WARWICK -- When Pennsbury's ice hockey team is good, it is very good.
On Friday night at The Rinks at Warwick, the Falcons were very, very good.
They played almost flawless defense in front of goalie Trevor Schadler and got a strong offensive showing to beat Central Bucks East 4-1.
Pennsbury kept the Patriots away from the net. The Falcons allowed only 21 shots on goal and didn't surrender a goal until there was only 1:19 remaining in the game.
Pennsbury coach Joe Deery has a system his team plays, and as long as the Falcons adhere to that system, they play well.
"When we're playing the coach's game, it all seems to go," Schadler said. "We just play good when we're playing his system."
What exactly is “the coach's game”?
"We play a 1-2-2," Schadler explained. "That means we have two defensemen in the back and extra support so we don't have that many odd-man rushes."
According to Deery, that's about right.
"When they play the system and forecheck like they did tonight and they back-check, we can beat anybody,” the Falcons’ coach said. “If they get away from the system, you don't know what's going to happen.
"The games that we've lost this year, we've taken too many penalties. We got behind quick and it was tough to get back."
East coach Sean Mullin lauded the Falcon defense, but he also thought his team had something to do with it.
"Their defense was strong," Mullin said, "but I don't think that we ever sent anyone in to the net to work hard. We didn't show up to play hockey.
"It was a lack of motivation, a lack of effort. That's the team that showed up for us.
"Not to discredit them. They took advantage of all their opportunities and we turned the puck over way too much."
A lot of the credit for the win goes to Schadler. The goalie stopped all but one of the shots taken by the Patriots.
"When our defense plays good in front of him, he plays great,” Deery said.
The offense was handled quite capably by Jack Kelly. Kelly scored two goals and added one assist.
But he got some help.
In the first period, it looked like there was a possibility of a rarity in high school ice hockey -- a double shutout. With less than five seconds to go in the stanza, that possibility ended when Pennsbury's Kevin Koerner fired a shot past East goalie Steve Gilchrist off an assist from Anthony Bench.
The score stayed that way through the second period. That just enhanced the chances that, if no goal had been scored in the first period, there might have been a shot at the double zeroes.
Any idea of that fantasy ended quickly in the third period. The Falcons got their second goal with only 1:21 gone in the stanza when Craig Meschel scored.
Pennsbury added two more goals, both from Kelly and one of those unassisted. Austin Chase finally ended the drought for the Patriots with 1:19 left in the game.
