UPPER MORELAND 19, WILLIAM TENNENT 12
The Golden Bears survived the wind and cold to win Friday’s non-league slugfest against the Panthers. The six-inning game lasted close to three hours.
“The weather certainly affected both teams,” Upper Moreland coach Ernie Rehr said. “It was just cold, and the wind may have been a factor in some of the hits. It was a long day.”
Although non-league games are not taken into consideration for district seeding, they do serve a purpose.
“We’re really looking for pitchers to be consistently in the strike zone,” Rehr said. “We’re looking for the defense to make the routine plays, and offensively, we’re looking for exactly what we got today – patient at-bats, taking walks when needed and good solid at-bats even if they were outs, and they accomplished most of what we were looking to see.”
Kyle Irwin led the Golden Bears offensively with three doubles and three RBIs. Robert Knox had a triple and three RBIs. Eddie Decker was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. He also gave the Bears two solid innings on the mound, striking out four in that span.
Both teams scored two runs in the first inning, and the Golden Bears went on top 3-2 in the third and upped that lead to 4-2 after adding another run in the fourth. The Panthers plated five runs in the fourth to go on top 7-4, but the Golden Bears scored six in the fifth and nine more in the sixth for a 19-7 lead before Tennent scored four in the bottom of the sixth.
“We were certainly happy with the offense after the third inning,” Rehr said. “It really picked up, and that was nice to see.”
PENNRIDGE 11, UPPER PERKIOMEN 1 (6 innings)
The Rams exploded for eight runs in the second inning, erasing an early 1-0 deficit and seizing control of the game. They added two more runs in the fifth and a single run in the sixth to bring an early end to the game.
AJ Molettiere (two doubles), Mike Kacergis (double) and Dave Tatoian (home run) led the Rams offensively with two hits each.
Evan Myers earned the win on the mound, recording three strikeouts and walking one while facing just 12 batters in three innings of work. Jason Prasse, Eric Wesloski and Aaron Herndon each pitched one shutout inning for the Rams, who held an 11-4 advantage in hits over the Tribe.
ABINGTON 7, UPPER DUBLIN 1
Eric Tidwell was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored to lead the Ghosts’ attack. Eric Walther earned the win on the mound, allowing four hits and one unearned run. Sean Gallagher notched the save, tossing three shutout innings while not allowing a hit.
POTTSGROVE 9, PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 4
The Colonials were doomed by eight errors and six walks. Junior catcher Matt Nardo led PW’s offense with a pair of doubles, and senior second baseman Evan Beaty also had two hits.
DELAWARE COUNTY CHRISTIAN 14, UPPER MERION 0
Delco mound ace Kyle Warmhold allowed just two hits and struck out four. The visiting Knights benefitted from six errors, 10 walks and two hit batsman to plate 14 runs. Glenn and Camasso accounted for Upper Merion’s only hits.
