LEWISBURG - Michael Jensen lit up the pool.
The Upper Dublin junior set a state record en route to his victory in the 200-yard freestyle in Friday’s first night of Class AAA competition at the PIAA swimming and diving championships, held at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.
Jensen’s time of 1:35.31 eclipsed the previous mark of 1:36.05 set in 2009 by Matthew Belecanech of St. Joe’s Prep.
“It was definitely a goal to get the state record,” he said. “I put up a solid time at junior nationals so I thought it was a possibility for me.
“I’ve got the 100 tomorrow and the 400 free relay so I’m looking forward to that. Our team is swimming really well.”
He was also on the fourth place 200 medley relay with Wyatt Amdor, Devon Polak and Alex Flynn (1:32.46).
Amdor was 17th in the 100 butterfly (51.51).
For the Upper Dublin girls, Jenna Johns was sixth in the 100 butterfly (56.19).
Hatboro-Horsham senior Michael Thomas also struck gold, winning the 200 individual medley (1:44.50).
“I think it sets me up nicely for the backstroke (on Saturday),” he said. “I’m feeling the sprints more than the 200 right now. My 50 (in the relay) was pretty fast so we’ll see how that goes.”
He was also on the ninth place 200 freestyle relay with Sam Claggett, Tim McPoyle and Andy Thomas (1:26.33).
Hatboro-Horsham’s girls 200 medley relay of Haley Sutton, Sam Schmitt, Grace Riemenschneider and Colleen Claggett took 17th (1:49.76).
Barbara Schmele was 20th in the 200 individual medley (2:09.73) for Hatboro-Horsham.
North Penn’s girls made a strong showing.
The Maidens won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:34.40. Kailyn Evans, Aimee Baur, Leah Brown and Olivia DiStefano were the swimmers.
“All the girls on the relay did an amazing job,” DiStefanosaid. “Leah, Kailyn and Aimee are fantastic sprinters. I couldn’t ask for a better team to be on.
“This was awesome and definitely gets us motivated for swimming tomorrow. We have a lot of girls swimming as individuals and in the relay. I’m really looking forward to seeing how we do in prelims.”
Marie Yacopino was second in girls diving with a score of 506.05 points. This is the second silver medal in three years for the junior, who was third last year.
“I’m glad the work I put in is showing,” she said.
North Penn’s 200 medley relay of Megan Zartman, Erin O’Neill, Anna Haggerty and Brown took sixth (1:46.61) and Evans was eighth in the 200 freestyle (1:56.25).
Also for the Maidens, DiStefano was ninth in the 50 freestyle (24.01), Zartman was 13th in the 200 individual medley (2:07.60), Aimee Baur was 18th in the 200 freestyle (1:55.72), Rachel Fisher was 18th in diving (272.70) and Madison Tanis finished 23rd in diving (159.00).
For the North Penn boys, Corey Smith, Thanas Kountroubis, Liam Kelly and Harrison Friel took third in the 200 medley relay (1:32.18).
Kountroubis was fifth in the 200 individual medley (1:50.96) and Kelly was fifth in the 50 freestyle (20.83) to round out the medals for the Knights.
Smith was 14th in the 200 individual medley (1:55.40), Mike Kern was 16th in the 200 freestyle (1:42.60), Kyle Supko was 16th in the 200 individual medley (1:56.51) and Brett Else was 18th in the 200 freestyle (1:43.47) for North Penn.
Pennridge made a splash on the first day of competition.
Anna Beno, Brittany Weiss, Morgan Scott and Hannah Zurmuhl took second in the 200 medley relay (1:43.99).
“It’s really nerve wracking but it’s awesome just being here,” said Beno, a freshman. “It was especially exciting to make it to the finals but I was really nervous. I honestly think I would have passed out if my teammates hadn’t been there to support me.
“I knew that the one girl in the race did a 25 so I thought if I saw her feet we were in great shape and I saw her so I figured we were doing all right.
“I’m really looking forward to the rest of the meet. Now that I’ve done it I think it’ll get easier.”
The Rams also earned silver in three individual events. Scott was second in the 200 freestyle (1:49.26), Zurmuhl was second in the 50 freestyle (23.23) and Weiss in the 100 butterfly (54.45).
Danny Knoll of Wissahickon was third in the boys 50 freestyle (20.70). He was also on the 200 freestyle relay with Doug Boehme, Jake Berring and Jeff Beyer which finished 17th (1:28.28). Boehme was 23rd in the 200 freestyle (1:45.13).
Hannah Wittman of Central Bucks East finished sixth in the girls 200 individual medley (2:04.77). She was also on the seventh place 200freestyle relay with Erin Lengel, Kirsten Mortimer and Lauren Griffith (1:37.93).
For the CB East boys, Andrew Zhugaryevich was seventh in the50 freestyle (21.02) and Collin Villari finished 21st in the boys 200 individual medley (1:57.22).
Pennsbury diver Nicole Costello was sixth (418.10).
For the boys, Connor Doyle finished 10th in the 200 individual medley (1:53.14).
The Falcons’s 200 medley relay of Doyle, Collin Hanlon, Daniel Lawton and Travis Venables was 14th (1:36.99).
Jake Goroshko of Council Rock North finished sixth in the boys 50 freestyle (20.95).
The CR North 200 medley relay of Goroshko, Jack Donnelly, Joseph Segel and Allen Shmurak finished 15th (1:37.20).
Rickilee Hodges was seventh in the girls 50 freestyle for Souderton (23.95).
She also swam on the 200 medley relay along with Ariana Crossgrove, Erin Hodges and Jennifer Rogers. They tied for 10th with Freedom (1:47.83).
For the Souderton boys, Cristian Musterait was 16th in the 50 freestyle (22.01).
Quakertown’s Taylor Bennett, a freshman, was ninth in girls diving (408.40).
William Tennent’s boys 200 freestyle relay of Brennen Bastian, Tom Del Conte, Matt Patrick and Mark Preedy was 13th (1:27.51).
For Central Bucks West, Sarah Stim was 11th in diving (398.35)and Kelly Margi was 15th (386.55).
Rounding out the competition for the Bucks, Henry Mackensen was 30th in the boys 100 butterfly (53.45).
David Kneiss, the lone representative of Neshaminy, finished in a tie for 19th with Bryson Hunter of Hempfield in the 50 freestyle. Both posted a time of 21.65, which is a school record for Neshaminy.
