The second meeting of the Pennsbury and Neshaminy boy's lacrosse team was a victory for both teams, and that's because the game was a fund-raising event for the HEADStrong foundation, which is dedicated to the fight against blood cancer. Both teams purchased and wore the signature lime green HEADStrong shoe laces and also the new HEADStrong crew socks, and the fans crowded around the booth, manned by Pat Colleluori – Nick's dad, to buy all the HEADStrong gear. You can find out more about the HEADStrong story and mission, and how you can help, at www.headstrongfoundation.org.
There was also a boy's lacrosse game played, and the Pennsbury Falcons swept the season series against the Neshaminy Redskins by a score of 7-3. The game between these rivals was intense, with both teams playing hard-nosed defense with neither allowing a goal in the first 9 ½ minutes of the game, until the Pennsbury defense caused a Neshaminy turnover in the Falcon end. Pennsbury attackman Peter Sweetland took the outlet pass at midfield and raced into the offensive zone on a fast break and found attackman Kenneth Warren with a head-man pass up the middle. Warren took the pin-point pass, triple-faked and quick-sticked the ball past Redskin goalie Eugene LaBorde and into the back of the net. With the ice broken, Neshaminy took their turn when midfielder Alex Forman took the ball behind the crease and muscled his way to the side of the crease where he under-handed a shot past Falcon goalie Chris Shubert to knot the score at 1-1.
The second period saw the Falcons bust the game open with a four goal to none burst. It started with all-league defenseman Ben McDannell stripping the ball from Neshaminy middie Andy McPherson and clearing to Kenneth Warren, who took the ball to the restraining line, faked a pass to clear some running room, and broke down the middle. When the Redskin defense slid to cover him, he rifled a pass to fellow attackman Calvin Hopkins on the crease, who quick-sticked it in for the second Falcon goal. Pennsbury followed up with another goal six seconds later when freshman Evan Caterson won the face-off and possession, ran up the left side and found attackman Danny Caggia open for a catch and shoot goal. After more back and forth possessions, the Falcons broke serve when Peter Sweetland dodged from the wing to the top of the formation and ripped a shot for the next Pennsbury goal at the five minute mark of the period. The blitz ended when midfielder Shawn Caven worked his way behind the net and found Warren alone at the restraining line, who ripped a long range underhand bullet shot past the Redskin goalie for a 5-1 halftime lead for the Falcons.
The second half began with more tough defense by both teams. The Falcons were pressing the ball on the outside, while the Redskins were packing their defense in front of their net. The differing strategies were both successful until the Falcons found themselves in a man-down situation after a slashing penalty on Warren. The Redskins made the most of the opportunity when Ryan Hutchinson found Jim Rambo alone in the middle, who executed a perfect catch-turn-and-shoot for the extra-man score and inching the score closer at 5-2.
The final quarter saw Neshaminy make their move when Alex Forman shook the ball loose from the Falcon's Evan Caterson and cleared the ball into the Pennsbury side of the field. Following a loose ball in front of the Falcon net, Redskin attackman Chris Brady came up with the ball, ran a few steps away from the scrum, turned and fireed the ball into the back of the net for a 5-3 score with 9 minutes to go in the game. But Pennsbury used its defense to turn the momentum back around. After weathering an extended five minute offensive possession by Neshaminy, the Falcons broke out with a ground ball pickup by McDannell, who beat the ride and got the ball up to the Pennsbury offense, who used crisp passes to move the ball around the goal, with Shawn Caven feeding Sweetland up top. Sweetland ripped the ball long-range to extend the Falcon lead to 6-3 at the 4 minute mark. Sweetland scored again 30 seconds later when he scooped up the rebound of a Warren shot and side-armed it into the net for his third goal of the game, finalizing the score at 7-3 Pennsbury. But before the Falcons could put the victory to bed, they had to hold off a frenzied Neshaminy charge for the last 3 ½ minutes of the game, with goalie Chris Shubert making saves on shots by Chris Brady and Alex Forman. The Falcon win marks the first time that Pennsbury has swept the season series from Neshaminy.
The win puts Pennsbury 9-6 overall and 7-1 in the Suburban One National conference. Neshaminy is 8-8 overall and 3-5 in the Suburban One National conference.
