Bensalem senior Jackie Morell was recognized for signing a letter of intent to play softball at Kutztown University.
Jackie Morell – Kutztown University (Softball)
Major: Visually Impaired Special Education
Reasons for selecting Kutztown: “They have my major and also a winning softball program.”
What was the progression that led you to playing softball at the collegiate level? “During my freshman year at Bensalem High School, I was given the opportunity to be the starting varsity pitcher. I realized that I had what it took to compete at a higher level, and that led me to my decision to play in college.
“The end of my junior year I became very interested in Kutztown University. I visited the campus and loved it. Throughout the summer, I talked to Coach Lawes quite a bit, and that just sealed the deal. I wanted to be a part of her program.
“I feel unbelievably blessed to play the sport I love at the collegiate level. I would like to thank my coaches at Sports Connection and coach (Dan) Schram at Bensalem High School for making me the player I am.”
Coach Dan Schram says: “Three things win games, and on average, they happen in this order – pitching, quality defense and timely hitting. Jackie has been the starting pitcher for the Owls for the past three years. Pitching is part mental and it’s part physical. Most pitchers compensate and dominate in one or the other. Jackie is one of the most cerebral and mentally tough pitchers I’ve ever seen in the game of softball and baseball. This young lady is what we at Bensalem call ‘Bensalem strong,’ and I’m proud and I’m fortunate for her to call me coach. I think she was born with abilities, but she also is the product of a wonderful family unit that has made her who she is today. Our winning ways started with her, and she is likely the best pitcher to come from Bensalem to date.”
