CHELTENHAM 6, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 3
It’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride for Matt Meyers this year. The Cheltenham senior signed a letter of intent to accept a baseball scholarship to East Stroudsburg and then underwent labrum surgery that will limit the first team all-league third baseman this season.
“We decided he’s not going to play the field, so he can prepare for college,” coach Frank Decembrino said. “He’s just going to hit for us.
“Today was his first full game back. He just got cleared to play. He’s way ahead of schedule, but it doesn’t make sense to put him in the field.”
Meyers responded by playing the role of hero, delivering a two-run home run in the fifth inning to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 Panther lead. Brett Bernstein, who had tripled, scored on the homer.
Decembrino credited the performance of pitcher Remy Wachsmuth, who allowed seven hits and three runs in six innings. Only two of the runs were earned.
“He was a reliever up until this season, and we gave him the ball for our first game, and he did a great job,” the Panthers coach said. “He hit his spots and had good control.
“They got hits, but he never was in a situation where he hurt himself. He did a good job.”
Bernstein (RBI), Meyers (2 RBIs, HR), Kevin Graham (RBI) and Max Perilstein (RBI, 2B) led the Panthers with two hits each. For the Bucks, Michael Marinelli was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs and John Fitz was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
“West is good,” Decembrino said. “They were beating us until that home run.
“They didn’t really miss. If we had a fastball go over the middle, they hit it pretty hard. We were fortunate – a lot of times they hit it at us.”
The Panthers added a pair of runs in the sixth inning for the 6-3 final.
“We played some small ball, and they made a mistake, and we were able to get an extra run in,” Decembrino said. “It was a good game.
“They played well. We just pretty much outhit them. That’s what it pretty much came down to.”
The Panthers are 1-0 on the young season while the Bucks are 1-1.
