Kara Wireman – Chestnut Hill College (Bowling)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: Chestnut Hill, Cheyney, Kutztown
Reasons for choosing Chestnut Hill: “When I met the coach – he’s just a really nice guy. We just visited Monday. It’s really nice.”
What was the progression that led you to continue bowling at the collegiate level? “One of the girls on our team last year – Jen Stevens – got a full ride to bowl in college. I knew there were (bowling) teams, but I honestly didn’t even know you could. That started me thinking about it.”
Coach Brian Laiacona: “She has been part of our program for three years, and she bowled varsity all three years. She was the anchor of this year’s team. When Jen – who was the anchor all four years - graduated last year, Kara came in and took over a leadership role and really rolled with it. She really was a mentor to our two sophomores this year and helped us get back into regionals, which we didn’t qualify for last year. A lot of people thought when we didn’t make it last year there was no way when Jen graduated we were going to make it. It’s definitely an accomplishment, and she definitely led the way.
“She came to me a couple of months ago, and said, ‘I want to go to college and bowl.’ I said, ‘We’ll do exactly what we did with Jen.’ Chestnut Hill’s program starts up next year, and I said, ‘Why don’t you look at Chestnut Hill. You have nothing to lose. They’re a local school, they’re starting up, so they need warm bodies.’ She’s not just a warm body, she’s going to be extremely competitive for them and be an anchor for their program for the next four years. They’re definitely going to hit the ground running. That’s what’s nice about bowling. You need five solid girls, and you’ll compete immediately. I think their coach is going to do a nice job, and they’re going to be competitive in the region.”
