Check out the SOL softball results for Thursday.
PENNSBURY 8, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 3
The Falcons needed a late game rally to earn a win in Thursday’s SOL opener against the visiting Indians. The Falcons led 2-0 after plating a pair of runs in the second, thanks to RBI singles by Christina Bascara and Suzanne Swanicke.
That lead went up in smoke in the top of the sixth when the Indians scored three runs. Hannah Mumber delivered an RBI double and Marketa Kruse collected a two-run single to highlight the rally.
The Falcons answered with six-run explosion of their own in the bottom of the inning. Highlights included a bases-loaded walk to Mackenzie Obert to knot the score. Swanicke delivered an RBI single, and by the time the inning was over, the Falcons – who benefitted from several walks and a costly error – led 8-3.
“We played a little sloppy in the one inning, but they hit the ball too,” Pennsbury coach Frank McSherry said. “Council Rock North is a good team. They have some good players. Dom (Pinto) leads the way.
“It was good for our kids because we played last night. It was a late game. We didn’t get home until after 10, and they had to be back at school at 8:15 (a.m.).”
Swanicke and senior Taylor Boltersdorf led the Falcons with two hits each.
Senior Val Buehler earned the win on the mound for the Falcons, who are 2-0 on the young season (1-0 SOL). The Indians fell to 0-2 (0-1 SOL).
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 6, BENSALEM 5
Bensalem took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning and was just one out from a 5-3 win when senior Caroline Schoeneweld brought the game to a dramatic end by delivering a three-run home run.
“Caroline hadn’t had a great day at the plate, and honestly, we didn’t play our best game,” East coach Erin Scott said. “Bensalem played a great game. They only had one error. They played really good defense, they capitalized.
“We left runners in scoring position. I said to them, ‘This is going to show what kind of team we are. In our games thus far, we have gotten up early and haven’t been in this type of pressure situation. Do we have the heart, and can we step up?’ I’m really proud of them.”
The Patriots took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, sparked by singles from Kerry Schulz, Carla Ruscio and Allie Chase (RBI) as well as an RBI groundout by Julia Schoenewald.
In the third inning, the Owls used RBI doubles by Jackie Morell and Lauren Morell to knot the score.
The two teams were deadlocked 2-2 heading into the sixth inning when the Owls plated three runs. Kelly Nolan and Meghan Nally both contributed RBI singles and Chelsea Briggs had an RBI groundout to put the Owls on top 5-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Brady Tillotson led off with a walk, and with two outs, Ruscio delivered an RBI double. Chase followed with a single, setting the stage for Caroline Schoenewald’s heroics.
“This shows what we’re really capable of doing,” Scott said. “You will have those off games. Today was one of those days. I give Bensalem a lot of credit. They were playing strong defense, and their pitcher was pitching really well.
“To be able to come back is really pretty amazing.”
Jayme Ziegler started and threw three innings for the Patriots. Freshman Kayla Ventura worked the final four to earn her first varsity win on the mound.
Ruscio (3-for-4) and Chase (2-for-4) led the Patriots offensively while Isabel Hansbury and Nally both were 2-for-4 to lead the Owls.
The Patriots are 3-0 while the Owls fell to 0-2.
PENNRIDGE 11, SOUTHERN LEHIGH 0 (5 innings)
The Rams have outscored their opponents 34-2 in their first three outings this season. In Thursday’s nonleague rout, Alison Horne was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a double, and Liv Campbell was 3-for-4 at the plate. Julia Helbling was 2-for-3 with an RBI in her first start at second base. Lisa Bahmueller, according to coach Paul Koehler, played strong defense while going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Emily Mayhew pitched the first two innings for Pennridge (3-0) and was relieved by Paige DeCew, who recorded 11 strikeouts in five impressive shutout innings.
SOUDERTON 15, GWYNEDD MERCY ACADEMY 0 (4 innings)
The Indians continued their torrid offensive production, pounding out 17 hits and scoring 15 runs in a contest that was halted in the fourth inning when the mercy rule went into effect. In three games this season, the Indians have scored 27 runs.
Nikki Canfield led the Indians’ hit parade with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate that included two home runs and five RBIs. Paige Shelly, Sarah Derstine (3-for-3), Dayna Shelly (3-for-3) and Morgan Yoder (2-for-2) all had perfect days at the plate. Dayna Shelly hit the first home run of her career. She also had a double and three RBIs. Derstine had a double and two RBIs, and Haley DeLany added an RBI as well.
On the mound, senior Salina Allebach tossed a four-inning no hitter for the Indians, who are 2-1 on the season.
Wednesday, March 27
PENNSBURY 12, ARCHBISHOP RYAN 1 (6 innings)
The Falcons were impressive in their 2013 debut on Wednesday night, exploding for 11 hits and 12 runs in the abbreviated six-inning contest.
“We really played well,” coach Frank McSherry said. “Our kids put on a show – they really did.
“It was freezing cold, and their pitcher is pretty good. She can bring it, but our kids crushed the ball.”
Senior Suzanne Swanicke had herself quite a day at the plate, contributing a pair of triples and four RBIs.
“Suzanne was unbelievable,” McSherry said. “She hit a long sacrifice fly – they don’t have a fence, and their centerfielder was playing her so deep, and she still caught it on the run going back. It would have been way out at our field. It was just a shot. She’s come out on fire. Hopefully, she will continue.”
Mackenzie Obert had a pair of hits, including a double. Jess Greenewald added a pair of hits, and Christina Bascara had two hits and scored three runs.
Val Buehler tossed a gem to earn the win, fanning eight and walking one.
“She pitched real well,” McSherry said. “She hit her spots.”
