Plymouth Whitemarsh saw its remarkable season come to a close in Saturday’s PIAA Class 4A quarterfinals.
#11-1 PARKLAND 3, #1-2 PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 1 (25-18, 25-20, 19-25, 25-17)
A stellar season came to an end for Plymouth Whitemarsh on Saturday when the Colonials fell to defending state champion Parkland. Each time the Colonials stepped onto the court in recent weeks, they were making history with a list of accomplishments that included a perfect SOL Continental Conference season en route to an 18-0 record and the conference crown.
The Colonials – who returned all seven starters this season - advanced to the District One 4A title game where they suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of Bishop Shanahan, but they rebounded to defeat perennial power Hempfield in the opening round of the state tournament before falling to District 11 champion Parkland in four sets in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
“We played incredibly consistent this year in the regular season, which put us in a good position going into the playoffs,” coach Seely Byler said. “We faced very strong teams deep into districts – Strath Haven, Upper Merion, Council Rock North and Bishop Shanahan.
“I think their experience level allowed them to play very well against these District One opponents. In states they defeated Hempfield and played with such heart and determination against an incredibly talented Parkland team.”
Lily Acquaviva led the Colonials at the net with 13 kills to go along with eight digs and one block. Danielle Rippert also had a big game, finishing with six kills and 13 digs. Senior libero Olivia Carbo had a monster game defensively, delivering 27 digs to go along with nine assists. Emilee Waltz had 10 digs and four kills while Samantha Ward added eight digs, and Bridget McTamney had seven digs and a team-high three aces. Lauren Coscia added four kills, four assists, two blocks and one dig. Corrine Kalala had three kills.
Plymouth Whitemarsh closed out a remarkable season with a 26-2 record.
