SOL Girls' Volleyball District Wrap (10-27-16)

PW, CR North and Hatboro-Horsham were all winners in Thursday’s second round of the District One 4A volleyball tournament.

#2 PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 3, #15 STRATH HAVEN 0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-19)
Showing no ill effects from its opening round bye, the Colonials earned a hard-fought sweep in Thursday’s second round.
“They were an incredibly strong team, led by their outside hitters and strong serving game,” PW coach Seely Byler said.
Danielle Rippert had another big night for the Colonials, finishing with 10 kills and 28 digs. Lily Acquaviva had a team high 11 kills while Corrine Kalala had eight kills. Libero Olivia Carbo contributed 23 digs, 10 assists and four aces, and setter Bridget McTamney had 15 assists and 15 digs.
Plymouth Whitemarsh will host a familiar opponent in Tuesday’s quarterfinal round when the Colonials take on 10th-seeded Upper Merion.

#6 COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 3, #11 UPPER DUBLIN 0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-10)
The Indians had a battle on their hands in Thursday’s second round, eking out a 26-24 win in the opening set and going on to win the next two.
“(We) played fantastic team volleyball, spreading around the attacks to six players all contributing to the success of the match,” coach Mike Adams said. “We fought back from a big deficit in the first set to win and take control of the match for the remaining two sets.
“Senior outside hitters Morgan Collito and Birdie Ligos led the charge with nine kills each followed by opposite hitter Dana (Bandurick) who had seven kills and our two middles – Mackenzie Tinner and Hadley Grundman with six and five kills each. Junior setter Sarah Caola effectively ran the offense with 21assists and four aces.  It was great team volleyball against a very good Upper Dublin team.”
Ligos (12 digs, one ace) and Collito (11 digs, one block) also contributed defensively. Caola also had six digs and four service aces, and Maddy Moore had nine digs and two aces.
Council Rock North will travel to third-seeded Garnet Valley for a quarterfinal match on Tuesday.

#8 HATBORO-HORSHAM 3, #9 GREAT VALLEY 0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-18)
Hatboro-Horsham put together a strong team effort with a sweep win over Great Valley on Thursday night, allowing them to move to the third round of district playoffs.
Junior outside hitter Katerina Yankanich had a huge night at the net with 15 kills on just 25 attempts (.520 hitting %) while posting a solid eight digs as well. Senior outside hitter Holly Owen had a great night as well with 15 kills on 34 attempts (.382 hitting %), four aces, one block and six digs.
Although the numbers don't show it, senior libero Allison Laucella had an outstanding night defensively with 18 digs and an ace. Sophomore setter Rachel Dittus had a breakout match with 31 assists, and six digs. Junior DS Maddie Kallmeyer also added three digs and two aces on the night.
Hatboro-Horsham will travel to top-seeded Bishop Shanahan for Tuesday’ quarterfinal match.
