Chris Spadaro – University of Pittsburgh (Track & Field)
Major: Business
Final list of schools: Pitt, Temple, York
Reasons for choosing Pitt: “It came down to the coaching staff and the stability of the program. I liked how Pittsburgh had a good program, and they offered me a spot to jump, which is what I wanted. They gave me better opportunities than the other schools would, and that’s basically what it came down to.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in track and field at the collegiate level? “In the spring of last year, I went to outdoor nationals, and I competed well. I won a medal, and it kind of grew on me that I wanted to compete at the college level.”
Coach Len Spearing says: “I can’t tell you how impressed I am with Chris as an athlete and as a person. He’s a team leader, a motivator. You talk about having an extra coach on the field – he’s an extra coach at practice. He gets everybody going. I have had the opportunity to see him at the top when he medaled at states, and I also saw him last year when he was injured. He handled each of those situations with great class.
“Chris is a gifted and versatile athlete competing in events ranging from the triple jump to the 400 with equal success. Equally valuable to a team and a coach are his attitude and his leadership. Chris is passionate about what he does, and he hates to lose. Those two qualities are a combination that is difficult to defeat. Chris has an enthusiasm that is contagious. He motivates not only himself but the rest of the team to perform to the best of their ability. He genuinely cares about his teammates. His graduation will leave an absence that will be difficult to replace.”
