MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington sophomore Alex Kane (Central Bucks East) earned a first team All-NEAC selection for the second consecutive year at Saturday’s North Eastern Athletic Conference Championships hosted by SUNYIT. He posted a time of 27:26 to capture third place, which is two spots better than at the SUNYIT Invitational four weeks ago. Nicholas Volpe (William Tennent) picked up second team All-NEAC honors as he finished 12th overall with a time of 29:23. The men’s team finished third with 72 points, earning not only its highest conference meet placement since the program started in 2010 but also having the most runners named to the NEAC All-Conference Team. The men’s squad placed sixth at the NEAC Championship last year.
Ursinus sophomore David Slade (Abington) posted a time of 31:04.80 at the 2013 Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday. Ursinus finished in ninth place as a team.
Penn State senior Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) was the second Nittany Lion across the finish line at the Big Ten championships in West Lafayette, Ind., on Sunday, finishing in 39th place with a time of 25:19.0. Connor Quinn (Hatboro-Horsham) finished in 58th place (25:32.4). The Nittany Lions finished ninth as a team.
Gwynedd Mercy freshman Matt French (Bensalem) rounded out the top five for the Griffins with a 16th-place showing at the CSAC Championships on Saturday, finishing the 8,000 meter course in 30:28. The Griffins repeated as CSAC champions, winning their sixth straight title.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington’s Cecilia Rosenbloom (Cheltenham) was the Nittany Lions’ number three finisher at Saturday’s North Eastern Athletic Conference Championships, placing 22nd overall in her first NEAC cross country race with a time of 23:18. Megan O’Farrell (Pennsbury) was the fourth Nittany Lion to finish, clocking a time of 23:49 for 27th in her final NEAC race. The women’s squad placed fifth overall.
Gwynedd Mercy freshman Hannah Geiger (Council Rock South) finished 10th overall at the Colonial States Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, earning second team all-conference honors. It was Geiger’s first time finishing as the Griffins’ number three runner, and her time of 21:23 was 29 seconds better than her effort over the same course on Sept. 21.
Temple’s Megan Schneider (Hatboro-Horsham) posted a time of 24:58.54 at the Owls’ first ever American Athletic Conference Women’s Cross Country Championships on Saturday while teammate Maria Papacostas (Cheltenham) posted a time of 26:08.52. The Owls placed eighth out of 10 teams.
La Salle’s Anne Areias (William Tennent) clocked a time of 17:53.0 en route to a 21st place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Va. La Salle finished third as a team.
Lock Haven’s Steph Dowd (Souderton) finished 40th with a time of 29:36.00 at the LHU Go Fast River Run meet. The Lady Eagles finished fifth as a team.
FIELD HOCKEY
Senior Alyssa Tourdot (Wissahickon) scored a goal in Albright’s 5-2 loss to Misericordia in Thursday’s season finale.
Jennalise Taylor (Pennsbury) had a goal and an assist in Quinnipiac’s 3-0 win at Siena on Sunday. With the win, Quinnipiac clinched a share of the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship. The Bobcats’ co-championship, which they will share with Rider, is the first for Quinnipiac athletics as a member of the MAAC since joining the conference this season. The Bobcats closed out the regular season with a record of 12-6 overall and a 5-1 record in MAAC play. It is the field hockey program’s first regular season championships since the Bobcats captured the 2002 Northeast Conference regular season title and the fourth regular season crown in Quinnipiac’s 16-year Division One history. Quinnipiac will be the No. 2 seed in the first MAAC Field Hockey Championship on Nov. 8-9 hosted by Rider. The Bobcats will play No. 3 Bryant on Nov. 8.
Bloomsburg’s Samantha Facciolla (Council Rock South) was chosen to compete in the 2013 Front Rush/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II North/South Senior Game. The event will be held Nov. 23 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. Facciolla, a midfielder, has five points on the season. She recorded a goal in wins against Kutztown and Mansfield. She is studying Early Childhood Education. Bloomsburg has locked up the fourth seed in the upcoming PSAC playoffs and will host a first round game.
Christina Maida (Central Bucks East) had a pair of saves in No. 9 Princeton’s 2-1 win over Rider Sunday.
Junior Amanda Krause (Council Rock North) turned aside six shots in The College of New Jersey’s 4-2 win over Johns Hopkins University on Friday. In Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Messiah, Krause made four saves to earn the win.
Senior Kierstan Ryan (Harry S Truman) scored the game winner in the second half of Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute’s 2-1 win over Oneonta State in the team’s season finale on Saturday afternoon. Ryan and her senior classmates were honored prior to the start of the game.
