The Suburban One League will open its conference schedule this weekend as Pennridge (Continental), Plymouth Whitemarsh (American), and Pennsbury (National) will defend conference championships.
Pennridge and Quakertown - who will meet on Thanksgiving Morning at Poppy Yoder Field in a SOL Continental Conference finale – will not open conference play. The Rams travel to Academy Park and the Panthers host Pocono Mountain East in a fourth successive non-conference game.
The Game of the Week should be the battle of the unbeaten teams as Abington (3-0) travels on Newtown on Friday night to meet Council Rock North (3-0) in the National Conference opener for both teams. The remaining unbeaten teams in the non-conference portion of the schedule were Neshaminy (3-0), Pennridge (3-0), Quakertown (3-0), Upper Dublin (3-0), and Springfield (2-0).
However, as the SOL regular season begins this weekend each and every team is 0-0, and all 24 teams have that fantastic dream of becoming a champion.
And the beat goes on ...

Central Bucks West Bucks
Central Bucks West never led in its game with Wissahickon during the entire 48 minutes of playing time in regulation – but won the game.
CB West place kicker Mike Miller drilled a 37-yard field goal with no time left on the clock to present the Bucks with a breathtaking 31-28 victory over Wissahickon. Last year the CB West and the Trojans engaged in a 38-35 thrilling overtime win for Wissahickon.
“I told (Wissahickon head coach) Jeff Cappa that we could sell a lot of tickets if we play this type of game every year,” said Central Bucks West head coach Brian Hensel. “To win a game where you never actually take the lead until the final play of the game is a great combination of hard work and luck.
“We lost Marvin (Todd) early in the game, but John Fitz stepped up and did a tremendous job,” added Hensel of his senior quarterback. “We are very fortunate to have more than one weapon to use on offense.”
Next on the agenda for CB West is Souderton in the SOL Continental Conference opener for both teams on Friday night – at West.
“In the five years I have been the head coach at West, we have never beaten an Ed Gallagher team,” said Hensel in reference to the Souderton head coach. “This is my fifth year as head coach, and when I was an assistant I was never on a coaching staff that beat Souderton.
“We want to take the momentum we got in the Wissahickon win and have it carry over to the Souderton game,” added Hensel. “It is going to be a battle.”

Plymouth Whitemarsh Colonials
Plymouth Whitemarsh stunned the football prognosticators with a 36-34 victory over Downingtown West last week. The Colonials had staggered out of the gate with a 33-0 loss to Perkiomen Valley to open the season and followed with a 34-12 setback to Abington. Having been outscored 67-12 in its first two games, prospects for a win against a solid Whippet team did not seem to be a good bet.
“We picked up some momentum in the second half of the Abington game and carried it over,” said Plymouth Whitemarsh head coach Dan Chang. “We are starting to come together as an offensive line, and we have gained some experience in the backfield.
“We never lost confidence in ourselves, and we continue to grow as a team,” added Chang. “We are starting to feel good about ourselves.”
Plymouth Whitemarsh prepared the defense of its Suburban One League American Conference championship with a non-conference schedule that was extremely demanding.
“We played three very good programs, and we want to be able to challenge ourselves in the non-conference schedule,” said Chang. “Now we begin our conference schedule with Upper Moreland this week and we need to start taking care of business.”

Bensalem Owls
Bensalem just may have scheduled the most challenging of all non-conference teams. And the Owls have not fared well with losses to Philadelphia Catholic League powers Archbishop Wood (38-7) and Archbishop Ryan (53-0); and SOL Continental Conference defending champion Pennridge (37-6).
“It has been a real struggle,” said Bensalem head coach Kevin Kelly. “We have played excellent teams the last three weeks, and we haven’t played very well. That is a bad combination.
“We have not been a fundamentally sound football team so far,” added Kelly. “We understand what we have to do to improve. Regardless of the opponents, we know it is on us to get better. We have to work hard and get better quarter to quarter, game to game, and week to week.”
The schedule takes a turn for the better for the Owls this week. Bensalem opens the Suburban One League National Conference with a game against Council Rock South this Saturday afternoon in Newtown. The Golden Hawks are also 0-3 with setbacks to Central Bucks South (31-21), Father Judge (31-0), and Pennridge (49-20).
“We get the extra day to prepare, and that is a good thing for us right now,” said Kelly. “We just want to continue to get better,”
