Jen Hammons – Ursinus College (Softball)

Major:  Education

Reasons for choosing Ursinus College:  “Family feel, students, coaches”

What was the progression that led you to playing softball at the collegiate level?  “I have always loved watching college softball on TV and dreamed of doing it one day. I started thinking about playing in college in middle school. The recruiting started my sophomore year with emailing coaches.”

Coach Curt Cyliax says:  “She was instrumental in the year that we had this year. At Springfield, when you have nine players on the field – if you have three playing travel, you’re doing good. This was the best I’ve seen her pitch in the three years I’ve been there. She took the ball every time, and without her in the circle, we would have been 1-13 instead of 8-6 in the Suburban One. She was just lights out. What she did in the circle was phenomenal. She also can hit the ball. She’s a very calm batter. She gets up there with a confidence that I think helped our younger players – we had three freshmen starting and a couple of juniors, and she provided a settling comfort.
“There were some games we should have won but didn’t because of errors in the field. In the circle, she was giving them three outs and the fielders were giving them four or five outs. She can’t control that. There were only one or two games where she wasn’t her best, but she muscled through, which she had to do. We only had two pitchers – one for the varsity and one for the jayvee, and Jen took the ball in the circle every time. Without her, we would have had a very difficult season.
“I think Ursinus will be a really good fit. I think it will be really good for her as a person because now she’s going to be playing with eight other players who are as good as she is. I think it’s going to push her to even greater heights. She’s a good kid.”
