John Roos – George Mason University (Soccer)
Major: Business
Final list of colleges: George Mason, Manhattan, Siena.
Reasons for choosing George Mason: “I really liked it for its size and the academics. For both, it was the best fit for me. I really loved it there. Their team is always good, and they do well in the A-10.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate soccer? “It never was a question that I didn’t want to do it. I always wanted to play in college. At the beginning of my junior year, I kind of knew it was a possibility. I started getting e-mails, and I knew it was what I wanted to do. I was on the right (club) team for it. (Penn Fusion) was number one in the country my junior year.”
Coach Rick Schmidt says: “John is a great player. He’s very driven. He’s a purist. You have a lot of kids play a lot of different sports, and John is a through and through soccer player. That shows in every aspect of his game on and off the field. He’s a very versatile player. When he was younger, he played up top as a forward. Because of the reworking you have to do every year, we actually needed him in defense more than we did in offense. John came back on defense and helped anchor our defense because we pretty much had to start from scratch with that this year.”
