BASEBALL
Delaware Valley College freshman outfielder Kyle Wenger (Souderton) has been named to the 2014 D3baseball.com All-Mid-Atlantic Region First team. Wenger, who was named the Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year and a first team all-conference honoree, was one of just two freshmen in the region selected to the first team. He will now be on the D3baseball.com All-American ballot. Wenger also was named to the 2014 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic All-Region first team. Wenger started all 36 games in center field and is ranked in the top 20 in all of Division III in batting (third - .479), on-base (sixth - .551) and slugging (17th - .744). He also led the team in hits (56), RBIs (33), stolen bases (18), doubles (13) and triples (3). Wenger’s four home runs tied him for team high honors while his 32 runs scored tied him for second on the squad. Wenger picked up at least one hit in 33 of the 36 games, including 22 of the last 23 contests. He recorded 17 multiple-hit games, 10 multiple-RBI games and nine multiple-run games. Wenger also committed just one error in 89 chances for a .989 fielding percentage.

Delaware Valley College senior shortstop Pete O’Hara (Council Rock North) was named to the 2014 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic All-Region second team. The CR North grad finished second all-time in school history in hits (200), runs scored (154) and stolen bases (78). He moved from the outfield to the infield this year and batted .387 with nine doubles, two triples, four home runs, 41 runs scored and 26 RBIs.

Susquehanna sophomore second baseman Dylan Glassmire (Central Bucks South) earned 2014 Landmark All-Conference second team honors. The CB South grad started 39 games and recorded 42 hits, 28 runs, 27 RBIs, six doubles and one home run while batting .286 in the three spot. He drew 13 walks, stole nine bases and had a .981 fielding percentage at second base.

Billy Fleming (Council Rock South) had an RBI in No. 6 seed West Virginia’s 9-4 loss to No. 7 Baylor in an elimination game of the Big 12 Championship on Friday. He also had an RBI in West Virginia’s 6-2 loss to No. 2 seed TCU in the second game of the Big 12 Championships.

Gwynedd Mercy senior John Burns (Neshaminy) was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Mid-Atlantic All Region first team. He also was named first team all region by D3baseball.com. Burns batted .364 in 33 games and added 27 runs scored, 24 RBIs, nine doubles, three triples and two home runs with a team high .617 slugging percentage.

Moravian College junior right fielder Matt Hanson (Central Bucks West) has been named the 2014 D3baseball.com Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Year and also earned a spot on the All-Mid-Atlantic First team. The CB West grad also was selected to the 2014 D3baseball.com All-America second team and was named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-American third team. Hanson, who also was the 2014 Landmark Player of the Year and an All-Conference first team honoree, hit .408 this season (sixth in school history) while starting 43 games in right field. His 62 hits were tied for the team lead and also tied for second in a single season in the Moravian record books. Hanson, who was named to the ABCA All-Region Third Team a year ago, scored 53 runs this spring, just one shy of the school record. His 48 RBIs are the third most in a single season. He also led the team with three home runs this spring, and Hanson added 10 doubles and four triples for 89 total bases, the fifth most in a season. He had a .586 slugging percentage, which is eighth in the record books. Hanson drew 25 walks and was hit by a pitch 13 times, one shy of the single season mark, for a .518 on-base percentage, second in the record books. He also stole 13 bases. In the outfield, Hanson had 72 putouts and three assists in 77 chances. “Matt is a great young man that works hard all year to make our team the best it can be,” coach Paul Engelhardt said. “He demonstrated all year that his ability was there for every game, and his results prove it. He is a rare player in that he possesses great hands to hit for average but can drive the ball gap to gap and put some over the fence. His speed is a difference maker and helps our team by being able to steal and take extra bases. This honor is well deserved for Matt, and I know he will work even harder to have a better year next year for his team and teammates.”

