Conference second team. The Upper Merion grad established himself among the best shooters in the CSAC during the 2012-13 campaign. He leads the team with 13.4 points per game, good for eighth in the league. He tops the conference from the free throw line at 0.906, ranks second from three-point range at 0.491 and sixth in overall field goal shooting at 0.502. He also ranks fourth in the league in three pointers made per game with 2.2.

Rafferty scored a team-high 17 points, which included a 5-of-6 effort from three-point range, in Cabrini’s 81-56 win over Marywood in its regular season finale on Wednesday night. By virtue of their 16-2 conference mark, the Cavaliers have secured a bye into the semifinal of the upcoming CSAC Tournament. The Blue and White will host a semifinal round game on Tuesday.

Pat Furst (Central Bucks West) scored eight points and handed out three assists in Wilkes University’s 82-74 loss to DeSales on Tuesday.

Zach Thomas (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed six points off the bench in Neumann University’s 66-40 win over Immaculata on Saturday in an opening round game of the Colonial States Athletic Association Tournament. In last Monday’s 61-59 loss to Immaculata, Thomas had nine points and five rebounds. Teammate Steve Warhola (Neshaminy) had two assists.

Andrew Stress (Council Rock North) contributed four points, two rebounds and two steals in FDU-Florham’s 64-55 loss to DeSales last Sunday. In FDU-Florham’s 59-49 win over Eastern on Tuesday, Stress had six points, three rebounds and two steals.

Dan Werth (Souderton) scored 12 points and also contributed four assists and four rebounds in Eastern University’s 85-74 loss to DeSales on Saturday.

East Stroudsburg University sophomore guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was named the Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Organization’s Pete Nevins Player of the Year for his performance for the Warriors’ basketball team. He is the first sophomore to receive the men’s award since Kutztown’s Dave Ben in 2006-07. There were 12 players selected on the organization’s ‘Team of the Year,’ which recognizes a men’s and women’s player from each of the six area schools. Grant is the top scorer for ESU’s team for the second straight season, averaging 17.9 points per game. He averaged 20 points a game during ESU’s 13-game winning streak, the second longest winning-season streak in school history. He led the Warriors in scoring in nine straight games from Jan. 11 through Feb. 6, averaging 22.9 points. He has eight 20-point games this season. Grant led ESU with 13.9 PPG as a freshman on last year’s PSAC championship team. He was the first freshman to lead a PSAC champion in scoring in at least 25 years. He is fifth in the PSAC in scoring, third in three-point percentage (41.0), sixth in three-pointers per game (2.4) and tied for sixth in steals per game (1.9) heading into the final three weeks of the season.

Grant scored eight points in No. 9 East Stroudsburg’s 83-58 win over Mansfield on Wednesday. It is the first time he missed double figures since Jan. 5. Grant did not play in East Stroudsburg’s 87-77 loss to Shippensburg on Saturday, a loss that ended the school record-tying 14-game winning streak.

Marcus Badger (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored eight points in Randolph-Macon’s 70-52 win over Randolph on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 81-60 win over Shenandoah, Badger contributed six points and three assists.

Junior point guard Chris Davis (Norristown) hit back-to-back three’s late in the shot clock as Alvernia pushed a three-point lead to nine with three minutes to play en route to a 73-67 win over Messiah College on Saturday. Davis finished with 15 points and six assists with only one turnover in the team’s sixth straight win. He has a streak of three straight games with at least five assists and only one turnover. In Tuesday’s 70-59 win over Hood, Davis scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting to go with six assists and just one turnover. His defense also was lauded by coach Mike Miller. “Defensively, Chris Davis guarded everyone from their point guard to No. 43, the tall center,” Alvernia’s coach said. “He guards everyone from post people to point guards to guys coming off screens.”

Sophomore Skylar Scrivano (Central Bucks East) had six points and four rebounds in Columbia’s 58-55 loss to Brown on Friday.

Junior guard AJ Picard (Souderton) scored 17 points, connecting on 8-of-13 shots from the floor, in Goldey-Beacom’s 89-69 loss to Dominican on Saturday. He also contributed seven rebounds and five assists. In Wednesday’s 72-62 win over Nyack, Picard scored 19 points and added four rebounds. He connected on 6-of-10 shots from the floor and 4-of-6 free throws.

Freshman Aaron Morgan (Council Rock North) contributed seven points off the bench in UMBC’s 92-86 loss to New Hampshire on Wednesday.

Sophomore Sam Pygatt (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had nine points in Shippensburg’s 87-77 win over No. 9 East Stroudsburg on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 68-59 win over Bloomsburg, Pygatt had 11 points and four rebounds.

