Check out Thursday and Friday’s SOL softball results.
HATBORO-HORSHAM 12, QUAKERTOWN 0 (5 innings)
Carlie Johnson had a pair of doubles and four RBIs to lead a potent Hatter attack. Johnson’s three-run double in the first inning highlighted a five-run uprising by the Hatters, who seized early control of the contest.
Dee Moyer was 3-for-3 with three runs scored out of the two hole, and Daria Edwards was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Maria Spinosa was 2-for-3 with a double, and Heather Lutz had a pair of RBIs.
The Hatters are 10-3 in league play (13-3 overall), and only a victory over winless Central Bucks West on Monday separates Hatboro from capturing at least a share of the conference crown. Quakertown is 3-10 in the league (7-10 overall).
ABINGTON 8, UPPER DUBLIN 1
Darby Gormley had a big day at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored to lead the Ghosts. The junior utility player, who was splitting time at third base, played outfield on Friday.
“She’s an athlete,” coach Ellie White said. “She can play anywhere, and she just came up big. She’s been doing very well offensively for us. It was nice to have her step up.”
Jamie Gosselin was 4-for-4 with a double, and Raechel Holden was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Rachel Hyman and Ashleigh Sharp each had two hits to lead Upper Dublin.
The Ghosts plated two runs in the first, two more in the second and added single runs in each of the last four innings.
Lizzie Lloyd earned the win on the mound, allowing five hits while fanning six.
“I love playing Upper Dublin because it’s always a nice crowd,” said White, who coaches the Carpenter Cup team with UD coach Heather Boyer. “Upper Dublin is so close, and Heather is a good coach. This is a good win for us.”
The win was the third in four games for the Ghosts, who are 7-10 overall. The Flying Cardinals are 6-10.
SOUDERTON 9, CHRISTOPHER DOCK 2
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Indians answered with two in the bottom of the inning and pretty much owned the rest of the game. They added three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth before plating single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Erelle Sowers was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs, and Haley DeLany was 2-for-2 with a run scored to lead the Indians.
Salina Allebach earned the win on the mound, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three in four innings. Megan Roynan closed it out, giving up just one hit while fanning four in three innings.
The Indians are 9-8 overall on the season.
LANSDALE CATHOLIC 9, PENNRIDGE 2
The Rams managed just three hits in Friday’s upset at the hands of the Crusaders, who did most of their damage in a six-run sixth.
“(We) simply got outplayed by Lansdale Catholic this afternoon,” coach Paul Koehler said.
The Rams took a short-lived lead in the third inning after Emily Mayhew, who had doubled, scored on Haley Taylor’s single to right. That would be the extent of the Rams’ offense until the bottom of the seventh when senior captain Brooke Labs ripped a solo home run over the center field fence for the 9-2 final.
Paige DeCew absorbed the loss. Sophomore Liz Nace threw the final 1.2 innings.
Pennridge is 12-5 overall.
NORTH PENN 4, DOWNINGTOWN WEST 3
Thursday, May 9
NESHAMINY 9, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 7
The Redskins plated three runs in the first inning and three more in the third, and while it might have seemed as though that would have been more than enough for mound ace Lauren Quense and her Redskin teammates, it wasn’t.
The Indians – capitalizing on three walks, two ‘Skins errors and some timely hits, exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning. The big blow was a two-run home run by Dominique Pinto that put the Indians on top 7-6.
“To their credit, in that inning, they were really aggressive, and they hit some balls,” Neshaminy coach Dave Chichilitti said. “Four of their seven hits came in that inning where Lauren got a little wild.”
The Redskins responded with a three-run outburst of their own in the bottom of the fifth. The inning was highlighted by sophomore Sarah Snider-Leonhauser’s two-run home run. Selina Alicea delivered an RBI single to knock in an insurance run.
“It was nerveracking,” Chichilitti said. “We wanted to get this league win before we go into the championship game on Tuesday night.
“We knew Council Rock North had a bunch of girls that can hit the ball, and they hit the ball today. They had a really big inning, but we were able to answer with a big inning of our own.”
While the Indians fell to 4-9 in the league (7-10 overall), the Redskins are 13-0 in the league (16-1 overall). The Indians are 4-9 in the league (4-11 overall).
“There are other good teams in this league that have played both us and Pennsbury very well, and you hope they will earn a playoff spot for that,” Chichiletti said. “Scrappy teams like Council Rock North come out and they play these games like they’re playoff games, and we have to match their intensity. We have done it 13 times this year, and we have one more to go.”
The Redskins will face Pennsbury in a showdown of the conference’s top squads on Tuesday night.
