MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington junior Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) was chosen as the NEAC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week ending August 31. Competing at the Albright College “Lights Out” Invitational to open the season, the junior set a new school record for a six-kilometer course, finishing in 19:29 and taking eighth place overall out of 58 runners. Abington finished third out of five teams.
Kane clinched the top spot at the Penn State Abington Invitational at Lorimer Park Saturday. In the past three seasons, Kane has shattered his personal best time on the course, and on Saturday, he achieved a time of 29:13 on the 8-kilometer course. The men’s team finished first in the 10-team event.
IUP’s Tim Lynch (Souderton) finished 21st at the Doug Watts Open Invitational hosted by Edinboro University on Saturday. Austin Cooper (Upper Merion) was 25th at the six-team invitational.
Shippensburg sophomore Alec Brand (Central Bucks East) finished 13th with a time of 19:46 at the 2014 Galen E Piper Alumni Open/Cross Country Challenge. The men’s team, ranked No. 9 in Division II, claimed first place in the event. Alex Balla (Quakertown) finished 31st with a time of 20:25.
Penn State sophomore Conner Quinn (Hatboro-Horsham) ran a time of 18:14.47 and placed sixth at the 2014 Dolan Duals on Friday at Lock Haven. The Nittany Lions captured the team title.
Gwynedd Mercy’s Rashaun Crawford (Wissahickon) finished 54th to close out the team scoring at the Highlander Invitational hosted by Cairn University on Saturday.
GOLF
La Salle senior Greg Goodreds (Hatboro-Horsham) is tied for 65th after two rounds at the season opening Colgate Invitational after shooting an 84 and 79 (163).
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Shippensburg redshirt freshman Sarah Latch (Central Bucks East) finished 27th with a time of 15:59 at the 2014 Galen Piper Open/Cross Country Challenge on Friday. The women’s team, ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division III, won the event for the sixth time in seven years. Gabby Brackett (Bensalem) posted a time of 16:49.
Gwynedd Mercy freshman Emily Makara (Council Rock South) finished 32nd at the Highlander Invitational hosted by Cairn University on Saturday. The team placed sixth out of 18 scoring teams.
Kutztown’s Elizabeth McLaughlin (Upper Dublin) turned in a 16:26 performance for 48th place at the Galen Piper Invitational at Shippensburg. Kutztown finished sixth as a team in the 4K race. Carolyn Fergus (North Penn) placed 57th with a time of 16:40.
FIELD HOCKEY
Saint Joseph freshman Melissa Herd (Pennridge) was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week. Herd started both of the Hawks’ first two games and scored her first career goal in the Hawks’ 4-1 win over Towson. The Pennridge grad is the only freshman on the Hawk roster to start both games this season. The Hawks opened the season 2-0 for the first time since 2006, topping Lehigh 2-1 before routing Towson.
Taylor Prichett (William Tennent) scored four goals in Delaware Valley’s 8-1 win over Elmira on Saturday. Freshman Carlie Baldus (Hatboro-Horsham) picked up her first collegiate goal when she blasted a shot from just inside the circle that beat the Elmira keeper to the left side.
Senior captain Maddy Harding (Central Bucks South) scored her first goal of the season on a penalty corner in Villanova’s 4-2 loss to Fairfield on Friday. In Monday’s 4-1 win over Missouri State, junior forward Kayla Kenney (Central Bucks South) was credited with an assist.
Stanford junior Lauren Becker (Wissahickon) was named the GoStandford Student-Athlete of the week for her performance in victories against No. 28 Delaware and Liberty. Becker, a communications major, scored a team-best three goals over two games and was a constant threat in the offensive zone. She scored twice against Delaware and registered the game-winner against conference rival Liberty.
Sophomore Gabby Tofig (Council Rock North) scored her team’s only goal in Lehigh’s 3-1 loss to Monmouth on Sunday.
Freshman Megan Hamilton (Central Bucks South) scored her first collegiate goal in Providence’s 3-1 loss to 13th-ranked Boston College on Friday afternoon.
Junior Bryn Frankhouser (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored a goal in Scranton’s 9-0 win over Marywood on Saturday.
Rachel Valentine (Souderton) scored a goal to give Lock Haven a 1-0 lead in the Eagles 2-1 win at Georgetown on Sunday.
Sophomore Kelly Schlupp (Council Rock South) split time in goal in The College of New Jersey’s 8-0 win at FDU-Florham on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 8-1 win over Manhattanville College, Schlupp was credited with one save to earn the win while teammate Amanda Krause (Council Rock North) also had a save in the game.