Junior back Maddy Harding (Central Bucks South) scored her team-leading eighth goal in Villanova’s 6-1 loss to No. 19 Delaware on Sunday afternoon. Harding leads the team in goals (eight) and points (19) for the year. In Saturday’s 1-0 win over Georgetown, Harding scored the game-winning goal 10 minutes into the game off a corner.
Senior Olivia Shoemaker (Souderton) upped her team-leading total goals to 14 with a goal in La Salle’s 7-2 loss to Richmond on Friday.
Gwynedd Mercy senior Maria Karidas (Council Rock South) was selected to play in the National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association (NFHCA) Division III Senior Game that will take place Nov. 23 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex in Virginia Beach, Va. She is one of 60 seniors invited amongst all Division III institutions that sponsor field hockey. Karidas is the only representative from the Colonial States Athletic Conference. So far this season, Karidas leads the CSAC in goals (20) and points (45) and is tied for first with four game-winning goals for the Griffins, who earned the #2 seed in the conference playoffs.
Karidas claimed CSAC Field Hockey Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 27. It is the second time she has received that honor this year. Karidas totaled four goals in two big CSAC wins last week to help nail down a playoff berth. She scored her seventh career hat trick in Tuesday's 4-3 overtime win over Neumann and added a tally in a 2-1 win over Marywood.
Karidas scored a goal in Gwynedd Mercy’s 3-0 win over Immaculata on Wednesday.
Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) scored the equalizer three minutes before the end of regulation to knot the contest 1-1 in Penn State’s 2-1 overtime loss to Friday. Despite the loss, the Lions have claimed their seventh Big Ten title and remain the top seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
Tabatha Almond (Souderton) and Colleen McCabe (William Tennent) both scored second half goals in Lock Haven’s 7-0 win over Saint Louis. It was Almond’s first career goal. The shutout was the 10th of the season for LHU.
Alayna Brown (Souderton) scored her eighth goal of the season in No. 5 West Chester’s 3-2 win at Slippery Rock on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 9-0 win over No. 10 Mercyhurst, Brown contributed a goal and assist. The Golden Rams, who finished in third place, will face East Stroudsburg in a PSAC Tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday.
Marissa Glatt (Central Bucks East) finished her freshman season at Lehigh with 12 goals and one assist and was the leading scorer on the team. Gabby Tofig (Council Rock North) closed out her freshman season with four goals and led the team with three assists.
FOOTBALL
Ursinus sophomore kicker Eric Boyer (Upper Dublin) was named the Centennial Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 27. Boyer had a perfect night in Ursinus College’s 30-10 win over Susquehanna, converting all three field goals and all three PATs. His three-pointers covered 33, 28 and 22 yards.
Boyer had a 36-yard field goal in Ursinus College’s 24-18 loss to Johns Hopkins on Saturday.
Alex DiNolfi (Norristown) had eight tackles in Kutztown’s 45-9 win over Millersville on Saturday.
Sean Baner (William Tennent) connected on a 20-yard field goal to give Delaware a 10-7 lead in its 32-21 come-from-behind upset of seventh-ranked Towson on Saturday.
Sheldon Mayer (Norristown) had a career night in Shippensburg’s 34-18 upset of previously undefeated and No. 5-ranked Bloomsburg in a nationally televised PSAC East game on Thursday night. The Norristown alum had 244 receiving yards, the second most in a single game in school history. He hauled in six passes (a 40.1-yard average) with touchdown receptions of 84 and 75 yards. He finished the game with 265 all-purpose yards, the most for a Raider this season. Senior defensive end Jake Metz (Souderton) contributed a sack.
Dave Damirgian (Council Rock South) led the defense with 11 tackles in Monmouth University’s 24-21 loss to Sacred Heart on Saturday.
Junior Craig Needhammer (North Penn) had 24 carries for 63 yards and a touchdown and three catches for 35 yards and a touchdown in Lycoming’s 28-24 loss to King’s College on Saturday afternoon. Teammate John Sibel (Pennsbury) caught seven passes for 53 yards.
Steve Sroba (Council Rock North), a sophomore fullback at Carnegie Mellon University, made his first college start recently in the Tartans' game against Division One opponent Mercer University in Atlanta. He also scored his first touchdown as a fullback in the second quarter. Sroba has een action in six games this season for the Tartans.
MEN’S SOCCER
Freshman midfielder Jamie Bonner (North Penn) contributed two goals and an assist to lead Eastern University to a 5-0 win over Penn State Abington on Monday. The goals were the first two of his collegiate career. Eastern moved up to No. 4 in the latest NCAA regional rankings in the latest poll.
Freshman forward Ryan Molyneaux (Souderton) scored a goal in Ursinus College’s 4-1 win over Gettysburg on Saturday.
Nick Becker (Council Rock North) was credited with his third assist of the year in La Salle’s 1-1 double overtime tie last Sunday.
