Krista Campbell – Bentley University (Volleyball)
Major: Marketing
Final list of colleges: Bentley, Stevenson, Babso
Reasons for choosing Bentley: “The first time I was at Bentley – I just had my moment where you feel at home, you feel this is place you want to be for the next four years. It all worked out perfectly.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in volleyball at the collegiate level? “I started playing volleyball when I was in sixth grade because my sister played, and I thought it was the coolest sport, and I got into it. I’ve just loved it ever since. I think it was my sophomore year when I first e-mailed the Bentley coach.”
Coach Kinsey Lynch: “Krista is a setter at Bentley University, and she’s going through preseason training. Unfortunately, the coach (Sandy Hoffman) who has been there and helped recruit Krista in her junior year just passed away yesterday, so it’s been quite an emotional beginning of the season for them. In my second year of coaching, Kelly Mee, one of my former players, was also recruited by Bentley, so I started my varsity coaching career with a setter going to Bentley, and I ended my coaching career with a setter going to Bentley.
“Krista was our MVP last year. She had amassed over 1,500 assists over her career, and she was just an all-star in every sense of the word. She was a leader on and off the court. That’s what I miss most about leaving coaching – just the relationships you build with these kids starting at such a young age.
“As a freshman, Krista was on varsity, but she didn’t set all the time. Come her sophomore year, she was our setter. What made Krista so instrumental in leading our team to a lot of successes was the fact that she was the type of kid I didn’t have to say, ‘You really have to work harder off the court.’
“In terms of the mental game, she just had this innate ability on the court – she always was thinking ahead, and she was always thinking about her options. She was a great leader in the sense that when we needed her to be extremely verbal and we needed her to be a more physical presence as a leader, she was always capable. She was a joy to coach. I could tell her anything, and she would be, ‘Okay, coach, I got it.’
“She earned first team all-conference and District One. She worked very hard last season in all aspects of the game to be a leader and the best setter she could be for our team. Krista is the quintessential teammate, and it was an honor to coach. Her work ethic is infectious, and her passion for volleyball is apparent to anyone who watches her play. She is without a doubt one of the best players to have ever played at Council Rock North.