Senior guard Jim Connolly (Souderton) scored a team-high 30 points in Philadelphia University’s 98-95 triple overtime win over Dominican on Thursday. He scored 21 of those points in the three overtime sessions. Connolly was a perfect 16-for-16 from the foul line, including 8-for-8 in the second extra session. Junior guard Nick Christian (Bensalem) tied a career high with 21 points and nine rebounds. His biggest play came with a half-second left in the first overtime when he buried a three-pointer to tie the score 77 and send the game to a second overtime. In Tuesday’s 68-60 win over Wilmington, Connolly scored 11 points and Christian contributed seven points and eight rebounds. 

Freshman guard Mark Wonderling (Souderton) scored eight points in Ursinus College’s 80-56 loss to Muhlenberg in Saturday’s season finale. Teammate Jesse Krasna (Pennsbury) had five assists. In Wednesday’s 74-72 win over Washington College, Krasna had nine points, eight rebounds and 10 assists.

Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) contributed eight points and three steals in Bloomsburg’s 96-75 loss to West Chester on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 68-59 loss to Shippensburg, Christmas scored 12 points with three three-pointers to go along with four rebounds.

Freshman Ryan Connolly (Souderton) scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to match his career highs in both points and rebounds in Kutztown’s 96-67 loss to West Chester on Thursday.

Mike Marvin (Hatboro-Horsham) scored 22 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Penn State Abington to a 68-59 win over Lancaster Bible College on Wednesday night. In Sunday’s 104-73 loss to Penn State Harrisburg, Marvin had eight points and 10 rebounds.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Ginny Edwards (Central Bucks South)
grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds in Wilkes University’s 67-54 loss to King’s College in Saturday’s season finale.

Freshman Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) led all players with 22 points and 14 rebounds in Shippensburg’s 67-47 win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday. It was Knauer’s 10th double-double of the season. She connected on 9-of-10 shots from the field.

Freshman guard Helena Gemmell (Council Rock North) had five points, five rebounds and four steals in East Stroudsburg’s 67-39 win over Mansfield on Wednesday. The win secured the sixth and final playoff spot in the PSAC East women’s basketball field for ESU.

Natasha Matthews (Norristown) scored a game-high 25 points and also had 14 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 101-84 win over Rosemont on Saturday. The Norristown alum was 9-of-12 from the field and was a perfect 7-for-7 at the foul line. Teammate Kristen Fuery (Upper Dublin) added nine points and five assists. In Wednesday’s 82-52 win over Neumann, Matthews scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Jordan Dominic (Pennridge) chipped in 10 points.

Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) scored seven points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in Lock Haven’s 79-62 loss to California (Pa.) on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 90-86 win over Slippery Rock, Ryan scored 15 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, setting a new career high. The junior forward was 6-of-9 from the field. It was Ryan’s fifth double-double of the season.

Sophomore forward Jessica Schmidt (Abington) pulled down 10 rebounds in Penn State Abington’s 71-62 loss to Penn State Harrisburg in Saturday’s season finale. In Friday’s 60-55 loss to St. Elizabeth, Schmidt posted a double-double, collecting 12 points and 15 rebounds. In Wednesday’s 62-34 loss to Lancaster Bible College, Schmidt had eight rebounds.

Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds in Millersville’s 63-58 win over Kutztown on Saturday. She also had five assists, two steals and two blocks while committing just one turnover. In Millersville’s 76-45 win over Cheyney on Tuesday, Newman, who scored six points to go along with three assists and two rebounds, put points on the board for the 100th consecutive game of her career. She is one of the seven members of the 1,300-point club and is just 56 points shy of fourth place on the school’s all-time scoring list. With 58 points throughout the course of the rest of the season, Newman would become just the fourth player in program history to pass the 1,400-point plateau.

Calla Miller (Central Bucks South) contributed nine points in Swarthmore’s 45-41 loss to Haverford on Saturday.

Sam Simononis (Pennridge) came off the bench to score a team-high 11 points to help lead Vermont past Stony Brook 46-43 before a season-high crowd of 3,006.

Tori Steinberg (Central Bucks South) netted 14 points in Ursinus College’s 75-63 loss to Muhlenberg in Saturday’s season finale. In Wednesday’s 61-59 win over Washington College, she scored eight points.

Freshman Carley Kendall (Souderton) had six points, five rebounds and two steals in Washington College’s 86-50 win over Bryn Mawr on Saturday.

Sarah Kiely (Council Rock North) contributed seven points and two steals in American University’s 71-55 loss to Lehigh on Wednesday.