Kutztown junior outfielder Brandon Martinez (North Penn) was named to the second team of the 2014 Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Atlantic Region. The North Penn grad is a two-time all-region player. He also was named to the All-PSAC East first team in 2014 for the second time in his career. He batted a career high .392 this season for fifth in the PSAC. He also was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District 2 First Team and is on the ballot for the All-America team. Martinez’s 2014 season was highlighted by breaking KU’s 31-year stolen base record of 30 swiped bags in a season. He was 35-for-36 on stolen base attempts this season, the highest stolen base percentage in the PSAC among players with 20 or more. He also held a perfect fielding percentage and a career high 102 putouts this season.

and Terrence Snetter (Bensalem) were named to the Penn State Abington Spring 2014 Director’s List. This recognition is given for completing the spring semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

was named to the Penn State Abington Spring 2014 Director’s List. This recognition is given for completing the spring semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) and Nicholas Volpe (William Tennent) were named to the Penn State Abington Spring 2014 Director’s List. This recognition is given for completing the spring semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

MEN’S GOLF
Nick Dunn (North Penn)
has been named head golf coach at Carnegie Mellon University. He will replace 29-year veteran Rich Erdelyi, who announced his retirement in the fall. Dunn will also serve as the assistant women’s golf coach, which will play on the varsity level starting in the fall of 2014. He will officially start his duties at the beginning of the fall season. “We are thrilled to welcome Nick to Carnegie Mellon as the next leader of our men’s golf program,” Director of Athletics Josh Centor said. “He is an outstanding teacher of the game and will continue the tradition of excellence that Coach Erdelyi has established over the last three decades.” Dunn has been an assistant golf professional at the Longue Vue Club in Verona, Pa., since 2009. He has also worked at the Ace Club in Lafayette Hills and Pine Crest Country Club. Over the course of his career, Dunn has been a teacher, administrator and golf instructor. He has developed expertise in course management, club fittings and supervising tournaments through his role at Longue Vue, which has been the home of Carnegie Mellon golf for years. “It is exciting to become part of Carnegie Mellon University,” Dunn said. “The student-athletes of this prestigious university are held to the highest academic expectations, and I am looking forward to assisting and aiding them with their athletic goals. Coach Erdelyi has developed an excellent men’s golf program, and I hope to continue to build upon his achievements. I consider it a privilege and an honor to be a part of the Carnegie Mellon athletics team.” A 2011 graduate of California University of Pennsylvania, Dunn received a Bachelor of Science degree in sports management, specializing in professional golf management. He also earned a minor in business administration. Dunn is in the process of becoming a Class A PGA Professional.

Kevin O’Connor (Neshaminy) was named to the Penn State Abington Spring 2014 Director’s List. This recognition is given for completing the spring semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Cal-Berkeley midfielder Nicole Beck (Hatboro-Horsham) was named to the 2014 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic team. To receive the honor, the student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better, must be at least a sophomore academically, must have completed one full academic year at the institution prior to the season and must have competed in 50 percent or more of the institution’s competition.

Senior Amy Cross (Upper Dublin) contributed two goals and an assist to go along with one ground ball and one draw control in No. 2 Syracuse’s 16-8 win over Virginia in the semifinals of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championships on Friday. Kelly Cross (Upper Dublin) had two ground balls, two draw controls and one caused turnover. The win vaulted the Orange into Sunday’s national title game against top-ranked Maryland.

Veronica Hilferty (Central Bucks South) and Kate Schalck (William Tennent) were named to the Penn State Abington Spring 2014 Director’s List. This recognition is given for completing the spring semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Penn State senior defender Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) received IWLCA All-American second team honors. The ALC Defensive Player of the Year, Purvis helped anchor the Nittany Lion defense with a conference-leading 1.61 caused turnovers per game. The defensive stalwart secured 29 caused turnovers, 27 ground balls and eight draw controls. An All-ALC First Team selection, Purvis earned at least three caused turnovers in five games this season, including a career high five in a 21-8 win against Drexel.

Lock Haven senior Lindsay Walbrandt (Souderton) has been selected to play in the 2014 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA)/DeBeer Division II North/South Senior All-Star game. She will represent Lock Haven on the South Team on June 7 at Cabrini College in Philadelphia. Walbrandt, who played a key role in Lock Haven’s run to the national title game, earned All-American, All-Region and All-Conference honors this season. She finished with 30 ground balls, 29 draw controls, 16 caused turnovers and 13 goals.

