Four SOL boys’ soccer teams will be in action on Tuesday. Check back for a recap of all the action.
Tuesday promises to be an interesting day for the SOL soccer teams in action when district play resumes.
In District One Class AAA action, three SOL teams are vying for four state berths. At least one – the winner of the All-SOL Plymouth Whitemarsh/Central Bucks East game – will advance. That 5 p.m. game will be part of a soccer tripleheader at War Memorial Field, sandwiched between the Central Bucks West/Owen J Roberts and Central Bucks East/Conestoga girls’ games. Wissahickon will host sixth-seeded West Chester Henderson in a 7 p.m. contest.
At the Class AA level, fourth-seeded Springfield (Montco) will have the unenviable task of facing Bicentennial League champion Holy Ghost Prep, the defending state champion. Those two teams will do battle at Souderton Area High School at 5 p.m.
#3 WISSAHICKON vs. #6 WEST CHESTER HENDERSON
Wissahickon
- 17-2-0 overall
- 12-2-0 second place SOL American Conference
- Knocked #2 Neshaminy from the ranks of the undefeated with a 2-1 win on Sept. 12.
- Regular season wins over #5 Plymouth Whitemarsh (3-0) and #16 Radnor (2-1)
How they got here: After a first round bye, the Trojans crushed Springfield (Delco) 6-1 in Saturday’s second round game. Cole Kropnick set the tone with two early goals, and when he was leveled by the Cougars’ goalie on a breakaway, the Trojans were awarded a penalty stroke that Devon Memis converted. The Trojans also received single goals from Sam Hunt, Alex Tappen and Alex Chiodo-Ortiz. Memis, Hunt, Shane Fallen and Henry Zhong each contributed an assist.
West Chester Henderson
- 16-4 overall
- 10-3 Ches-Mont League National Division champions
- Regular season wins over #15 Great Valley (1-0), #18 Owen J Roberts (2-0), #23 Downingtown East (1-0), #25 West Chester East (2-0) and #27 Perkiomen Valley (2-0)
How they got here: The Warriors earned the dramatic 2-1 overtime win over 11th-seeded Kennett when Zach Roberts scored on a header off a corner kick in the 88th minute. Travis Wilson accounted for the other goal. In the Warriors’ opening round 1-0 overtime win over 27th-seeded Perkiomen Valley, sophomore Frankie DeRosa scored the game winner 1:15 into overtime.
#4 CENTRAL BUCKS EAST vs. #5 PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH (5 p.m. at War Memorial Field)
Central Bucks East
- 17-2-0 overall
- 13-1-0 SOL Continental Conference champions
- Pair of regular season wins over #9 North Penn (1-0 & 2-1) and defeated previously undefeated District 2 power Coughlin (3-1)
- Won first 12 Continental Conference games
- Racked up six consecutive shutouts to open season.
- Avenged a regular season 2-0 loss to #20 Methacton with 1-0 overtime win over the Warriors in Saturday’s second round.
How they got here: After a first round bye, the Patriots earned a 1-0 overtime win over 20th-seeded Methacton, thanks to a goal by junior Evan Vare with 3:42 remaining in the first OT. J.R. Eisold had the assist after a Booker Farrior throw-in.
Plymouth Whitemarsh
- 18-2-0 overall
- 13-1-0 SOL American Conference champions
- Split regular season series with #3 Wissahickon, winning initial meeting 2-1 on Sept. 9 and falling to the Trojans 3-0 in Oct. 1 rematch.
- Responded to first loss of season (1-0 to Radnor on Sept. 13) with six consecutive shutouts
- Colonials led by 17 seniors
How they got here: In Saturday’s second round, the Colonials rallied from a 1-0 deficit to earn a 2-1 win over 21st-seeded Lower Merion. Alex Bilodeau accounted for both of his team’s goals, the first with an assist from David Reina. Goalie Shane Smith came up with some big stops. In PW’s 3-1 opening round win over Abington, senior captains Cam Johnson and Dominic Wlodarczyk as well as junior Skyler Goldstein each scored a goal for the Colonials.
Class AA
#4 SPRINGFIELD vs. #1 HOLY GHOST PREP (5:30 p.m. at Souderton)
Springfield
- 10-6-2
- 6-6-2 fourth place SOL American Conference
- Recorded six shutouts on the season.
Players to watch: Riley Woron, senior midfielder; Ben Wiley, senior midfielder; Igor McVeagh, senior defender.
How they got here: The Spartans rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit in their quarterfinal game against fifth-seeded Bishop Shanahan to score three unanswered goals in the second half on their way to a 3-1 win. Zach Harley, Corey Cottone (Sasha McVeagh assist) and Igor McVeagh (Ethan Steinberg assist) each scored a goal for the Spartans.
Holy Ghost Prep
- 13-4-1 overall
- 10-0 BAL champions
- Defending PIAA Class AA state champion
- Led by BAL MVP Michael Kirby and first team All-BAL honorees Joe Braun, Teddy Kawoczka, Matt Lingerman and Jake Weimert.
- Regular season wins over #3 Lower Moreland (4-0 & 2-1) and Class AAA #25 West Chester East (4-1)
