Springfield (Montco) saw its memorable postseason run come to an end in Saturday’s opening round of the PIAA Class AA State Tournament when the Spartans fell to Neumann-Goretti 32-7 in a game played at the South Philly Super Site.
The Spartans trailed by just an 8-0 score at halftime as the Saints used a Mike DiFrancesco 30-yard touchdown pass to Ray Lenhart to get on the scoreboard in the second quarter. On the Saints’ two-point conversation attempt, Kahill Roane ran it in to put the Saints on top 8-0.
A pair of Saints’ touchdowns in the third quarter – the first on a 13-yard run by Roane and the second on a 25-yard interception return by miles Brewer as well as a pair of two-point conversions – gave Neumann-Goretti a 24-0 lead heading into the final quarter.
A six-yard TD run by Brewer and a fourth successful two-point conversion – this one on a Fabian Matthews run – put the Saints on top 32-0 before Chris Stone found George Baughan with a 22-yard touchdown strike for the 32-7 final.
Justin Hill and Martin Worgan led the Spartans defensively with seven tackles each.
The Spartans closed out the year with a 6-7 record and a District One Class AA title to their credit.
