PENNSBURY 7, ABINGTON 1
Senior Uche Onuoha and sophomore Mary Webb each scored two goals Wednesday, and junior Jayden Peto added a goal and two assists, as the Falcons won their SOL National opener.
Sophomore Meredith Webber opened the scoring in the seventh minute with an assist from senior Megan Engeland. Onuoha followed in the 19th minute with her first goal of the match with an assist from Peto.
About three minutes later, Webb scored her first goal of the match unassisted, then followed it with a 30th minute marker with Peto's second assist of the game.
Unuoha got her second goal of the half in the 36th minute from Webber, as the Falcons went into intermission with a 5-1 lead.
In the second half, Peto added her name to the goal column in the 52nd minute with an assist from Engeland.
Senior defender Amy Blazejewski capped the scoring in the 68th minute with an assist from Engeland off a corner kick.
For Abington (0-2, 0-1 SOL), Jamie Gosselin scored in the 24th minute with an assist from Tess Nelson.
Pennsbury junior goalkeeper Nany Santiago had only one save to make, mostly from strong defense by the Falcons, Abington goalkeepers Bree Cifaldi and Destiny Walters combined for 14 saves.
"Our defense played really well today," Pennsbury head coach Kaitlyn Battiste said. "We had Caroline Foley, another sophomore, anchoring our defense, and we also got great play from our outside defenders, including Blazejewski and (junior) Karina Raykova."
Both teams' next games will be SOL National matchups Friday afternoon. The Ghosts will host Neshaminy, and the Falcons will travel to Council Rock North.
Battiste referenced how Pennsbury (2-0, 1-0 SOL) was unable to beat the Indians last season in two meetings--a 1-1 tie and later a 2-0 loss--so playing well early in the season has become crucial.
"Even though we had that lead at halftime, we were focusing on things we still could improve upon, even into the second half," Battiste said. "We're always looking to get better from each game to the next, as we know there is tough competition in the league."
Abington 1-0 1

NORTH PENN 2, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 1
Junior forward Tina Miller scored in the 12th minute with an assist from junior midfielder Hannah Alexander, then both players reversed roles in the 78th minute, with Miller assisting on Alexander's goals, as the Maidens held off a late Titans push to win their SOL Continental opener.
For South (1-1, 0-1 SOL) Meghan Kuypers scored in the 79th minute and gave the Titans one last hope of a comeback.
But the Maidens ultiimately stifled South's bid to reach overtime.
"(Senior goalkeeper) Laura Leonard had a dominant game in goal with help from steady defense from (juniors) Jani Johnston and Liz Volz," North Penn head coach Jim Dehner said.
Leonard and South goalkeeper Sophia Boggs each recorded six saves in the contest.
The Titans return home for an SOL Continental contest Friday afternoon with Hatboro-Horsham, and North Penn (2-0, 1-0 SOL) will travel Friday to Central Bucks East.

CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 2, PENNRIDGE 2 (2 OT)
The Rams and Patriots, as they had done last September, battled to a tie in their first head-to-head meeting, this time the SOL Continental opener for both teams.
Pennridge got the first and last goals of the match, as Jess Milligan scored 30 seconds into the contest, and Tori Conroy eventually scored the final tying goal in the 70th minute.
East (1-0-1, 0-0-1 SOL) scored two first-half goals, as Emma Loving scored in the 29th minute with an assist from Emily Horn. Kristen Murphy then scored in the 39th minute assisted by Kate Schlotter, as East led at halftime, 2-1.
The Patriots' next SOL Continental contest is Friday hosting North Penn before a non-league game Saturday at West Chester Henderson, rescheduled from Tuesday.
Having a 1-0-1 record heading into this weekend is helpful, East head coach Paul Eisold said.
"This allows our players to understand what the game is about," the Patriots’ coach said. "We have a lot of younger players who need experience, and there is no better way than to throw them to the wolves, (figuratively)--Pennridge is a very good squad, so I thought it was a good game for us."
The Rams (1-0-1, 0-0-1 SOL) will play Saturday afternoon at Central Bucks West.

SOUDERTON 3, HATBORO-HORSHAM 2 (OT)
(Submitted article)
Souderton struck fast and furious in the second half, and when the dust had settled, the Indians had mounted a historic comeback against the Lady Hatters to win in OT.
On a beautiful night at Hatters stadium, the game see-sawed back and forth, first favoring the Lady Hatters who capitalized on excellent play from Mikaela Malofiy and her strike partner Gwyn Acker to take a 2-0 goal lead into the second half. But Souderton wouldn't back down, and the Indians’ relentless speed started to pay dividends. Using a two-goal effort by junior Maddie Doepner, including the overtime winner, Souderton showed intangible qualities and great character to earn a big league victory.
Doepner’s game-winner came on a top corner shot from outside the box. Also scoring for the Indians was Kylie Heath, who connected for her team’s first goal after the Hatters took a two-goal lead into halftime. Doepner closed it out with back-to-back goals.
Coaches for both teams applauded their effort and the excitement of this high school soccer match.
“It was a game that had something for everyone,” said Hatters coach Ben Winderman. "The matchup down our left-hand side between our left Back Lauren Kim and number five (Heath) from Souderton was a classic dual.
“This is Lauren's first year playing in the back for us, and as a sophomore, she is showing tremendous toughness and tremendous savvy in a season that each game finds her a better and better player."
But Kim's effort along with her defending unit of Kerryn MacBride, Haley Freedman, and Maddie Slemmer was overshadowed by Heath, Maddy Doepner and the rest of the Souderton side.
"We have been fortunate enough to feel the thrill and euphoria of overtime victory this year, and so it is fitting that we understand the bitterness of defeat," said Winderman.
For Souderton (1-1, 1-0 SOL), the game would appear to be a breakthrough victory and one which they can use as momentum in their next league contest. Both teams are in action again Friday with the Hatters (2-0-1, 0-1 SOL) traveling to CB South and Souderton squaring up against Quakertown at home.

UPPER MERION 5, CHELTENHAM 2
The Vikings got all their scoring from juniors--Anna Davis and Rose Sedgwick, who scored two goals each, along with Lexi Ryan--in their SOL American Conference opener.
In helping Upper Merion to a 4-1 halftime lead, Ryan scored in the 16th minute, and Davis got quick back-to-back tallies in the 31st and 32nd minutes.
Sedgwick scored the first of her back-to-back goals in the first half (35th minute) then added the other in the 50th minute.
Upper Merion head coach Laura Himler said sophomore sweeper Robyn Rhindress helped the back line of the defense.
After a 5-0 non-league loss Monday at Marple-Newtown, Himler was encouraged to see the Vikings bounce back quickly with a relatively young roster.
"It helps boost our confidence," Himler said. "This win can help us jell together as a team and see that, even though we're young, we can still be competitors in this league."
Krissy Rycek and sophomore Ruby Tomasic scored Cheltenham's goals.
The Panthers (0-1 SOL) return to SOL American action Friday afternoon hosting Upper Dublin, while Upper Merion (1-2, 1-0 SOL) will play at Plymouth Whitemarsh.
After the offensive outburst against Cheltenham, Himler said, the team should feel somewhat better heading into the next game.
"I'm excited that we're going to be able to connect up top," the first-year coac said. "I think we're going to need it against Plymouth Whitemarsh, as they're always a tough matchup--it's going to be a good game."