Trinity College senior Elizabeth Heimann (Cheltenham) closed out her collegiate career in the NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse Championship game for the third time. While Trinity lost the game and finished as the national runner-up, it completed a successful four years for the Trinity team. During Heimann’s four years, the Bantams were national champions once and national runners-up twice. They were four-time champions of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) with a combined record of 80-6. Heimann, who scored six goals and was credited with two assists during her senior season, was a three-time NESCAC All-Academic honoree, recognition given to varsity letter winners with a cumulate grade point average of at least 3.35 or equivalent on a 4.0 scale. She also represented the lacrosse team on the NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team her senior year. Heimann was the recipient of the school’s Ferguson Prizes in Government, given to the two students with the best essays submitted for any undergraduate course, tutorial or seminar in the Department of Political Science. She also was the recipient of the Esther and Lloyd Cooper Prize in Fine Arts, which is awarded to the junior or senior of whatever major who demonstrates distinction in any branch of the history or practice of the fine arts.

MEN’S SOCCER
Julian Antal (Council Rock South), Daniel Gonzalez (Pennsbury), Matthew Klingerman (Neshaminy), Daniel Saint-Pol (Pennridge), Bryan Werner (Central Bucks West), and Dmitriy Zherdev (Cheltenham) were named to the Penn State Abington Spring 2014 Director’s List. This recognition is given for completing the spring semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

and Molly Wyman (Abington) were named to the Penn State Abington Spring 2014 Director’s List. This recognition is given for completing the spring semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

SOFTBALL
Sophomore Laura Altenburger (Neshaminy) hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, but West Chester’s comeback fell short as the Golden Rams were eliminated from the 2014 NCAA Division II Softball Championships with a 4-3 setback to No. 15 Dixie State Saturday. Erin Quense (Neshaminy) finished the game 2-for-3. She went 4-for-7 in West Chester’s three games. Altenburger, Jill Murray and Quense, the five, six and seven hitters in the lineup, accounted for 11 of West Chester’s 17 hits in the championships while also accounting for six of seven RBIs. They were 11-for-23 in the series. In West Chester’s 6-2 win over LIU-Post in an elimination game Saturday, Altenburger was 2-for-2 with a walk. Quense also had a hit. In Thursday’s opening round 5-1 loss to 19th-ranked Armstrong Atlantic, Quense homered.
Tiffany Gower (North Penn) set the Cairn University softball program record for most wins in a season with 10 and also recorded the second most strikeouts in school history for a season with 66. Highlighting her season, Gower was selected to the CSAC Honor Roll for the week of April 28 when she went 3-0 in conference play that week. In 25 innings pitched, she gave up four earned runs and struck out 13 with a 1.44 and holding opponents to a .191 batting average.

Bianca Monterosso (Abington) was named to the Penn State Abington Spring 2014 Director’s List. This recognition is given for completing the spring semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

was named to the Penn State Abington Spring 2014 Director’s List. This recognition is given for completing the spring semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Moravian junior Dillon Farrell (Wissahickon) earned second team All-Landmark Conference in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs.

Penn sophomore Drew Magaha (Upper Moreland) qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 800.

Matthew McGarvey (Central Bucks West) was part of Saint Joseph’s 4x800 relay that qualified for the finals of the 2014 IC4A Championships at Princeton University with a time of 7:39.78. McGarvey also raced in the 800m in 1:54.05 for 33rd.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Moravian freshman Lauren Suelke (Quakertown) was named Rookie of the Year in the Landmark Conference while also earning second team all-conference honors with second place finishes in the three jumps – the long jump, triple jump and high jump. “Lauren had another great meet, predominantly in the field events, finishing second in all three of the jumps, but she also set a really nice PR in the 100, breaking 13.0 for the first time in her career to finish fourth in the finals,” coach Jesse Baumann said.

Junior Alicia Evans (Quakertown) was part of Michigan State’s bronze medal 4x100 relay at the 2014 Big Ten Outdoor Championships last Sunday, setting a new school record with a NCAA Regional qualifying time of 44.91. Evans finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.79. The Spartan women finished sixth, just three points away from third with a total of 85 points.
Moravian senior Yacine Zerdoum (Central Bucks South) earned 2014 All-Landmark Conference second team honors in the 400-meter dash.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Cairn University junior Ryan Garven (Council Rock North) received the Highlander Award. He led the volleyball team with 343 kills.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Leah Brown (William Tennent), Breanne Kradzinski (Central Bucks South) and Kate Schalck (William Tennent) were named to the Penn State Abington Spring 2014 Director’s List. This recognition is given for completing the spring semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
