Quinn Guzman – Embry-Riddle University (Golf)
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Final list of colleges: Embry-Riddle, West Chester, Seton Hall, Nebraska, Cal-State Fullerton, UConn, Purdue, IUPUI
Reasons for choosing Embry-Riddle: “I chose Embry-Riddle because they actually had the highest team GPA of any NCAA golf team, and they have a great engineering program.”
Favorite memory: “Our back-to-back conference championships. I also enjoyed my run to states because that was over a five-week span, and I was able to prove to myself what I can do.”
Coach Fred Cicacci says: “It’s very easy for me to say that he’s been in the top five (golfers) we’ve ever had but more likely in the top three we’ve ever had. He’s quite a player. He does a lot of practicing. He tries new clubs, tries new methods and has been coached by some pretty prominent people outside of school. He’s been all over the place to tournaments and put in the time.
“That first day of states he was with some pretty stiff competition, and he was second after the first day, which put him into some stiffer competition. He played with the state champ and didn’t have a great day. When he’s having a bad day, you might see it a bit after a shot, but after that, he was unemotional and kept his nose to the grindstone. He’s very, very even keel. A bad shot – it’s a part of golf. He didn’t have too many bad shots. He was pretty accomplished, but he spent a lot of time - he loved to practice. He’s a hard worker in school. He should be successful. I really think we’ll be reading about him for a while.”