Freshman Rachael Mueller (William Tennent) scored her second goal of the season in Temple’s 6-1 win at Rutgers on Friday. In Temple’s 4-2 win over Northeastern on Aug. 29, Mueller scored her first collegiate goal. Lycoming senior Craig Needhammer (North Penn) earned a spot on the Middle Atlantic Conference’s weekly honor roll. Needhammer finished with 23 carries for 111 yards and three touchdowns in the Warriors’ season-opening 42-13 win over Susquehanna. He tied the school record for career rushing touchdowns of 29 set by Tim Deasey from 1998-2001.
Needhammer scored three touchdowns to lead Lycoming to a 42-13 rout of Susquehanna University in the Stagg Hat Trophy game on Saturday in front of 3,087 fans at David Person Field. It was his 11th career 100-yard game. He scored on runs of one, one and two yards. He tied the school record for career rushing touchdowns with his final score with 12:10 left in the fourth quarter, giving the Warriors a four-touchdown lead. Teammate John Sibel (Pennsbury) had four receptions for 54 yards.
Gerard Wendowski (North Penn) had six catches for 81 yards in his first career start in East Stroudsburg’s 43-35 win at LIU Post on Saturday. Senior defensive end Brandon Gattelli (Bensalem) was credited with one of ESU’s four sacks.
Junior kicker Eric Boyer (Upper Dublin) connected on a 19-yard field goal and was 6-for-6 on extra points in Ursinus College’s 47-7 win over The College of New Jersey on Friday night. Sophomore running back Corey Kelly (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had a four-yard touchdown run and was the game’s leading ground gainer with 68 yards on 10 carries. Josh Williams (Central Bucks South) had one reception for 16 yards.
Wide receiver Sheldon Mayer (Norristown) had nine catches for 194 yards and one touchdown in Shippensburg’s 55-30 win over Seton Hill on Thursday. He caught a tipped pass on a short crossing pattern late in the first quarter and used a variety of broken tackles, spin moves, jukes and other maneuvers to evade the defense and ultimately sprint 88 yards for a touchdown – marking the fifth longest pass play in school history.
Fifth-year wide receiver Mike Doty (Central Bucks South) led all receivers with five catches for 75 yards in No. 10 West Chester’s 35-30 win over New Haven on Saturday. Included in his five receptions was a 38-yard touchdown reception on West Chester’s opening drive.
Myron Myles (Wissahickon) had 97 yards on 14 carries in Millersville’s 46-44 loss to Livingstone on Thursday night.

La Salle freshman Johnny Ciarlante (William Tennent) was named to the All-Tournament team of the Windjammer Classic in Burlington, Vt., this weekend. Ciarlante scored La Salle’s only goal in Friday’s 2-1 loss to Vermont.
Tyler Afflerbach (Souderton) was credited with four saves in Drexel’s 1-0 win over Villanova on Wednesday. He now has eight career shutouts.
Senior goalkeeper Dan Saint-Pol (Pennridge) was credited with seven saves in Penn State Abington’s 1-0 loss to Randolph College. He kept the Nittany Lions in it with a spectacular save in the 58th minute off a headshot by Randolph’s Troy Jurney.
Sophomore Jamie Bonner (North Penn) scored a goal to break a 1-1 tie in Eastern University’s 3-1 win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday. Jonathan Nazon (North Penn) contributed an assist on Eastern’s third goal of the game.
Ryan Molyneaux (Souderton) contributed an assist in Ursinus College’s 2-1 loss to Widener on Wednesday.
Kyle MacDonald (Pennsbury) contributed an assist in No. 16 Penn State’s 3-1 win over St. John’s last Sunday night.
Alex Lean (Council Rock North) scored a goal in the 13th minute in West Chester’s 2-1 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday.

Senior Kimber Kisselback (Neshaminy) scored the game’s lone goal in the 27th minute as Holy Family defeated New York Tech by the score of 1-0 on Saturday. Her goal – the 10th of her career - came midway through the first half.
Senior Molly Phillips (Pennsbury) scored a goal in Gettysburg’s 2-0 win at Shenandoah University on Wednesday.
First-year Dickinson starter Andrea Caya (Pennridge) scored her third goal in four games against Eastern University. She is third in scoring in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils are currently undefeated.
Megan Kelley (North Penn) contributed an assist on the first goal in Millersville’s 2-0 upset of No. 7 Slippery Rock in Saturday’s season opener.
Ashley Schoelkopf (Pennridge) saw 14 minutes of action in IUP’s 6-0 win over Lock Haven on Thursday and blocked two shots.