Sophomore keeper Meghan Kaminski (Central Bucks South) notched her third shutout of the season in No. 22 Penn State’s 3-0 win over Michigan State in the regular season finale on Friday, turning away the Spartans’ only shot on goal.
Reggie Slaton (Bensalem) had a team-high 12 stops in Millersville’s 45-9 loss to Kutztown on Saturday.
Fran Miller (Central Bucks East) scored the lone goal of the game in Bloomsburg’s 1-0 win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday. Matt Zina (Council Rock North) was credited with the assist. Miller, Anthony Manero (Council Rock North), and Matt Cannon (Council Rock North) were recognized prior to the game as part of the Senior Night celebration. In Bloomsburg’s 2-1 road win over Shepherd University on Tuesday, Mike Bamford (Central Bucks West) scored two goals.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
York College senior defender Dale Mason (Neshaminy) was named the Capital Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 27. Mason led the Spartans to a 1-0 shutout win over Southern Virginia in the team’s only game of the week. She led a Spartan defense that limited the Knights to just three total shots with only one of those being on goal. The shutout was the Spartans’ eighth of the season and is the 31st clean sheet of Mason’s career.
Freshman Grace Miorelli (Souderton) scored her 10th goal of the season in top-seeded Cedarville’s 3-0 win over eighth-seeded Ohio Valley in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference quarterfinal game on Saturday.
Alexis Haug (Central Bucks West) scored her third goal in two matches in Ursinus College’s 2-1 win over Eastern on Wednesday night.
Carly Yost (North Penn) scored the only goal of the game in the 82nd minute to lead West Chester to a 1-0 PSAC victory over Edinboro on Saturday. Haley Magiaruga (North Penn) contributed the assist.
Sophomore Megan Kelley (North Penn) scored in the 77th minute in Millersville’s 2-1 loss to California (Pa.) on Saturday. She shares the team lead in goals with four.
Freshman Marykate Bateman (Hatboro-Horsham) scored a goal in La Salle’s 5-0 shutout of George Mason on Sunday. In last Sunday’s 3-0 win over Duquesne, Bateman scored her second goal of the season, heading a pass from teammate Jessika Kagan into the net to send La Salle into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Elizabethtown sophomore Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) was named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 27. It is the first time this season she received this honor and second time in her career. The Neshaminy alum scored five points in leading the Blue Jays to pivotal league wins over Stevenson and Lebanon Valley. She extended her point-scoring streak to four games with points in both games. She scored twice in Elizabethtown’s 4-3 win over Stevenson, including a goal that tied the game 3-3 in the 69th minute. In Elizabethtown’s 2-1 overtime victory at Lebanon Valley, Cerankowski, a second-year midfielder, set up teammate Lauren Berry’s early goal that gave Elizabethtown a 1-0 lead at the time. Through Oct. 27, Cerankowski had 18 points on the season with 11 of those (four goals, three assists) coming during her current scoring streak. She is tied for the team lead in assists with six, ranks second in points and game-winning goals (two) and is third in both shots (31) and shots on goal (16).
Cerankowski scored a pair of goals, her seventh and eighth of the season, in Elizabethtown’s 8-0 win at Lycoming on Tuesday.
Penn State Abington freshman midfielder Molly Wyman (Abington) was named to the All-North Eastern Athletic Conference second team. The Abington grad scored six goals and added four assists in her debut campaign with the NIttany Lions.
Penn State Abington freshman midfielder Kayla Nolan (Abington) received All-NEAC third team honors. Nolan netted six goals and three assists.
Penn State Abington freshman midfielder Ashlee Kohn (Bensalem) was named to the All-NEAC third team. Kohn had four goals and two assists to help the Nittany Lions’ attack. Penn State Abington finished its regular season 13-2-1 overall. The Nittany Lions were 10-1-0 in NEAC play, good enough for a second place finish in the regular season standings and an automatic spot in the NEAC Championship tournament.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Senior Katie Kennedy (Wissahickon) and Nicole Broccolino earned an 8-6 win at number one doubles in Cabrini’s 5-1 loss to Marywood University in Saturday’s Colonial States Athletic Conference semifinal round. The duo was 13-2 on the season. The match marked the end of Kennedy’s successful collegiate career. Kennedy and fellow senior Victoria Nastala combined for 166 total victories in singles and doubles and led the Cavaliers to three CSAC postseason tournaments, including the 2010 and 2011 CSAC championship matches.
Kennedy and Broccolino earned second team all-Colonial States Athletic Conference honors in doubles. They were 9-1 in conference play and opened the season with eight consecutive victories. Kennedy also earned all-CSAC honorable mention recognition in singles as well. It is her fourth all-conference honors. This season she recorded a 9-3 mark to take her career win total to 45. The senior opened the season with six consecutive wins en route to an 8-2 conference record.
