WARWICK -- Special teams are a big part of any ice hockey team. They are important both offensively on the power play and defensively on the penalty kill.

But sometimes the penalty kill can be offensive. Dylan Feoli and Council Rock South proved that Friday night at Revolution Ice Arena.

Feoli scored two short-handed goals in the first period to spark the Golden Hawks to a 5-1 victory over previously undefeated Central Bucks South. He also added an assist on a second-period goal.

"I think the two first goals we scored were the big ones," said Rock South coach Joe Houk. "The two short-handed goals were the ones that were killers."

Feoli proved to be the player in the right place at the right time. He plays up front on the penalty kill with Matthew Owens, and the pair combined for two opportunity goals.

"They (CB South) were trying to pass the puck up top, and me and Owens were playing them high," Feoli said. "They passed it right to me for a breakaway.

"On the other one, Owens made a nice pass to slide it in front and it just snuck through the goalie."

Feoli credits the advice of Houk for his goals.

"He just said before the game to make sure we get the puck deep because this is a skilled team," Feoli said. "He said to get the puck deep and pressure their ‘D’ and it worked because they turned it over a lot to us.

"Before every game he says to go out there and make sure to be physical and some teams can't handle getting hit each time you touch the puck. Tonight, CB South couldn't handle the hits."

Titans’ coach Shawn McGinty wasn't happy with the way his special teams played.

"We let up two short-handed goals and that doesn't help," he said. "Letting up two short-handed goals kills you.

"Guaranteed that 95 (Feoli) is a really good player and he deserves the goals he got but we can't give it up. We were outworked and you can't be outworked when you are on the power play.

"If you are not capitalizing on the chances you are getting on special teams, you are not going to beat a team like CR South. We were giving the puck away.

"They were pressuring us and I knew they were going to do that on the penalty kill. We worked on it in practice, but obviously we didn't work on it (enough)."

About one-third of the way through the first period, Feoli struck with a teammate in the penalty box. At the 5:50 mark, he accepted the pass from Owens and deposited the puck behind Titan goalie Tim White.

Slightly less than 10 minutes later, Feoli ducked between two CB South players and stole the puck, going in solo against White. He scored his second goal at 15:00 of the first.

The Golden Hawks increased their lead to 3-0 early in the second period. Trey Elmer scored unassisted with only 1:46 gone in the period.

CB South cut into the lead at 4:04 on the power play. Joe Delaurentis, with assists from Colin Abbonizio and Frank Carter, scored the lone Titan goal.

Rock South got that back later. Matthew Meli notched the fourth goal of the game off an assist from Feoli.

The final tally of the game came in the third period. CB South pulled its goalie in favor of a sixth skater, and Logan Hurwitz fired the puck the length of the ice for the empty-net goal for the Hawks.

Despite the offensive output of his team, Houk also wanted to give some credit to his defense.

"I think our forecheck was a lot better than they expected," he said. "Even on special teams, they couldn't get out of their zone.

"I think Mason (Procz, the Rock South goalie) played a good game. I think he got challenged a little bit. We kept everything to the outside and he was seeing everything."

The victory keeps Rock South undefeated and at the top of the National Conference at 6-0. CB South falls to 3-1.

Luke Slater had a six-point night for the Rams, contributing five goals and one assist.

Michael Walker accounted for two of those goals while Slater collected his fourth goal of the game.
A Slater goal 3:21 into the final period knotted the score, but 23 seconds later, Avellino scored to put the Tigers back on top. But not for long. Zach Snyder’s goal less than a minute later knotted the score 8-8. Roarty’s unassisted goal with less than seven minutes remaining ignited a 3-0 Truman run to close out the game that included a goal by Bennett and Roarty’s fourth goal of the night.
The Tigers held a 42-30 advantage in shots. Kyle Huth earned the win in goal, turning away 34 shots.
