Upper Moreland senior Sydney Szopo won gold at the PIAA Class AA championships Saturday.
Upper Moreland painted the pool purple and gold at Saturday’s finale of the PIAA Class AA swimming and diving championships, held at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.
Sydney Szopo started things off for the Golden Bears with her victory in diving.
Szopo, a senior, led from start to finish and posted a score of 427.45 points.
“I was confident but you’re never sure how it’s going to turn out so I’m really excited I did this,” said Szopo, who was third in this event last year. “It’s a great way to end my high school career.”
Szopo was one of three Upper Moreland divers in the girls field. District One only has two automatic berths for states, which were won by Szopo, the district champion and teammate Shannon Chambers, the runner-up.
Upper Moreland freshman Colleen Rodrigues finished third at the district meet for the alternate position. She was invited to the meet when a diver in another district scratched.
“I was really excited when they told me,” Rodrigues said. “I was hoping to come to states and I’m really happy I got this opportunity.”
Rodrigues did not make it to the semifinals, finishing 26th(125.25).
“I tried my hardest,” she said. “It was a great experience and I’m really glad to be here, especially as a freshman. This was a good experience for me. Now I know what it’s like here and I have three more years.
“It was great to be here with Sydney and Shannon. They’re great divers and I really look up to them.”
Chambers made it as far as the semifinals last year but got to the finals this year, finishing 13th (327.85).
“I did a lot better than last year so I’m excited about that,” said Chambers, a junior. “I’m already really excited about next year.
“Because I was here last year I knew what was going on so I wasn’t as nervous and that was a big help.
“It was so much fun to be here with a big group. Shannon and Sydney and I dive together every day and it was great to be together at the end.”
Amber Saint Clair also made the podium for the Upper Moreland girls, taking seventh in the 100 backstroke (58.51).
For the boys, junior Iain Smith led the charge with a silver medal in the 100 breaststroke (58:32).
“I’m happy with how I swam,” he said. “I can’t complain except that I was hoping to do better. I always want to do better.
“I’m happy I broke the record again by a couple of hundredths and I got second so that’s a lot.”
Smith also anchored the 400 freestyle relay, which finished13th (3:21.88) for Kane Nelson, Jake Winter and Mike Freeman.
On Friday the Golden Bears picked up an eighth place medal in the 200 freestyle relay.
Smith, Alex Perkins, Freeman and Nelson were the foursome. Their time was 1:31.40.
The Upper Moreland boys team finished 13th in team scoring with 49 points while the girls were 17th (36).
Springfield also has some good swims.
Tyler Chamberlin took seventh in the 100 breaststroke(1:01.01).
“I had high hopes of a medal but I didn’t want to underestimate the competition,” said Chamberlin, a junior. “Everyone here is the best in the state so I didn’t want to go in cocky. I just swam my race and hoped for the best.
“It was great competition and I really enjoyed it. I was on top of the world when I got into the medal heat.
“This has really made me excited for next year. Everyone here was a great competitor and I’m looking forward to hopefully coming back.”
Danny Giampietro was ninth in the 500 freestyle (4:44.98) and 11th in the 200 freestyle (1:45.36) for the Spartans.
Tim Resch, Ben Wiley, Chamberlin and Giampietro were 14th in the 200 freestyle relay (1:31.86) and Jake Corcoran, Brennan Garber, Wiley and Resch took 16th in the 200 medley relay (1:46.01).
The Springfield boys team finished 21st in team scoring with 35 points.
For the girls, Rachel Munger took sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.49) and 10th in the 200 individual medley (2:10.45) and Jules Marble was 13th in the 50 freestyle (24.68).
The 200 medley relay of Marble, Munger, Devyn Ford and Lizzie Nadolski claimed the sixth place medal (1:49.66).
