Mary Kate Schwartz – Slippery Rock University (Lacrosse)

Major:  Education

Final list of colleges:  Slippery Rock, West Chester, Shippensburg

Reasons for choosing Slippery Rock:  “The campus is beautiful, and it’s so close to Erie, so there’s all of the hiking out there. Also, the team – it was just like a perfect (fit) when I went out there.”

What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate lacrosse?  “It was my sophomore year – it was the intensity of playing with the varsity team and the intensity of our summer league, and I got to play against all the Maryland teams and I got to really see what it was like to play at a higher level.”

Coach Dipi Bhaya says:  “Mary Kate is definitely one-of-a-kind. When I first came to East – even off the field, she was into it, she was responsible, she was reliable and dependable, and I never even saw her pick up a stick. To have those qualities and the same type of responsibility as our go-to person when we needed a goal, she was able to do it, and it’s so rare to find someone that well rounded both on the field and off the field who can handle that responsibility.
“She’s just a well-rounded player. She could go right, she could go left. She played under so many coaches, and then here’s someone like me coming in, and she soaked it up. I thought she really opened her heart up and welcomed it. It was refreshing to have an athlete with so much talent and potential just craving for someone to help her. I was looking for an athlete to try and help, so it was a win-win. She was just truly a competitor, she’s a natural leader on and off the field, she’s a respectful kid, and she’s someone I would recruit in college. When I was coaching Division One, she’s the kind of athlete I would recruit not only because of the athlete she is but because of the person she is.”
