Sara Keeny – Kutztown University (Softball)

Major:  Education

Reasons for choosing Kutztown:  “Great softball program, great education program and beautiful campus.”

What was the progression that led you to playing softball at the collegiate level?  “I started thinking about playing in college in ninth grade. The recruiting started with me taping myself playing and sending videos and schedules to different coaches.”

Coach Biz Keeny says:  “I think Sara has one of the two gifts I think college coaches are looking for – she’s fast. To me, you’re one of three things: you’re fast, you hit the ball far or you throw the ball hard as a pitcher. Sara fell into the fast category.
“She was very stable, and she was an outstanding fielder – very well trained, and I give a lot of that credit to (Sports Connection coaches) Bill Stocks and Bob Notarfrancesco. She was in a very good travel program, which helped her, and she was just a confident kid at the top of the lineup and up the middle (defensively). When you build a team – if you’re good up the middle, you’re usually pretty good. I think those were two areas of strength Sara had.
“She’s really a terrific bunter - she ran well, she bunted the ball well, and she could slap it if she had to. As an offensive player, she kept herself out of long periods of struggles at the plate because of the fact that if she hit a ball in the hole, there was a reasonably good chance she would beat it out. At the end of her senior year and especially through the summer, she really found a power stroke. She’s become a complete player. Sara was one of those difference makers, and you don’t get those kids very often.
“Kutztown has been very, very successful in softball. In all sports, the PSAC is probably one of the best Division 2 leagues in the country. Sara went to camps there, and she always liked the school. I think it will be a good fit for her both academically and athletically.”
