Want to play college sports? Odds are stacked against you
By Gary Silvers
Want to play college sports?
Good luck!
Your chances are better of earning straight A’s.
College recruiting is a numbers game. There are far more qualified high school student-athletes than there are college roster spots, let alone athletic scholarships. The odds are stacked against you.
Here’s what you’re facing:
7,500,000: High school student-athletes in the U.S.
1,875,000: High school senior athletes.
460,000: NCAA student-athletes.
112,500: NCAA freshman roster spots.
6.0: Percent of high school athletes who will play in college.
2.2: Percent of high school girls who will play NCAA Division I sports and Division III sports.
2.1: Percent of high school boys who will play Division III sports.
2.0: Percent of high school athletes who will receive athletic scholarships.
1.8: Percent of high school boys who will play Division I sports.
1.3: Percent of high school boys who will play Division II sports.
1.2: Percent of high school girls who will play Division II sports.
1.0: Percent of high school athletes who will receive “full rides.”
0.5: Percent of high school athletes who will compete in the Power 5 conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12 and SEC).
0.1: Percent of high school athletes who will become professional athletes.
