Alyssa Hughes – Keystone College (Softball)
Major: Sports Management
Final list of colleges: Keystone, Millersville, Messiah, Stevenson, York
Reasons for choosing Keystone: “At first, I think the reason why I chose Keystone was because it’s a smaller school, so I’ll have more opportunities. It’s actually smaller than Pennridge. Also, their sports management program – it’s one of the top-rated. Obviously, because of softball too – their coach is absolutely amazing. She’s been recruiting me since sophomore year, and not that I would go to a school because of the coach, but that was definitely a big part of it. The team was awesome, and it’s just in a very nice area too. I’m just really excited for the opportunity to go out there.”
What was the progression that led you to playing softball at the collegiate level? “When I was around eight years old, I would watch the NCAAs on TV. I always used to tell my dad, ‘I want to play college softball. I want to be one of those girls.’ As a freshman in high school, I played on an 18U gold team, so I’ve been playing on gold teams for four years. I saw all the girls getting recruited by colleges, and it pushed me to become a better player. I just really wanted to pursue that and play in college.”
Coach Paul Koehler says: “Alyssa Hughes is probably the sweetest kid I’ve ever coached in the game of softball. She loves the game, and she has a real strong work ethic. The other thing about her is she’s always smiling. For us, she was one of our pitchers and played some outfield. She is one of those team leaders who has not been given the title of captain, but by everything she does, the way she behaves and the way she carries herself, she shows leadership amongst her peers on the team. I think Keystone College is a perfect fit for her, and I think it will be a great opportunity for her.”
