The Panthers are finding life in the American Conference to be very much to their liking. Twenty-four hours after edging last year’s second place team, Wissahickon, 2-1, the Panthers were back at it again, edging the defending champion Flying Cardinals and serving notice that they will be a force in the conference.
“This is huge for us,” coach Mike Koch said. “We’ve always played hard and played well, but we would have night after night of being overmatched. Even in our best years, we could win a game here or there, but we couldn’t compete night after night after night.
“Here we’re playing teams with similar depth, and it makes a difference. We have a shot now. I have a lot of seniors, and they’re smart and they’re organized. We getting wins in games that could have gone either way both nights, no doubt about it.”
The Panthers scored the game’s lone goal seven minutes into the contest when Becah Fox capped a passing sequence from teammates Vic Sturgess to Haley Pursel with a goal that turned out to be the game winner.
“It was two brilliant passes and a great finish,” Koch said. “Vic played a brilliant ball to Haley who put just a really one-time ball across for Becah.
“We definitely got some energy from that. We held on again in the second half, kind of like yesterday. We got tired. Both teams had back-to-back games, so it was a difficult run for both of us.
“Upper Dublin is a very good team, and John Topper is a good coach. I’m sure they’ll be ready when we play again.”
The Panthers’ coach lauded the play of freshman center back Melina Jagiello in the win.
“She was just fantastic,” Koch said. “Haley Dulis, another defender, played well.
“Becah Fox deserved the goal. I don’t know if she’s ever scored in a high school game before. She’s been a defender for the last two years, and we moved her to midfield. It took a little bit of convincing, but I think she’s really bought into that role and got a game-winning goal tonight.”
Quakertown (2-0 SOL) will be on the road at Hatboro-Horsham on Tuesday, and Upper Dublin (1-1) will travel to Wissahickon for a key conference showdown Tuesday.
