NORRISTOWN 2, UPPER MORELAND 0
It was a day to celebrate for Norristown.
For the first time in the two-year tenure of Jared Elias as head coach, the Eagles earned a victory in SOL American competition Tuesday with a 2-0 downing of Upper Moreland.
“As long as we play like we’re capable of, I think that we can win a lot of games,” coach Jared Elias said. “I’m really happy for the kids.”
The Eagles struck first on a shot by sophomore Jose Palaez, who used an assist by senior Cristian Ochoa. Junior goalie Anthony Mitchell made that goal stand up, as did the Norristown defense headlined by senior back Anthony Giovinazzo.
“They had very few chances, but he controlled the back,” Elias said of Giovinazzo.
Mitchell, who is in his first year as a starter, both won the first varsity match of his career and notched his first shutout. Upper Moreland also conceded an own goal to add to the Eagles advantage. The Bears fell to 1-5 on the year with the home setback, while Norristown improved to 1-3.
“We have another game Wednesday that I think is winnable,” said Elias, referring to a match with Springfield (Montco).
“I’m excited to see how we do,” he continued “The sophomore class is pretty talented.”
PLYMOUTH-WHITEMARSH 1, WISSAHICKON 0
The Colonials came into the game with a chance at their biggest win yet, and they took full advantage.
The Colonials were already off to an impressive 3-0-1 start, but had yet to face a league opponent quite as strong as Wissahickon. By day’s end, though, P-W proved it was more than up to the challenge as it made a goal 15 minutes in stand up for a 1-0 home triumph over the Trojans.
Despite being out shot by a 17-13 margin, the Colonials were able to pitch a shut out behind their defense and the keeping of net minder Brett Paul, who made 11 saves. Taij Rosen provided the spark offensively, as he beat John Carrozza with a shot that proved to be the game winner.
Carrozza stopped 10 shots in the losing effort, which dropped the Trojans to 3-2 on the year (1-2 in the SOL American). P-W, meanwhile, is 3-0 in the league and will try to keep its success going Wednesday at Cheltenham.

UPPER MERION 1, SPRINGFIELD (MONTCO) 0 (OT)
Another team off to a great start to the year is Upper Merion. The squad has been virtually flawless so far, as the Vikings have yet to relinquish a goal in three previous matches. That streak remained intact, and then some, on Monday during the Vikings visit from Springfield (Montco). It took double overtime, but Upper Merion survived a challenge from the Spartans to improve to 4-0 overall.
After a scoreless first overtime session, Kevin Crowe wasted little time gaining an offensive chance in the second 10 minute frame. Just 45 seconds in, he found teammate Leonard Lamina, who put home the game winner for the Vikings.
The Spartans fell to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in SOL American action.

UPPER DUBLIN 2, CHELTENHAM 0
Cole D'Andrea put the Flying Cardinals on the scoreboard with a goal in the 40th minute, using an assist from Glenn VanOrden. Zach Arnold connected on an unassisted goal in the 64th minute to close out the scoring. Upper Dublin keeper Scott Wexler had four saves while his counterpart, Josiah Harmer, had five saves.
The Flying Cardinals are 3-0 in league play (3-2 overall) while the Panthers fell to 0-3 in the league (0-5 overall). Upper Dublin will host Upper Moreland on Wednesday, and Cheltenham will travel to Wissahickon.
National Conference
TRUMAN 1, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 0 (OT)
Truman is aiming for a better season in 2013, and by all accounts, the Tigers appear well on their way to making that happen.
Just three weeks into the campaign, the Tigers have already equaled their win total from last year and have additionally matched their SOL National victories. They met both marks Monday afternoon when an overtime goal gave them a thrilling 1-0 road victory over a Council Rock North squad that had been undefeated in league play heading into action.
“I thought overall, it was a very highly competitive game,” said first-year coach Bill O’Neil. “It was finally our best effort of the year.”
Starting keeper Eric Gutierez made 14 saves for the Tigers, who were out shot by a 20-6 count. Even so, Gutierez held strong in earning the shut out as did Truman’s back line that includes Matt Weed and Rashard Gayle.
The game remained scoreless through 40 minutes of regulation and over nine minutes of overtime. Just before the end of the first session, Truman earned a corner kick that was taken by Edgar Rodriguez. His attempt found Furken Celik, who sent a shot past the Indians keeper to seal the win.
Truman is now 2-2-1 on the year and next faces Abington Wednesday, while CR North dropped to 2-2 and hosts Pennsbury the same day.
“We played really well defensively,” said O’Neil. “This is hopefully the start.”

NESHAMINY 1, ABINGTON 0
A tough start to the season for the Ghosts continued Monday at Neshaminy. In a game generally controlled by the Redskins but lacking a goal, the Redskins had the last laugh. With five minutes to play, Kenny Herrmann sent a shot past Abington goalie Austin Brotman for the game winner, improving the home team to a perfect 5-0 start. They are 3-0 in SOL National action.
“Neshaminy owned a significant edge in time of possession, knocking it around trying to figure out a very organized Abington defense,” said Redskins coach Tom Foley. “Neshaminy finally broke through in the 75th minute when Pat Raykovitz threaded a perfect pass to Kenny Herrmann.”
Abington, which fell to 2-4 with the loss, was outshot, 16-5. The Ghosts have also lost two straight league matches and have scored just one goal in the process.

COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 2, PENNSBURY 2
After dropping a 1-0 decision to William Tennent last week, Pennsbury looked to rebound at home against CR South Monday night. The Falcons, though, had to settle for a 2-2 draw, moving them to 2-1-1 overall on the year (1-1-1 in the SOL National).
The Golden Hawks found their pair of tallies from Jeff Shuck and Jake Shefsky, while Sean Doyle earned an assist in the effort. CR South moved to 2-2-1 with the tie and is also 1-1-1 in league matches.
BENSALEM 1, WILLIAM TENNENT 0
Bensalem earned its first SOL National victory of the year with a 1-0 triumph at William Tennent Monday. The Owls used a goal from Eric Corey (Brian Kilcoyne assist) and also received a spark from goalie Chris Kilcoyne, who coach Joe Leone credited with turning in a strong performance. The Owls are now 3-2 on the year, while the Panthers are 2-3 (1-2 in the SOL National). Both teams play Wednesday, with Tennent trekking to Neshaminy and Bensalem heading to CR South.

QUAKERTOWN 1, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 0
A familiar face came to the rescue for Quakertown Monday night against CB South.
As the clock ticked toward overtime in a scrappy game, senior Connor Floyd sent a ball into the box that bounced around before teammate Kyle Woulfe gained control.
Woulfe had already shown a flare for heroics in the Panthers previous match as his goal in overtime claimed the Panthers a 4-3 victory over Pennridge on Friday. This time, Woulfe took advantage of Titans’ goalkeeper Matt Weigner being out of the box and beat him with a quick strike that proved to be the game winner with just 43 seconds remaining.
“It’s a great feeling right now,” Woulfe said.
The victory bumped the Panthers record to 4-3 on the year and 2-1 in the SOL Continental. The Titans, meanwhile, dropped to 2-4 with the loss.
While both teams had solid possessions at times, CB South had the best chance before Woulfe’s goal, which came on a hard shot and rebound midway through the second half. Goalie Matt Overholtzer, though, came through with two of his 12 saves on the night to keep the Titans off the board.
The Panthers sent several balls in deep throughout the action, including an early goal called back for being offside, but only mustered three shots on goal. Yet, it was enough to continue the team’s solid start to 2013.
“We want to continue to get better,” said Panthers coach Kevin Woulfe, who is also Kyle’s father. “These teams aren’t going to get any easier.”

NORTH PENN 1, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 0
One of the teams Quakertown will have to catch is North Penn, which may be a tall task given the Knights strong start. The teams will meet Wednesday afternoon, but on Monday, North Penn also took care of business. A goal from Abdul Mohammed gave the Knights a lead they would not relinquish in knocking off the visiting Patriots, 1-0.
North Penn is now 3-0 in Continental matches and 5-0 overall, while CB East dropped to 3-2 and 1-2 in league action. The Patriots next visit Souderton Wednesday.
CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 1, SOUDERTON 0
Own goals are never a good thing in soccer, especially when they prove to be the difference in a match. That was the case for Souderton Monday, as an Indian defender accidentally knocked a ball past his keeper in the 55th minute to give CB West a 1-0 lead. That tally was the only one scored, as the Bucks held on for a home win to continue their undefeated start in SOL Continental play.
“It was a close one tonight,” West coach Stefan Szygiel said. “Souderton played very well. We were a bit lucky to get the goal.”
West senior goalie Redd Brown also had a big day as he stopped five Souderton shots in earning his second shutout of the year. The Indians have now lost their first three league matches and are 1-3-1 overall.

PENNRIDGE 2, HATBORO-HORSHAM 1
The Rams entered their match with Hatboro-Horsham in need of a confidence booster, and they got it behind a good team effort across the board. With the score tied at one, Henry Savage beat the Hatters to a loose ball and buried a one-time shot in the 65th minute to help the Rams to a 2-1 home win.
“It’s a good bounce-back for us,” Rams coach Pete Valimont said.
Pennridge had not played since dropping Friday’s 4-3 heartbreaker to Quakertown, which was its first SOL Continental setback of the year. This win bumped the Rams’ league mark to 2-1 and their overall record to 5-2 heading into a home showdown with CB West Wednesday.
“Very disappointing and frustrating loss for us,” Valimont said of the Quakertown match.
Against Hatboro-Horsham, Kris Gross scored the Rams’ other goal on a shot set up by fellow senior and co-captain Justin Csaszar in the first half. Zach Jarrett also had a good day in net, notching five saves to get the win.
The Hatters, who played with 10 men for part of the game due to a goalie red card, next play CB South Wednesday and are 3-2 on the year.
