BOYS
ABINGTON 9, DOWNINGTOWN WEST 6
The Ghosts had an impressive debut under first-year coach Joseph Staerk.
“It’s a great opening day,” the first-year coach said. “Downingtown was ranked, but we are not scared of anybody.
“Our guys played their hearts out, and we had strong defense and goaltending. Our offense is picking up the system quickly. We had some trouble with groundballs, but I think we are going to be a team to contend with.”
Chris Goldsborough was credited with 12 saves in goal while Austin Pifani led the Ghosts’ defense. Defenders Gage Gormley and Christian Werner as well as long pole Pat McCormick and middies Matt Gormley and Gus Greenberg also made important contributions.
Offensively, Brian Gallagher led the way with three goals while Will Dulin, Joey Lomady and Hunter Jones each added a pair of goals.
NORTH PENN 10, PHOENIXVILLE 6
The Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the end of one quarter and led 4-1 at halftime. A four-goal third period made it an 8-2 game before the Phantoms scored four fourth-quarter goals.
Kyle Heinig and Matt Brady each had five-point days for the Knights as both contributed three goals and two assists. Alex Kopcho had two goals, and Scott Keffer, one goal and one assist. Chris Barr, who also had five saves in goal, added a single goal. Eder turned away six shots in goal.
SOUDERTON 10, NEW HOPE-SOLEBURY 4
The Indians received a six-point game from Cameron Trick, who finished the game with three goals and three assists. Ridge Schultz and Tyler Macdougall both had one goal and two assists while Collin Asbury added two goals and an assist. Also contributing scoring for the Indians were Drew Nice, Cory Anlouf and Colt Armstrong.
Quinn Sherer was credited with nine ground ball pickups to lead a standout defensive effort, and goalie Remi Reeves made 18 saves.
Souderton has won its season opener for the fifth straight year.
COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 17, CONWELL EGAN 1
Shane Magrann led the Golden Hawks with a seven-point day, which included three goals and four assists. Mike Pyrih had a team-high four goals to go along with two assists for six points. Corey Giampietro added two goals and two assists, and Kyle Walter had two goals and one assist.
Colin Patterson was dominant on face-offs, and the defensive unit of Devinny (goalie), Lesser, Seliskar and Moyer were credited with playing good defense and clearing the ball well.
GARNET VALLLEY 8, UPPER DUBLIN 5
Jack Deragon had 14 saves in a busy afternoon in goal for the Hatters. Defensively, Tyler Heubach and Henry Winebrake had standout performances in a physical nonleague game.
Michael Rama and Ben Winebrake each scored two goals, and Drew Potts added another. Michael Sowers led the Hatters with a pair of assists.
ARCHBISHOP WOOD 9, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 3
Ryan Kratzke had a hand in all three of West’s goals, scoring one and assisting on the other two. Ryan Green and Lucas Janos each added single goals for the Bucks. In goal, West’s Mike Harven turned away seven shots.
KENNETT 9, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 8
The Titans trailed 4-3 at the end of one quarter but scored four unanswered goals in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 7-4 lead. Kennett answered with a 4-0 third quarter to go on top 8-7. Both teams scored single goals in the fourth quarter.
Anthony Paone scored a pair of goals to lead the Titans.
PERKIOMEN VALLEY 14, PENNRIDGE 13
GIRLS
UPPER DUBLIN 11, ABINGTON 10
It was a classic battle between the neighboring rivals on Friday with the Flying Cardinals, who lost eight seniors to graduation, eking out the win.
Junior Taylor D’Ginto and sophomore Julie Cross both had big days offensively with D’Ginto contributing six goals and one assist. Cross had three goals and three assists. Rachel DiFrangia had one goal and one assist while Shelby Kenny added one goal. Anna Trentini contributed an assist.
Senior Meredith Cox led the Ghosts with six goals while Jeanne Van Buren added the hat trick, and Mickey Raymond had one goal.
The Flying Cardinals led 5-4 at halftime and – after a second half that saw both teams score six goals – still had a one-goal lead at the final whistle.
UPPER MERION 9, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 8
The Vikings opened their season with an impressive nonleague win over the Titans. Liz Botto led a balanced attack with the hat trick while Julia Reinert had two goals and two assists. Jackie Schauble added one goal and two assists, and Dominique Gambone had one goal and one assist. Lizzy Goernemann and Haley O’Mally each added single goals.
PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 10, NESHAMINY 9
The Colonials jumped out to a 6-3 lead and then held on for the win. Monica Dresnin led PW with three goals and two assists while Kayla Wisniewski had three goals and one assist. Morgan Nagy and Kirsten Monte both added a pair of goals.
UPPER MORELAND 20, LOWER MORELAND 3
Delaney Smith scored six goals to lead a balanced Golden Bear attack while teammates Ashley Duff and Maddie Mauro each added three goals and one assist. Maura O’Leary had a seven-point day, contributing two goals and five assists. Lily Sgro had two goals and three assists, and Veronica Baez had a pair of goals. Brooke Burman and Bridget Meade both added single goals to close out the scoring.
Upper Moreland goalie Kaitlin Taylor was credited with eight saves while her counterpart, MaryKate Nihill, had 12 saves.
