Maddie Decker – University of Maine (Softball)
Major: Marine Biology
Final list of colleges: Maine, University of Massachusetts at Lowell
Reasons for choosing Maine: “As soon as I stepped on campus, I fell in love with it. I knew they were incredibly strong in my major, and the coach is an absolute sweetheart.”
What was the progression that led you to playing softball at the collegiate level? “It was always my dream to play college softball. It was never really of matter of ‘ I have to play D-1.’ I didn’t care, but when I saw the University of Maine was interested, it struck me as ‘Wow, I can play D-1. I can do this.’ I never thought I would be going north, but as soon as I stepped on campus, I just loved it.”
Coach Dan Hayes says: “Maddie is a versatile player who can play anywhere on the field. She played as a guest player for my 18U travel team when she was in seventh grade and played the outfield and just made some amazing plays. People couldn’t believe she was so young. At South, she played short and pitched, and she could have played third or first. She could catch also. There’s really nothing she couldn’t do on the softball field.
“Her attitude was just incredible (after she tore her ACL). She might have missed one practice to see the orthopedic (doctor) after it happened, but I don’t think she missed one practice after that. She was there encouraging the kids on and doing whatever she could to help out the team. She’s just unreal.”
