PENNSBURY 2, FATHER JUDGE 1
A young Falcon squad rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat perennial PCL power Father Judge, and it was a freshman off the bench – Nyles Cayemitte – delivering the game winner just over a minute into overtime to propel the Falcons to the stunning upset.
“We’re an extremely young team, so to be able to pull this off definitely opened up all the kids’ eyes of what maybe we can be capable of doing,” coach Tom Stoddart said. “And just mathematically, when you beat a team like Father Judge, who was undefeated (last year) and has everyone back and was looking to put up a record like that again, it’s going to go a long way to ensure we secure ourselves a spot in the 24-team (district) tournament at the end of the season.”
Judge took a 1-0 lead nine minutes into the contest and still held that one-goal advantage late in the second half.
“We were dangerous a little bit in the first half, but they had by far the better chances,” Stoddart said. “We got into the second half, and they again were all over us.
“They forced a penalty kick midway through the second half, but they ended up hitting the crossbar and missed it. We just kept picking our spots to be dangerous, and we had a couple of runs forward that almost worked for us.”
With less than five minutes remaining in regulation, the Falcons got the break they needed when they were awarded a penalty stroke.
“Matiss Mednis was trying to take a shot, and he got pulled down from behind,” Stoddart said. “Zach LoBasso finished it for us.”
LoBasso’s penalty kick knotting the score set the stage for overtime, and Cayemitte took care of business in OT.
“I started two freshmen today, and I brought a third one off the bench,” Stoddart said. “Less than two minutes in, he got the ball and made a move toward the middle and just buried a shot from about 40 yards out – just a beauty of a shot.”
The Falcons’ coach lauded the performance of several players in the win.
“Nate Slotnick came up huge for us in goal in his first varsity start since his freshman year,” said Stoddart of his keeper, who had one game of varsity experience as a freshman on his resume. “He stood on his head. He made a couple of huge saves, especially in the second half to keep us in the game.
“Dan Rottenborn held down the middle for us, kept the communication and kept everything positive under a lot of pressure. Matiss Mednis played in the back and then really came forward to give us that surge to get us over the hump to get us that goal. Zach LoBasso was really dangerous as normal – he’s always a threat to score.”