Senior guard Ashley Rosario (Harry S Truman) scored the game-winning basket on a layup as time expired as Goldey-Beacom rallied to extend its school record win streak to eight straight games with a 61-60 win over Dominican College on Saturday. In addition to scoring 11 points, Rosario also set a school record by playing in the 110th game of her college career. The team has won 15 of its last 18 games. In Wednesday’s 72-43 win over Nyack, Rosario came off the bench to contribute 15 points.

Junior guard Daniella Ciccarone (Quakertown) scored eight points and handed out a game-high six assists in St. Thomas University’s 83-42 win over Southeastern on Friday night. With the win, this year’s squad (25-2, 13-0) became the winningest team in school history. It was the 13th consecutive win for St. Thomas. In Tuesday’s 64-43 win over Florida Memorial, Ciccarone contributed seven points and six rebounds.

Junior Brittany Sandone (Souderton) contributed 13 points and four steals in Cabrini’s 66-40 win over Marywood on Saturday. The win was the 17th in a row for Cabrini, which is 22-3 on the season and a perfect 16-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.

Danielle Derr (Upper Dublin) contributed six points, three rebounds and two assists in Bloomsburg’s 64-54 win over West Chester on Saturday.

Emily Leer (Abington) contributed six points, three rebounds and one steal in Villanova’s 57-44 win over Georgetown on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 63-34 win over Seton Hall, Leer had six points, two rebounds and a blocked shot. In last Sunday’s 60-56 loss to Marquette, Leer had six points, three rebounds and one steal.

Colleen Hinde (Wissahickon) had five rebounds and four points in Neumann University’s 82-52 loss to Gwynedd-Mercy on Wednesday.

SOFTBALL
Sophomore catcher Gabbie Berry (Norristown) had a pair of hits and an RBI in Millersville’s 13-1 win over Shepherd on Saturday. In Millersville’s 3-1 loss to Glenville State, Berry delivered an RBI groundout.

Kim Begley (Abington) went 3-for-4 in West Chester’s 6-1 loss to Shepherd University in the opening game of the Shaw Challenge in Raleigh, N.C., on Friday. Devon Utterback (Central Bucks South) threw 3.1 scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit while striking out four and walking two. In West Chester’s 8-3 win over Concord later in the day, Jess Schuck (Council Rock South) hit a home run and Ali Vavala (Central Bucks East) collected a career-high three hits and scored a pair of runs from her third spot in the lineup. Schuck went 2-for-4 with a two-run shot in the fourth inning. Erin Quense (Neshaminy) hit an RBI single in the sixth.

MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING

West Chester’s Calvin Starosta (Upper Dublin) won the 100 backstroke in 50.44 at the 2013 PSAC Championships on Saturday. He also was part of the first place 400 medley relay team that hit an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 3:20.43 and also established a new PSAC record in the event. For Starosta, it marked the fifth relay on which he has participated that won a conference title. Starosta also was part of the 200 medley relay that hit an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 1:31.9 while capturing first place.
Elizabethtown’s Ryan Supplee (Hatboro-Horsham) finished 10th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:24.18 at the MAC Championships last Sunday.

Washington & Jefferson freshman Kevin Dunigan (North Penn) posted the Presidents’ best finish of the evening on Friday at the 2013 PAC Swimming and Diving Championships with his second place finish in the 400 IM in a time of 4:12.70.  He also was part of the fourth place 200 medley relay that posted a time of 1:37.67. On Saturday, Dunigan finished fourth in the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.55.  He also was part of the fifth place 400 medley relay that posted a time of 3:35.07. He broke a school record that lasted for 11 years when he took seventh place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:10.94.
Washington & Jefferson sophomore Ben Mancini (Springfield) took fourth place in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:05.38.

Rochester senior Adam Bossert (Wissahickon) finished 12th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:08.96 at the University Athletic Association Championships at the University of Chicago on Saturday. On Friday, Bossert produced the only NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the men’s team, finishing 10th in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 57.60. He also was part of the 400 medley relay that finished fifth with a time of 3:25.12 and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships. Bossert holds school records in the 50, 100 and 200 breaststroke and the 200 freestyle relay. In the fall, he won the Lysle ‘Spike’ Garnish Award in honor of academic and athletic excellence.

Lycoming College sophomore TJ Guminski (Hatboro-Horsham) took sixth place in the 200-yard breaststroke at last weekend’s Middle Atlantic Conference Championships and earned second team all-league honors in that event.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Lebanon Valley’s Jan Ikeda (North Penn) won her fifth career medal and second silver of the meet in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:12.45 at last Sunday’s Middle Atlantic Conference Championship. Last Saturday, Ikeda captured second in the 100 fly with a time of 57.82.