Gwynedd Mercy senior Rachel Fein (Wissahickon) was selected the Colonial States Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year for the fourth straight season. The Wissahickon grad capped off a 10-0 mark in CSAC play at number one singles, going 40-0 over her four seasons. Fein, whose other major honor was the CSAC Rookie of the Year as a freshman and has over 75 wins at singles, currently stands at 17-3 overall this season at number one singles and a 13-4 mark with teammate Gabrielle Muller at number one doubles. Fein and Muller received first team all-conference honors in doubles.
Fein was selected to the CSAC Women’s Tennis Honor Roll for the week ending Sept. 27 as she capped off an undefeated 10-0 season at singles and doubles as well as an unblemished mark in her conference career in singles (40-0) with wins over Rosemont and Keystone. In the process, her wins helped the Griffins secure the top seed in the CSAC Tournament for the sixth year in a row.
Gwynedd Mercy junior Taylor Michener (Central Bucks South) also earned a spot on the first team at singles. She is now 12-5 and 7-0 in league play.
Gwynedd Mercy sophomore Jenna Caffarello (North Penn) received All-CSAC second team honors at singles and doubles. Caffarello and Kellie Booth are 16-3 overall and 9-1 in CSAC in doubles with their 16 wins tops on the team.
Gwynedd Mercy captured the 2013 Colonial States Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Team Championship for the fifth time in program history. Fein earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at first singles and was part of the first doubles team that notched an 8-3 win. Michener and Kristen Kriebel (Pennridge) earned a 9-8 (7-5) win at second doubles. Caffarello was a 7-5, 8-7 (7-5) winner at number six singles. She also was part of the third doubles team that earned a 9-7 win.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Freshman defensive specialist Casey Griffith (Upper Merion) contributed 20 digs in UMBC’s 3-1 win over Binghamton on Friday.
Junior Devyn Ingram (Upper Merion) had seven digs to lead Holy Family’s defense in its 3-0 win over Bloomfield on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore setter Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) recorded her sixth 40-plus assist effort of the season with 40 helpers in Cabrini’s 3-0 win over Elizabethtown. In Cabrini’s 3-1 win over Shenandoah University, Koenig had 47 assists. In Wednesday’s 3-0 win at Keystone College, Koenig tallied 30 assists while fellow senior Kristy Riley (Hatboro-Horsham) posted a team-high nine digs.
Cairn University’s Abby Keating (Neshaminy) received honorable mention on the All-East Region team for the National Christian College Athletic Association. Keating provided an all-purpose role on the squad in 2013.
Keating had eight kills in Cairn Universitiy’s 3-1 win over Keystone College on Saturday. With the win, the Highlanders improved to 10-1 within the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Ten wins is a new high mark for Cairn in the CSAC.
Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) paced the offense with 17 kills and a .519 hitting percentage in Franklin & Marshall’s 3-1 loss to Salisbury in a tri-match on Saturday. The junior middle hitter committed only three errors in 27 total attacks. She also had a team high seven blocks. In F&M’s 3-1 win over York later in the day, Harvey led the team with 12 kills and eight blocks. In Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Muhlenberg, Harvey had 18 kills and a .412 hitting percentage.
Freshman Stephanie Elechko (North Penn) had six kills in Eastern University’s 3-0 win at Moravian College on Friday night. Eastern, No. 18 nationally, closed out the 2013 regular season with a 27-4 record. On Wednesday, Eastern will host Misericordia in the Freedom Conference semifinals.
Sarah Godfrey (William Tennent) was second on the team with nine kills in Lebanon Valley’s 3-1 loss to Gallaudet University on Saturday. The second-seeded Dutchmen will host third-seeded Messiah on Wednesday in the Commonwealth Conference semifinals.
Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) combined with teammate Sage Esposito to scoop up 17 digs in UConn’s 3-0 loss to SMU on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Michelle Carrieri (Central Bucks South) had five kills, 10 digs and four aces in Gwynedd Mercy’s 3-0 loss to Immaculata on Wednesday.
Middle blocker Brittany O’Hara (Pennridge) recorded three kills, three blocks and a dig in Moravian College’s 3-0 loss to No. 18 Eastern University on Friday.
Sophomore defensive specialist Deanna Bianchini (Wissahickon) had 11 digs in Chestnut Hill’s 3-0 loss to Wilmington University on Tuesday.
Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) had 10 kills on 15 total attacks while only committing one error for an attack percentage of .600, her third highest on the year, in Kutztown’s 3-0 win over Lock Haven on Saturday. It is the first time KU has ever defeated Lock Haven in Lock Haven and pushed Kutztown into fifth place in the PSAC East Division.
