TELFORD -- Two sophomores and a senior scorched the course at Indian Valley Country Club during the Pennridge Invitational golf tournament which kicks off the Continental Conference golf schedule.

One of the sophomores, Central Bucks East's Patrick Sheehan, toured the par-36 front nine in even par. The other soph, CB West's Luca Jezzeny, and the senior, Souderton's Dawson Anders, were one stroke behind at 37.

"My driver was really the key," Sheehan said. "I hit it long and I was just hitting fairways and greens."

Sheehan's total might have been even better if he hadn't bogeyed the ninth hole, his eighth hole of the day, or if he hadn't bogeyed the sixth.

"I bogeyed nine," he said, "three-putted. I bogeyed the par-3 sixth which kind of hurt.

"(I had) two birdies and two bogeys. I birdied the par-3 third and the par-4 seventh."

Sheehan also led the Patriots to the team title. CB East turned in a score of 198, four shots better than its closest competitor, Souderton at 202. Central Bucks was third in the seven-team field with a 203 while Central Bucks South was fourth with a 205.

"I'm very impressed with our top five players," said East coach Matt Wolf. "They came through really well, especially Brian McCartan with a 39.

"He's shown dramatic improvement. Last year he was a jayvee player.

"And we're excited to see what Patrick (Sheehan) can do as a sophomore. This is a great start with a 36 but, top to bottom, (it was) a really good performance by the whole team."

Jezzeny, who reached the Eastern Regionals last year as a freshman, played in the same foursome as Anders and had some troubles on the green but got it together when it counted.

"I was swinging well, hitting some good shots, hitting a lot of greens," he said. "I just couldn't make many putts until the last hole. I birdied the last."

Anders got off to a rough start, bogeying the first two holes. But he rebounded well, eagling the par-5 third hole.

But he dropped a shot on the par-4 seventh hole. And he couldn't make it up.

"I only hit four greens and my start was bad but I got an eagle on the third hole," Anders said. "No more birdies and one or two good pars.

"I wasn't striking the ball great. I got some putts to go in but I couldn't score."

Anders has had an excellent summer. He won the Montgomery County Junior Amateur and the Montgomery County Amateur and reached the match-play portion of the Golf Association of Philadelphia at Merion.

"That was a good weekend," he said of the amateur championships. "I'd like to have more weekends like that."

Two players turned in scorecards with 38s. They were North Penn's Ron Robinson and Ryan Bormann of William Tennent.

"It was a good start to the season," said Sheehan, a sentiment that was also echoed by Anders and Jezzeny. "This course isn't the easiest of courses."

His 36 might give pause to that statement. However, he has a history at Indian Valley.

When reminded that he will see it again for the Suburban One League championships, he said that his game will be "hopefully better than last time. (I shot) 80 in the SOLs (last year)."

Anders and Jezzeny echoed Sheehan's assessment of the tournament and also agreed that it was beneficial for the rest of the season.

"We see all the teams and how they are playing," said Anders. "We got to see our competition and how they play."

"We got to look at all the different teams and how they play and how we stack up against them so we are feeling pretty good," Jezzeny said. "I'm feeling pretty confident with my game and I think I can shoot some more good scores."

But it was Wolf who expressed what every member of his CB East team was thinking.

"I remember last year we had a little bit of trouble here at Indian Valley in the match and it was a little tough to rebound from," he said. "Hopefully this will help us in the beginning of the season, kind of give us a little bit of momentum going into the first week."