Sophomore midfielder Kayla Nolan (Abington) chipped a shot into the net to give her team a 1-0 lead in Penn State Abington’s 3-0 win over Gallaudet University. It was Nolan’s third goal of the season. Junior midfielder Cindy Wade (Abington) was credited with an assist. Nolan also had a game-high four shots on net. Sophomore forward Megan Murphy (William Tennent) scored the Nittany Lions’ third goal. It was her first goal of the season.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Victoria Bremer (William Tennent) recorded four saves in her college debut in Shippensburg’s 5-2 loss to No. 12 California on Thursday.
Senior Cara Deola (Council Rock South) scored a goal and assisted on another to lead West Chester to a 3-1 win over Wilmington (Del.) in Thursday’s season opener. Teammate Carly Yost (North Penn) also scored a goal during a three-goal run after the Rams had fallen behind 1-0. In Saturday’s 2-0 win over Kutztown, Deola scored a goal.

Penn State freshman Megan Schafer (Neshaminy) was named the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week for the week ending Sept. 1. Schafer came in as a reserve and netted a pair of goals, including the game winner, in Penn State’s 3-1 win over UConn. She became the first Nittany Lion freshman to score a pair of goals in a match since 2010. The Neshaminy grad scored the game winner in the 27th minute, She scored again at 43:49, rising above a goal mouth scramble following a Penn State corner kick for the 3-0 lead. She played a season-high 62 minutes and took a team best four shots, three of which were on net. This is the first Big Ten weekly honor of the season for a Nittany Lions.

Casey Griffith (Upper Merion) was credited with 14 digs in UMBC’s 3-0 loss to No. 5 Washington on Saturday.
Freshman Melanie Ingram (Upper Merion) had a team-high seven kills and 22 defensive digs in Holy Family’s 3-0 loss to Millersville at the Marauder Clash on Saturday. Senior Devyn Ingram (Upper Merion) paced the offense with 23 assists to go along with six digs.
Junior Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) served for seven consecutive points in Cabrini’s 25-15 win in the second set of the Cavaliers’ 3-0 win over Widener on Thursday. The win snapped Cabrini’s longest losing streak in six years. Koenig finished the match with 34 assists.
Senior Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) tallied eight kills in Franklin & Marshall’s 3-1 win over Lebanon Valley on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 3-1 win over York, Harley led the Diplomats with seven kills.
Sophomore Sam Nelson (Central Bucks West) posted a career-high six service aces and collected 16 assists in Penn State Abington’s 3-0 win over Trinity Washington. For the day, which saw the Nittany Lions go 1-2, Nelson posted 45 assists.
Stephanie Elechco (North Penn) was credited with 11 kills in No. 11 Eastern University’s 3-2 win over Randolph Macon College at the UMW Invitational on Saturday. In Eastern’s 3-0 sweep of Geneva College earlier in the day, Elechko hit .500 with eight kills and a solo block. She also served five aces. In Friday’s 3-1 upset at the hands of No. 19 Christopher Newport, Elechko recorded eight kills.
Freshman outside hitter Taylor McCartney (Pennsbury) had 16 kills in Ursinus College’s 3-0 win over Penn State-Mont Alto. She had a .419 killing percentage as her 16 kills came on 31 total attacks. In the Bears’ 3-0 win over Hood, McCartney had 10 kills.
Senior tri-captain Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was named to the All-Tournament team at the 2014 Courtyard Midtown Classic at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C. In the tournament, she recorded 35 kills (2.92/set), a .200 hitting percentage and six service aces. In Friday’s 3-0 win over Toledo, Maugle posted her fourth straight double-double, finishing with 11 kills and 11 digs.
Sophomore Abby Mummert (Central Bucks South) had a career-high 12 kills in Shippensburg’s 3-1 win over Holy Family at the Marauder Clash Tournament hosted by Millersville University. She had a collegiate-best .500 hitting percentage as she had just two errors in the match. She finished the day – which also included a 3-0 win over Stonehill - with 19 kills, hitting .364 on 44 attempts, served three aces, racked up 17 digs and also had six blocks.
Junior Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) led the attack with 10 kills in Kutztown’s 3-0 sweep of Winston-Salem State at the Winston-Salem State University Invite on Saturday. In Kutztown’s sweep of Elizabeth City State, Stringer had a team-high eight kills. In Friday’s 3-2 win over Ursuline, Stringer had 11 kills, and in Kutztown’s 3-2 loss to West Virginia State, Stringer led the way with 13 kills and seven blocks on the front line.
Junior defensive specialist Deanna Bianchini (Wissahickon) headlined an impressive team performance on the serve for Chestnut Hill at the Marauder Clash where the team split Saturday’s matches, defeating Virginia Union 3-0 and falling to Millersville 3-1. In Chestnut Hill’s 3-0 loss to Shippensburg, Bianchini had a pair of digs.
