BASEBALL
Rider University junior Jerry Mulderig (Council Rock South) has signed a professional contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization and traveled to Bradenton, Fla., on Sunday. Mulderig was drafted in the 28th round by Pittsburgh in Major League Baseball’s 2013 First Year Player Draft. Mulderig was a first team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and a first team All-New Jersey selection this year as a designated hitter, but he was drafted as a pitcher. A member of the MAAC All-Academic team as a Behavioral Neuroscience major, Mulderig led Rider in batting (.328, 63 hits in 54 games), on-base percentage (.417), slugging percentage (.417) and walks (29), was second in stolen bases (16) and is third on the team in RBIs (31). On the mound, Mulderig appeared in 11 games this year, starting four, and owned a 3-2 record with a 4.12 earned run average. Opponents batted .229 against him. He struck out 13 batters in 19.2 innings pitched and walked seven. Mulderig did not pitch as a freshman at Rider and appeared in 10 games in 2012, all in relief, compiling a save and seven strikeouts in nine innings pitched.

La Salle women’s soccer goalkeeper and recent graduate Gabrielle Pakhtigian (North Penn) will be representing the Atlantic 10 as one of the league’s two nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. The A-10’s Council of Senior Woman Administrators chose two representatives from a pool of eight candidates to represent the Atlantic 10 as the league’s Woman of the Year nominees. One of the most prestigious NCAA awards, the NCAA established the Woman of the Year Award in 1991 to celebrate the achievements of women in intercollegiate athletics. The award is unique because it recognizes not only the athletic achievements but also their academic achievements, community service and leadership. The La Salle Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, Pakhtigian was a defensive stalwart for La Salle as its starting goalkeeper. She earned First Team All-Conference honors in leading the Explorers to their first ever A-10 title and second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Her volunteer experience encompasses weekly youth soccer sessions through Bux-Mont Torch FC, assisting in the St. Francis Inn Soup Kitchen and working to provide education to special needs persons. She served as a summer work camp team leader, organizing projects and Bible studies with teenagers. She sponsored an Armenian girl with World Vision. Pakhtigian also served as La Salle women’s soccer SAAC representative, she served on the Student Affairs Committee and was a member of her church’s Staff Parrish Relations Committee. Academically, she was selected as a Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-American, twice earning a spot on the A-10 All-Academic Team. She was also a member of the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society and a four-year member of the A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Neshaminy’s John Lindquist (Neshaminy) was named to the 2012-13 Division II All-Academic Wrestling Second Team as selected by the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association. It is the third consecutive selection to the All-Academic Wrestling Team for Lindquist. Lindquist, a mathematics major, posted a 12-11 combined record at 157, 165 and 174 pounds this season. Among his totals were three falls, three major decisions and a technical fall. Lindquist represented the Raiders at 157 pounds at both the 2012 PSAC Championships and the 2013 NCAA Division II Super Region I Championships. He went 1-2 at the conference championships and 2-2 at the regional championships. Lindquist also was named a 2012-13 PSAC Scholar-Athlete.
