Angela Virtu – American University (Field Hockey)
Major: Business
Final list of colleges: American, University of Michigan, Iowa
Reasons for choosing American: “Just the whole family feel when you do down there. The team instantly welcomes you, and it’s just an amazing home-like feeling.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate field hockey? “I think it was in eighth or ninth grade when I started thinking about it. I played a lot of different tournaments at a lot of different colleges. My club coaches were like, ‘You can look into this as something to do.’ I always played field hockey, and I knew I wanted to continue in college.”
Coach Lucy Gil says: “Angela was a four-year starter. I wasn’t here for her sophomore year, but as a freshman, she started every single game and was probably the only player who never, ever came out of the game. She’s so steady and so good at what she does. Her junior and year – it was the same thing. I know it’s cliché, but she was the consummate worker. She works until she gets it right. She’s very good at what she does.
“As a hockey player, her ball skills and her ability to manage the ball on the field are very good. Her vision of the field for passing is very, very good, and her defensive skills are unparalleled. She probably the best defender I have ever had. She can stop anything. She’s just quick with the stick and understands what the offensive player wants to do and can anticipate and be there. I would take a few more of her on my team.”
