UPPER MERION 3, CHELTENHAM 2
Talk about an emotional roller coaster – Wednesday’s league opener between the Vikings and Lady Panthers was just that.
The Vikings were clinging to a 2-1 lead when the Lady Panthers scored with 1:45 remaining in regulation to knot the score. Overtime appeared inevitable, but the Vikings, or more specifically Kaitlyn Lutz, had other ideas.
After the Lady Panthers knotted the score, Lutz dribbled the ball from the 50 into the circle and fired a shot that was deflected into the cage by Danielle Antonucci for the dramatic game winner with 1:20 showing on the scoreboard clock.
“I told the girls after the game that it was one of my proudest moments as a coach to see them come back the way they did,” coach Angie Yanocha said. “Being scored on with 1:45 left wouldn’t give most teams enough time to come back, preventing overtime.
“When Cheltenham scored, my assistant asked if I needed a piece of paper to draw up my 7v7 lineup, but I never needed to, and quite honestly, never really had the chance because 25 seconds later we were back up by a goal. Kaitlyn Lutz, who controls the center of the field, said she didn’t want to go into overtime.”
Lutz made sure that didn’t happen, and the Vikings improved to 2-0 on the young season.
Antonucci finished the day with the hat trick while Maggie Noonan contributed an assist.
“It was an overall team effort, but I have to give credit to Kaitlyn Lutz, a senior, for her tough play, tenacity and taking charge in the win,” Yanocha said. “Fellow senior Danielle Antonucci has been having a strong season so far and recorded her first career hat trick.”
The Lady Panthers got off to a quick start, scoring a goal five minutes into the game, but by halftime, the Vikings – thanks to a pair of Antonucci goals – had a 2-1 lead. That lead stood until the game’s final minutes.
“We’re very happy to start the season 2-0,” Yanocha said. “It helps that we’re playing as a team and working well together.”
Upper Merion goalie Devyn Antonucci was credited with eight saves.
While the Vikings are 1-0 in league play (2-0 overall), the Lady Panthers are 0-1 in the league (0-2 overall).

PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 6, UPPER MORELAND 0
The Colonials blew open a close game with four second-half goals to earn their first win of the season. Five different players scored goals for the Colonials, who took a lead they would not lose when Paige Totten turned an Aurora Mills pass into a goal at the 26:24 mark of the first half. Totten return the favor, assisting on a Mills goal to send the Colonials into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, PW received goals from Alison Spinelli (Totten assist), Kerin Bechiel, Frankie O’Brien and Totten (Spinelli assist). Totten finished the game with two goals and two assists.
“Paige scored three-and-a-half minutes into the game, which got us off to a good start,” PW coach Marianne Paparone said of Totten. “We played a much better game today at both ends of the field.
“Our passing and defense showed a lot of improvement. Alison and Frankie both scored off corners on solid shots. Tori Byrne earned the shutout in goal. We hope this win gets us going in the right direction.”

CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 4, PENNRIDGE 0
Freshman Riley Donnelly connected for the hat trick to lead the Patriots to an impressive win over a Lady Ram squad that twice shut out East last season.
“It was a nice win,” coach Brittany Kocis said. “They have the talent, and this year, they’re starting to believe in themselves again, and you can really tell the difference.
“You can see that they’re having fun, and they’re trusting each other. That’s the most important thing. You have to believe in your teammates and your coaching staff to be successful.”
Donnelly scored off a Sydney Badger assist to send the Patriots into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
“We had opportunities, and we were just missing,” Kocis said.
Back-to-back goals by Donnelly, the first with an assist from Ana Careghini and the other with a Katelyn Stout assist, put the Patriots on top 3-0. An unassisted goal by Maggie Stella closed out the scoring.
“(Riley) happened to be the last person to touch it, but they all really worked together,” Kocis said. “Their passing was just beautiful.
“Everyone was getting a touch on it, and Riley was in the center and was ready to put the ball in the net.”
Kocis went on to credit the performance of several players.
“Sydney Badger, one of our defenders, really stepped up today and was just very strong getting the ball up the field,” the first-year coach said. “Katelyn Stout did a great job handling the ball and clearing the ball up to the forwards.”
The Patriots upped their record to 2-0 on the young season (1-0 SOL) while the Lady Rams are 0-2 (0-1 SOL).

CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 3, NORTH PENN 1
The new-look Titans played their conference ‘home’ opener on the turf at North Penn, and they broke open a tightly-contested game with a pair of second half goals, turning a 1-1 halftime tie into the 3-1 win, thanks to goals by senior co-captains Emily Cliggett and Corrine Kenney.
“I kind of just felt like throwing down to our forwards – our forwards can move when they have the ball, and once we started having a little bit of mojo, it kept on building and kept on building,” said Kenney, who controlled play in the middle of the field. “Once Emily scored, it kind of was like, ‘Okay, we can do this. We have possession.’”
The Titans controlled play for the better part of the second half to earn the much-needed win after Friday’s 5-0 non-league loss to Inter-Ac power Episcopal Academy.
“It was a good turnaround,” first-year coach Brittany Grzywacz said. “They were a little bit down in the dumps. It doesn’t feel good to lose, but I said to them, ‘If we make the changes we need to make at practice, we can learn from it and leave it in the past.’”
Those changes became evident in the second half after the two teams exchanged goals in an evenly played first half. South’s Lauren Zakrewski (Alexa Milanesi assist) scored at the 10:38 mark, and Emma Herb answered with a deflection over the goalie to make it a 1-1 game at the half.
Cliggett scored on a highlight reel individual effort, carrying the ball into the circle, dodging the lone defender in the path and rifling a shot into the back of the cage at the 20:50 mark to put the Titans on top 2-1. Ten minutes later, the Titans capitalized on a corner when Kenney (Cliggett assist) fired a rocket into the cage for the 3-1 final.
“The girls – they’re awesome,” Grzywacz said. “I tell them something, and they make the changes, and from a coaching standpoint, that’s an awesome thing to have.”
The first-year coach acknowledged that the seniors will play a key role on this year’s squad.
“Especially with there being so many new faces, the leadership of all of our seniors is so important,” Grzywacz said. “Having that confidence, which is something I spoke to them about today – having that confidence in what you’re doing and the decisions you’re making, and they do have that.
“They have the experience to have that confidence, which is so big and so key. The younger players see that and learn from that.”
The Titans are 1-1 overall (1-0 SOL) while the Maidens – 24 hours removed from an emotional 3-2 overtime win over Downingtown West – fell to 1-2 overall (0-1 SOL).
“We needed to win this game to set the tone for our upcoming games this week against Haboro-Horsham and Conestoga because they’re big games too,” Cliggett said. “We just need to prepare ourselves for the season.”

HATBORO-HORSHAM 1, SOUDERTON 0
The Hatters won the game thanks to a backhand chip goal by Sydney Rausa (Gabby Acker assist) with seven minutes remaining in the first half, but the Indians were in this one until the final horn.
“We’ve been playing extremely well,” Souderton coach Lauren Whiteside said. “We’ve been connecting with each other. We were actually pretty proud of how we played against Hatboro-Horsham.
“They’re a good team with state playoff experience, so for us to keep them to 1-0 was a big deal for us. We started our league season off with a hard team, and we know that we can hang.”
The Hatters had an advantage in shots (10-8) and corners (6-3). Hatboro goalie Emily Braunewell was credited with five saves in the shutout while Souderton’s Shelby Landes turned away nine shots.
“Our defense did a really good job shutting down their forwards,” Whiteside said. “Our goalie, Shelby Landes, played out of her mind. She was diving, she was saving with one-handed glove saves. She did a really, really great job. Shelby was our key in the backfield.”
The Hatters are 2-0 overall (1-0 SOL) while the Indians are 1-1 (0-1 SOL).
