The Central Bucks East girls’ team got the 2014-15 campaign off to a good start.
The Patriots won three events at the 42nd annual Central Bucks East Relays, the traditional kickoff to the season, which they hosted on Friday night.
They began the evening with a win in the first event, the200-yard freestyle relay. Erin Lengel, Lauren Griffith, Kirsten Mortimer and Hannah Wittman clocked in at 1:40.35, well below the District One Class AAA automatic time of 1:42.77.
Griffiths, Wittman, Lengel and Mortimer also won the 200medley relay in 1:53.18, also below the automatic district cut of 1:53.98.
The Patriots rounded out the evening with a victory in the final event, the 500 crescendo relay with a time of 4:40.17. Griffith led off with a 50 freestyle, followed by Lengel, who swam a 100 freestyle leg. Wittman swam the third and longest leg of 200 yards, followed by Mortimer, who swam a100 leg and anchored by Stephanie Chell, who finished off the race with a 50 leg.
“We definitely worked really hard for this meet and I think everyone swam awesomely,” said Griffith, a senior. “It’s good for us to swim well here because it keeps everyone motivated and pushes us to swim harder.
“We want to swim well here but this is also a fun meet. You get to swim fun events that you don’t do in regular meets and everyone’s cheering. There’s a lot of positive energy.
Hatboro-Horsham also cleaned up at the meet.
Mike Thomas, Andy Thomas, Nick Bannon and Jeremy Brosius won the 400 individual medley relay in 3:49.49, lowering the meet record of 3:53.67set by Hatboro-Horsham’s Bobby Lenahan, Mike Thomas, Duane Adler and Tim Janyszek in 2011.
Tim McPoyle, Tim Reilly, Mike Thomas, Andy Thomas and Sean Claggett won the 500 crescendo relay in another meet record time of 4:11.20.The Hatters also owned the previous standard in this event of 4:13.31, set in 2012 by Pat Stasio, Lenahan, Curtis Sumner, Kyle Finn and Tom Fisher.
For the Hatboro-Horsham girls, Barb Schmele, Katie Moore, Grace Reimenschneider and Perie Sumner won the 400 individual medley relay(4:17.45).
“I think we did a good job,” said Hatters senior Haley Sutton, who is headed for Towson next year. “It’s important to get the attitude right for the rest of the season and get everyone excited for the meets especially the freshmen because they don’t know what it’s like.
“It’s good to have a meet like this for the freshmen because there are no individual events so they’re getting their first swim meet in but they have other people behind them.
“There’s a nice mix of teams here and I like that. We see teams that we don’t swim in the dual meet season and I think that’s important for us.”
William Tennent posted a win. The boys foursome of Tom DelConte, Matt Patrick, Mark Preedy and Brennen Bastien won the 200 freestyle relay (1:32.15).
Kelly Magri and Sarah Stim of Central Bucks West teamed up to win diving, posting a combined score of 459.20 points.
Radnor won the boys 200 medley relay (1:41.79), 200 backstroke relay (1:48.00), 200 butterfly relay (1:42.58) and 200 breaststroke relay(2:05.31) and the girls 200 backstroke relay (1:57.22) and 200 breaststroke relay (2:16.20).
