Evan Vare – Lafayette College (Soccer)

Major:  Possibly Civil Engineering

Final list of colleges:  Lafayette, JMU, Penn State, Old Dominion, William & Mary, Lehigh, Northwestern

Reasons for choosing Lafayette:  “I had other options, but Lafayette was really, really interested in me. I was at the end of my recruiting process, and I just wanted to make my decision because I was stressed out. I visited Lafayette’s campus, and I absolutely loved it. The soccer team is real close, and that’s what I wanted in the team I would be joining. I just fell in love when I visited it.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in soccer at the collegiate level?  “In my eighth grade year, I left a very high level club team and I went to Copa. It wasn’t at the level I wanted to be at, so I left that team. Once I left that team and knew I could play at the highest level, I started to fall in love with the game more. It really motivated me to get better and become the best I can. That’s when I realized I could go real far with this.”

At the end of an undefeated season that was capped with a state title, you’ve been on the receiving end of a long list of awards. What do they mean to you?  “Obviously, it’s great to obtain these awards, and this might sound cliché, but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates. They’re the reason why I’m getting all these accolades. Without them, it wouldn’t be possible. Without coach, it wouldn’t be possible. All the glory is to them. They helped me get here, and they’re a huge part of it.”

Coach Mike Gorni says:  “At this point, his accomplishments speak for themselves. He was named the PA Gatorade Player of the Year in addition to the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association Player of the Year. He had a great January in terms of celebrations. He was honored at the NSCAA All-American banquet in Baltimore in the middle of January as national All-American. At the state banquet, he was presented with state player of the year, but probably the most important one to him is that he did all of this with a state championship team that went 26-0-0. There just isn’t much you can add. Individually, he’s the leading scorer, and his goal production was kind of crazy, especially handling all of the pressure he had to handle along with the team. Coming from a junior year where the team was 21-3, which is fabulous in itself, and to follow that up with the pressure on the team and the pressure on him personally was a tribute to both the team and to Evan with how they handled it.”