West Chester’s Jess Healy (Hatboro-Horsham) finished seventh in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.32 at the 2013 PSAC Swimming Championships on Saturday. On Friday, Healy captured sixth place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.01.

Elizabethtown’s Rachel Engelhardt (Hatboro-Horsham) finished 13th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 57.03) at the MAC Championships last Sunday. It was a season-best time in the event for Engelhardt.

Shippensburg freshman Carolyn Meier (Upper Dublin) finished seventh in the 200 freestyle (1:54.77) at the 2013 PSAC Swimming Championships on Saturday. Meier’s 1:54.50 swim in the morning – a 1.5 second PR – allowed her to compete in the finals session. She also was part of the third place 800 free relay (7:37.28). On Friday, Meier was part of the 400 medley relay that finished fifth with a time of 3:54.35 to re-write the school’s record books, surpassing the previous record of 3:56.31 set in 2006. She also was part of the 200 free relay that finished third with a time of 1:35.90. On Thursday, Meier was part of the 400 free relay that set a school record in a time trial (3:28.77), surpassing the previous mark of 3:29.74 set in 1992.

TCNJ junior Maria Ciaralli (Pennsbury) was part of the 200 relay team that placed third at the 2013 Metropolitan Conference Championships on Saturday, registering a NCAA provisional time of 1:47.11. They topped their swiftest season time by more than two seconds in the race.

Ashley Kichline (Souderton) was part of Millersville’s 200 medley relay that finished eighth at the 2013 PSAC Championships. Their time of 1:48.84 topped the previous Millersville record of 1:49.34.  She also was part of the 400 medley relay that finished in seventh place with a time of 3:56.93, breaking their own best time and previous school record of 4:01.51 by nearly five full seconds. Amanda Thomas (William Tennent) was part of the 200 free relay that broke the school record of 1:38.43 with a time of 1:38.34. The foursome placed 10th in the event. Thomas was part of the 400 free relay that shattered the school record of 3:38.88 with a time of 3:34.26. The team captured ninth place. Thomas also recorded a 15th place finish in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in 1:57.12.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Junior Austin Jacoby (Pennridge) had 14 kills and four blocks in 12th-ranked Stevenson’s 3-1 win over Hunter on Saturday. In Saturday’s 3-0 loss to No. 6 Stevens, Jacoby had a team-high eight kills. Stevenson received its first ever AVCA Division III national ranking this week with its No. 12 ranking. In last Sunday’s 3-0 win over Cazenovia, freshman Ryan Chinnici (Pennridge) had a team-high eight kills and 10 service aces. Sophomore Scott Morantz (Neshaminy) had a career-high nine digs. In Stevenson’s 3-1 loss to No. 4 Juniata, Jacoby had a team-high 11 kills.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Middle hitter Lindsay Palm (Council Rock North) recently completed her senior season with Elizabethtown College by collecting her third straight All-Commonwealth Conference first team spot. Palm ranked fourth on the team in kills with 200 as the Blue Jays showed a 12-win improvement over their 2011 season. One of the team’s most effective offensive players, she ranked second in the conference in hitting percentage at .337. On the defensive side of the ball, Palm blocked 93 attacks to rank in the top five of league players. The CR North alum finished her career seventh on the program’s all-time kill list with 960 and fourth in hitting percentage (.303). She had 100 digs and 15 aces this season while playing in all 33 matches and a team-high 116 sets. Palm earned postseason honors all four years with the Blue Jays. She was the Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year and an all-conference second team selection following her freshman season. She went on to be named to the All-Commonwealth First Team in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Academically, she was a two-time member of the Middle Atlantic Conference’s Fall Academic Honor Roll.

WRESTLING
John Lindquist (Neshaminy)
earned a 7-2 decision at 157 In Shippensburg’s 26-9 loss to No. 4 Pittsburgh-Johnstown on Tuesday.

Sophomore Richard Jasinski (Pennridge) pushed his win total on the year to 31 with two wins on Saturday at 157. In Ursinus College’s 51-0 win over Washington & Lee, he earned a pin at the 4:58 mark. In Ursinus College’s 56-0 win over Muhlenberg, he earned a win by forfeit. Ursinus is ranked 23rd in Division III, and Jaskinski moved up to fifth in the 157 pound rankings this week. He has not lost since Dec. 29.

Matt Rappo (Council Rock South) won by pin at 141 in 17th-ranked Bloomsburg’s 30-7 win over Lock Haven on Friday.
