IVYLAND -- Central Bucks East put together another tournament-winning performance Wednesday at Spring Mill Country Club.

The Patriots captured the Spring Mill Tournament sponsored by Council Rock South with a team score of 208. They beat Rock South (215), Hatboro-Horsham (216) and William Tennent (221).

And the Patriots also picked up another individual victory as Hayden Rousselle toured the par-36 course in even par to take medalist honors. The Golden Hawks' Lukas Clark was the only other golfer under 40, shooting a 39.

"Ball striking is definitely key on the course," Rousselle said. "The greens aren't tough to hit but they are tough to hold. (They are) a little slow but the pin placements are definitely challenging."

Obviously, Rousselle's ball striking was on the money.

"Mainly, my ball striking was good today, hitting the greens," he said. "I only missed one green today so that helped.

"I had two or three lag putts that I needed to stick close and they got close so that helps. Making sure you can save par is the big thing. Birdies will drop but you've got to make pars."

Joining Rousselle on the winning team were Brian McCartan (42), Patrick Sheehan (43), Matt Becker (43) and Brandon Cassidy (44).

"It's definitely important that not just one person plays well on your team," said Rousselle. "You need other people to play well. It's important that you have other people who can shoot 30s on your team."

The win at Spring Mills is the second in three days for the Patriots, who won the Pennridge Invitational at Indian Valley Country Club on Monday as Sheehan shot an even-par 36.

Just how beneficial are these tournaments in preparation for the regular Suburban One League season?

All four coaches agreed that they are very helpful. The Spring Mills tournament is the third in three days for William Tennent and the second in three days for CB East.

Winning coach Matt Wolf of CB East is a proponent of the tournaments.

"(Tournaments are) very beneficial," the Patriots’ coach said. "The players have a chance to get an SOL score.

"We're also playing on a nice course with high level competition. In a non-league format, it gives them the chance to work on some things that they need to work on before they apply that to the league."

Hatboro-Horsham coach Mike Harmon, who has a very young team, is a booster as well.

"They're super beneficial," he said, "just for their opportunity to get another nine under their belt in tournament-play situations.

"I always like them early in the season to gain confidence because they struggle sometimes translating the practice rounds to the tournament rounds. It gives them a good chance to do that."

Fred DiChiara, the William Tennent coach, has seen more tournaments than anyone so far this season and appreciates what the tournaments give his team.

"I think it's beneficial because it gives the kids more experience on more courses," he said. "It gives them experience on a course that's a lot tighter than 5 Ponds (Tennent's home course) and it gives them a chance for a score for SOLs."

Council Rock South coach Dennis Matika, who has been holding this tournament for 14 years, must like tournaments because the Hawks are in another one Thursday in southern New Jersey.

"What is nice is you get an opportunity before school starts, studies and all that, to compete," Matika said. "I think it's beneficial and it's kind of the end of the summer-type thing so it's an opportunity to be relaxed and play a little bit and a chance to see what the kids can do. I'm glad they are able to do it."
